Brothers and sisters, ladies and gentlemen: Bapak will continue with his explanation concerning the latihan kejiwaan of Subud in connection with the enterprises and the bank, which should actually be a Subud world bank and to which Bapak has given the name "Sinar Kencana Mulia".
Brothers and sisters, the existence of the latihan kejiwaan of Subud combined with the future existence of enterprises and of the bank, can of course be said to be something new and strange. As a rule the people who plunge into the spiritual life no longer concern themselves with such worldly requirements as enterprises and banks, and so this is something alarming for the Subud members who cling to their old ways and act as people used to do in the old days, because of course that was the old way of doing things. These two are also kept separate in Indonesia itself. For instance, the younger people who have still to make their way in life in this world are restricted to a spiritual teaching designed for young people, the junior teaching, while the full teaching, the spiritual knowledge of the older people, which is directed towards self perfection for the life after death, is called the senior teaching, the teaching of the elders. This is only for older people of forty or fifty years old. This has indeed become traditional and customary so that the young receive young and the old receive old.
But Subud is not like that. Why is this? It is because Subud has come into the world and can actually be received by human beings - of whom Bapak was the first to receive it - in circumstances that are a hundred percent worldly. That is why the younger Subud members are in no way restricted, and there is nothing to prevent them from going on to University level in what they learn.
Only of course this is not allowed for the young people who are under the age of eighteen, for under the age of eighteen they are still not so much very young but very much children. As a rule, brothers and sisters, if children are given explanations about this, they tend to forget about other things, so that if they were allowed to do the latihan while still under the age of eighteen and were able to receive well, they would not want to continue studying any longer. That is why Bapak, or the spiritual brotherhood of Subud, places a restriction upon the opening of children or young people below the age of eighteen. If they are going to study, it is better for them to wait to be opened until they have entered the university.
That is how it is, brothers and sisters, and therefore the nature of the latihan kejiwaan of Subud is surprising to the older Subud members and so is the fact that there are to be enterprises and a bank. Many of them even say that it will drag Subud down. They ask why they should be told to get back into the world.
Yes, brothers and sisters, it is of course in accordance with what we receive in the latihan kejiwaan of Subud, that God really does will that all of us, all the members in worshipping God should be in a sound condition if they can. They should be sound both inwardly and outwardly, sound in body and also sound in soul or jiwa. This is what we have received in the latihan kejiwaan of Subud.
Brothers and sisters, what happens in the latihan kejiwaan, and also what you receive, confirms and proves that guidance and direction from the One Almighty God - which are in fact your worship of God - are something that you receive under ordinary, normal conditions; normal in the sense that this is the way one normally behaves in this world. Thus there is hardly any difference between this and when you are working at something. On the contrary, by receiving in the testing, by the method of testing, you can confirm all the more surely that the One Almighty God permits us to worship Him, and that He also guides our worship, under ordinary conditions, really ordinary everyday conditions. Indeed this is the hakekat, the inner reality of worshipping the One Almighty God. For God is close to human beings, and the power of God envelops human beings; not just from time to time, so that special occasions are required for this, but all the time. In short, your worship of God is present in your every movement, your every action. This clearly shows that the love of God for human beings is limitless, and it is always there. To repay this love, we of the spiritual brotherhood of Subud, who have received this confirmation, must therefore never give up worshipping the One Almighty God in everything we do, in every action and in all our work.
You have proof and verification for this also, as for instance, when Bapak tests what you are like if you are boxing or if you are playing golf. Yes, it looks as if it were quite ordinary, but in fact it is really the worship of human beings for God. The nearness of God to man is also something normal and ordinary, for if God were not near to man, man would not be alive. Also, if they do not constantly worship God, human beings will always be turning aside to the worship of material things.
Clearly then, we are not meant to be like that, brothers and sisters, Because we are always in touch with material forces in our lives, it is now very necessary for us to behave in such a way that we are no longer also influenced by them. Little by little we begin to use them as our instruments, and thus the material forces are now beginning to be our tools.
Is it possible to do this? Why not? For it is not we who are making the material forces into our instruments; we are willed by God to do this. Thus we can use material forces as our instruments because the power of God gives us strength. And in order to obtain strength from God at all times, which means that it is always present in us, we now need to act in ways that will not cut us off from the guidance and direction of the One Almighty God. This is the kind of action that Bapak proposes to you; that whoever of you can do so should, insofar as possible, run enterprises. You should run some sort of undertaking or business which originates from your inner self.
God is also All-just and All-wise. Suppose you do something unsuited to your natural talents, yet by the guidance and direction of the One Almighty God, what is unsuitable can be changed, so that our worship of the One Almighty God is not shut off by material things. Bapak takes someone who is working in an office as an example; someone who is writing letters is not cut off from the worship of the One Almighty God. Thus when you are writing in an office, you write in the ordinary way. But nevertheless you feel very much as if your actions are - yes, not so much as if they are being directed but as if there was something moving you, something like that.
This does not extend only this far, meaning only as far as the head. If you are really being purified all the time and are always obedient to the One Almighty God, not only your head, but your hearts and minds as well will be guided, so that in this way you can be united into one whole.
This is what is really necessary for human beings so long as they live in this world, as the messengers of God have said. Yes, the messengers of God in the old days, in former times, were able to receive, so that they could prove for themselves that they could worship as they walked, they could worship as they ate, they could worship as they slept. Yes, like the Christians say grace before they eat, but you should not just observe the outward form, which means just be concerned with appearances, but really do it sincerely. We should not believe puppets, laughing "heh, heh, heh" but not laughing from oneself. You must not be like that, brothers and sisters, but so that when you laugh "ho, ho, ho" you are all in one piece, and when you cease to exist here, you will go back to that place, which means you will go back to the One Almighty God who created you.
That is how it is, brothers and sisters, and so it is clear that when we follow the latihan kejiwaan, we are filled by the power of God in everything we do, and we are enveloped by the power of God, so that we are in the midst of it; to the right and to the left, above us and below, inside and outside, there is the power of God, so that we are like something that can change when it changes us and moves us.
But nevertheless God is not unjust, nor is He lacking in His care and His love for human beings. Although God rules human beings in everything they do, yet He also gives them power; that is, intelligence and reason. This is necessary so that human beings can feel the difference between being moved and moving from their own volition. Why is this necessary? It is necessary in order for them to be able to feel the difference between themselves, as human beings, and God. In this way human beings are very fortunate among God's creatures, for they can experience how their life is in this world and how their life is within the power of God without our knowing how.
It is like that, brothers and sisters, and also, because you always have a connection with the power of God, you will at the least be able to correct your own wrong actions. What are wrong actions? They are actions in excess of what is normal. For instance, to look at things is normal. If, having looked, it is finished within quite a short time, that is normal. If you watch a film, for instance, once you have seen it, then it is over. But you should not then go to the cinema every evening. Nor should you continually watch the things that are pleasing. For if what you do goes beyond certain limits, that forces something and will automatically have its results. What will be the results? People will get sick.
It is not the laws of God that decree sickness, brothers and sisters. No, this comes from people's own mistakes. They act and behave in ways that go beyond the limits of their capacity. Yes, if they go beyond the limitations of their legs, then at the worst they will just be unable to walk any more, and the same applies to the hands. But if it is the brain, if it is the head, if these go beyond their limitations, the least that will happen is that they go mad.
That is how it is, brothers and sisters. It is thus clear that your actions and behavior, which you feel are always linked to the power of God, will provide you with an appropriate place, not only after you die, but also during your life in this world. It will be what the Dutch call regelmatig, regulated. So it will be properly regulated and organized, and the results will be healthful, which means that you will always have good health. And also you will remain young, and you will have a long life, if that is a possibility, for the length of a life must be left to God, so it is said.
Of course that is so, but it is of course better when you are able to organize yourselves, than when you are not. That is why in the old days people used to say that mountain dwellers lived longer because of the peace and quiet there. Not like you, who keep on thinking all the time, sleeping or waking. If you are women, you think about clothes, or if not clothes then something or other; about make up and things like that. If you are men, of course there is something or other that you think about.
That is how it is, so that human life is very subject to the influence of the pleasures of heart and mind, and is not subject to the jiwa, no. That is why, even though God gives you a heart and mind and intelligence, and although these must be made to work, you must nevertheless not neglect your worship of God; that is, you must not abandon the kejiwaan, so that your jiwa can always prevent you from acting wrongly.
Thus it is clear, brothers and sisters, that by always staying close to the power of God and by always receiving guidance and direction from God, not only will you become quiet and peaceful and become able to find the right way after you leave this world, but you will also be safe and happy during your life in this world. Of course, this is what people are looking for. People are always looking for ways and means to make themselves secure, to make themselves happy and to make themselves quiet and peaceful.
Of course, brothers and sisters, you yourselves know whether or not rich people are peaceful and content. They are not. Are people in high positions contented? No. The higher their position, the more things they have to think about. And so the richer people are, the more apt they are to think about money instead of their own lives. It even goes so far that it still goes on while they are asleep, and they are still thinking in millions of dollars. Yes, and even more so if they set up a bank. Wah, this money of mine will increase every year by such and such and such an amount. Well, is that a pleasant life for such a person? No.
This is how it is, brothers and sisters, and these things must not happen to us. So although Bapak may pray, for instance, that you will all become millionaires, yet when you want to sleep you will still be able to say "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar" and go off to sleep at once. Thus it can be said that your money is safe and you are safe.
But if you are influenced by material forces, by money, your money may be safe, but it will not make you safe. Thus your money is safe but your life is not safe. It should not be like that, but they should both be the same, your life should be safe and your money should be safe. It is not necessary for your to think about it; your money has its own nature, and there is no point in thinking about it all the time. But if you do not keep on thinking about it, your own strength will envelop the money. In that way it is not you that need the money, but the money that needs you. Yes, you just stay still and the money comes to you. "Hey, what are you doing just sitting still?" "I need some money". And the money comes to you. It is the same way with other things.
Brothers and sisters, you hear this tale as a kind of joke, something comic, but in fact that is how it really is. You can feel it.
If you very much hope for something or other, which means you want it very much, it is not possible for you to have it. Such things are mostly impossible for you to have. For instance, you may buy a lottery ticket, and then, having bought it, you keep on thinking about it and imagining to yourself how, when you win the first prize, you will buy a hundred motor cars, for instance. You will build a house on a road, four stories high, or three or two or ten. But do you eventually win that prize? No. Mostly the people who win prizes, who win that prize, are just the ones who never think about it. Sometimes they have even been forced into buying the ticket.
So it is clear that it is actually the things that one is not thinking about that come to one. That is an illustration of it. It is only so for people who really do not yet understand and are not yet doing the latihan, and also who are not yet willed to do so by the One Almighty God. But that is not the case with those who have received the guidance and direction of the One Almighty God. For them, this becomes the normal thing. It becomes a habit, like Bapak said just now; when you have no money you just stay quiet, because you need money. "Eh, what is this? Is it money?" "Yes", says the money, "here I am". Thus the money comes to you. Yes, it is like that, brothers and sisters.
Bapak has experienced these things. Yes, if Bapak talks about it, it is because Bapak has experienced it. Thus it is clear, brothers and sisters, that if I do not need material things, the material things are sure to need me. It cannot be otherwise. What is the reason for this? Of course the reason is that it is what God has decreed. God has decreed that human beings are created already accompanied by everything they need in their lives; accompanied that is, by all the roh, which means the life forces. These are the roh raewani or material life force, the rob nabadi or vegetable life force - food, that is - the roh khewani, or animal life force, the roh jasmani or ordinary human life force, the roh rohani or perfect human life force. And there are higher forces still, which are called the roh rahmani and the roh rabbani. All these form' the framework of mankind, the framework of life, the nature of life.
If you stand firm upon your belief in the One Almighty God and you are steadfast in this, all these things will come to you, so that if it is a case of food, the food will certainly feed you. But if you go looking for them, well, then you are here and the food is over there. But if you are already strong, the food will be like this, all around you. Thus there will actually be food to the right and to the left, before you and behind you, calling out to you to come and eat it. "Come on, come and eat me".
Well, brothers and sisters, that is by way of entertainment, an intermezzo, but in fact that is how it is. You will be able to witness it later on, when you have to some extent begun to run enterprises. For instance, you may go into the field of farming. If you begin to run an enterprise, and if your actions have a connection with your jiwa, and with the power of God which envelops you, then it will be as if you receive guidance in whatever you do.
To take another example, suppose you are building houses, an architect. On occasions when you find yourself at a dead end with no way out, the way to find a correct solution is at once to make yourself quiet, and then you will see a way to put things right. Indeed, brothers and sisters, that is what clever people do. The people who are said to be clever and who make discoveries of which they can be proud, such as atomic energy and atomic weapons, nuclear power and so on, discover these things at moments when they stop and are quiet. They are quiet and not thinking about anything, and then they receive.
You can try this for yourselves. If you keep on remembering about something, that it might be kept somewhere, and you are always thinking about it, you will not find it. Maybe a day goes by, or a month; may be two days or two months. This may go on for months, and you never find it. But if you stop thinking about it, it is as if you are made to remember and then you find it. That is why when people were going on a journey they used to have a custom of coming back again after leaving the house. Then you remember whatever you have forgotten to take with you. Not like in the usual way, which is that you are already a thousand miles away when you suddenly remember all the things you have left behind. Then you will find it a nuisance to go back and fetch the things you have forgotten, won't you?
So it is clear that what is received in the latihan kejiwaan of Subud is for the jiwa. It is for you, but not for you in this world, it is for you after you have left this world. For the present, the usefulness of the latihan kejiwaan is that it enables you to receive benefits in your worldly affairs; that is, so that you run enterprises. In this way you will be able to feel the use of the latihan kejiwaan of Subud. Just for example, you may be running a cattle farming enterprise, for instance. You see a cow, and because you are already able to have a connection with what you see, and because you are in fact a cattle farmer, you will be able to know whether it will be profitable to keep this cow. Supposing that you sell it at some time in the future, you will be able to understand what to do, as if this cow were telling you "Sell me for $ 400", for instance, "You should sell me, and not sell me here, but over there".
Thus in all these things it is as if you have indications. And in this way you will feel how lucky you are, and if you feel that you are lucky, then of course you will say that to some extent this is the result and the usefulness of the latihan kejiwaan of Subud.
This is just to give you a little raw material. There are other strange things that you will experience, and it is not necessary for Bapak to describe these at present, or you might get too ambitious and go after things too hard and hope for things too much, and then not be able to achieve them. To some extent Subud members have already also had these experiences. As an example, Bapak will describe something that Varindra Vittachi experienced. He is an author, a journalist, a writer, but on one occasion, it was as if he had lost his inspiration and could not think of anything at all to say. At the same time, it was very necessary for him to write something, for otherwise he could not earn any money. Then he stopped and put it all away from him, became quiet and did latihan. Suddenly it was as if his mind was opened, opened out wide. Then got up, took his pen and wrote and he wrote a great deal He admits that when he had written it, what he received when he was quiet like that was more than what he could have done by thinking, and it was also more to the point, in that what he foretold actually happened.
So there are some among you who are already to some extent able to receive. Thus it is clear that the enterprises which Bapak proposes for all the members are very necessary for all of you.
And Bapak hopes that you will carry these out seriously, because by running enterprises you will be able to feel the result of the latihan kejiwaan which you have done, and which you have been doing for quite a long time; for ten years already, for instance, or for eleven years, twelve years, thirteen years.
How much more will this be in the years to come, when you will have had many years experience of the latihan kejiwaan. So it is very important and necessary for you to be able to get some results from the efforts you have made. You must not let the time you have spent in the latihan be spent in vain, brothers and sisters. Thus it is an obligation for us to worship God. God wills that human beings should really be able to calculate, calculate the way to live, calculate and feel the progress of their lives. In this way you are accountable for your lives, you experience your lives, you are really conscious of the environment of your lives, as is the case with God. God created this world; He created the universe with all that it contains, and all this was calculated. If it were not all calculated, of course this world on which we live would have collisions and would run into the other worlds which human beings call Jupiter, Saturn and the rest of them.
Thus it is clear that God calculates everything that He does. How much the more so should we. Thus we have to take everything into consideration. It is not just money that we have to consider, no, we have to calculate how not to ruin our eyes, and the way not to ruin eyes is not to stay up too late at night. Twelve o'clock is late enough, half past twelve is already too late. You should not go on staying up late night after night, so that you get to enjoy twanging a guitar at two o'clock in the morning. Twang, twang, twang; two o'clock in the morning, and you just keep on twanging. Eventually your eyes become damaged, and not just your eyes, but also other things. You must not do that. So we have to live as people who really calculate their lives and the way to live.
This is how it is, brothers and sisters, and so we are truly guided and led in our latihan kejiwaan, guided in absolutely everything. That is why Bapak urges you really to set about running enterprises. Furthermore, brothers and sisters, we can only run enterprises if we have the wherewithal to run them. That is certain. Thus we have to find the resources and the manpower for them amongst the members. And how are we to find the resources for running these enterprises? If we are not strong enough individually, then we must get together and join forces. Thus if you personally are not strong enough, join forces with other members. Even if you are strong, it is best to join with other people. In this way you are trained, and you train yourselves, to work together. You collaborate, you remind one another, you help one another, you care for one another. This too is a resource, and so apart from having the financial resources to run an enterprise you will also have the resources of good customs and habits, resources of character and behavior, resources of feeling. This is important.
If you do not have these resources, things cannot possibly work out. If you only put in money to buy shares, it cannot work out. Apart from putting in money, you also have to put in faith and determination, peace and quietness. This is important for you all, and you have already been trained in all this; you have already received in the latihan kejiwaan. So put it to work and put it into practice, brothers and sisters.
You must not go on just doing the latihan for years and years. When Bapak comes here and asks how things are going, you reply "I go on doing the latihan, Bapak, every Monday, every Tuesday". "What are the results?” asks Bapak. "I don't know", you say. Well then, find out. You have to be able to receive what the results are and what the fruits are; you have to be able to receive what they are. See how it is. You remember that when Bapak was here last time he did not do any testing such as he is doing nowadays. There was not yet any testing then. Why is Bapak doing testing now, whereas formerly he did none? It is now time to do it, brothers and sisters. Perhaps later on, when Bapak has been here several times more, he will test in still another way. This is done according to your progress. Now, after all this length of time, you have made just a little bit of progress. That is why Bapak is doing testing in accordance with the level on which you receive now.
That, brothers and sisters, is why you should not think it strange that there should be enterprises and a bank. You should not think this is something novel, something that conflicts with activity in the field of the spirit. It is not like that at all. On the contrary, this is what God wills, so that you will be secure in this world and the next, safe and happy in both your worlds. That means safe and happy in your life here as well as in your life after death.
Furthermore, brothers and sisters, when you have got the enterprises running, and when they are producing enough profits, then Subud as a whole can establish schools and hospitals as well as latihan premises and guest houses. And in the schools that we establish we shall be able to employ our own man power, especially the helpers, so that then the name "helper", which they already bear, will have real significance. Because the helpers who are employed as teachers in the schools, those who are qualified teachers, will be able to look at the children they teach and know how to direct them into the right channels, which match their natural talents. In this way the children will never get into blind alleys, but will be able to keep on learning. There is no one at all who can be said to have no capacity whatsoever to learn. So all of them will be able to receive instruction and to continue to learn lessons which are in accordance with their own talents. In this way the helpers can really put into practice what they have received from the One Almighty God.
It will be the same thing too in setting up homes for neglected old people, which means those who have no family, no children or grandchildren, so that they live neglected. The helpers can provide a better way for them to live, so that these old people will be truly grateful to the helpers because they have really enabled them to practice the true worship of the One Almighty God.
It will be the same for the helpers who are employed as doctors in the hospitals - of course, those who possess the necessary qualifications and diplomas - and as nurses and so on. Apart from being able to cure the sick people by medical means, through the remedies which they prescribe as doctors, they can also make use of the jiwa and they can use the fruits of the latihan kejiwaan. A sick person can be cured not only because of the medicine given by the doctor, but also because of the doctor’s inner strength, the strength of his jiwa. And it will happen of itself that a person who is cured through the power of the jiwa will come back to the remembrance of the One Almighty God.
This what is called amal, brothers and sisters. So it is really true brothers and sisters, that Subud members, Subud helpers, can make their lives into amal, both their own personal lives as well as their public lives and their lives before the One Almighty God. This is what is embodied in the expression we use, "from the spiritual to the material and from the material to the spiritual".
We exist because of God, and once we exist we return to the One Almighty God, showing that we are of His creation.
Brothers and sisters, when you are running, or about to start running an enterprise such as Bapak has described to you, where is the money coming from to provide capital for this enterprise that you run? Bapak proposes that all this shall come from our own selves, brothers and sisters. By what means is it to come from ourselves, brothers and sisters? Of course you can understand for yourselves how it can be done; that is, through working as a group, which means by working together and cooperating. Together we shall establish something to hold our money, which even though it is not very much from each one is yet quite a lot as a whole. In Dutch they say "Vele kleintjes makeneen groote" ( Many a pickle makes a mickle ) Scottish proverb or ( "many small amounts make a large amount" ).
Thus something made up of small pebbles can become a mountain, it can become very large. Thus ten dollars can become a hundred dollars, and eventually many millions of dollars. This comes from ourselves, and so it is we who must set it up.
If all this is coming from our own selves, it will of course be what we put into this bank, into the vessel we create to contain this money, which is our idea. Thus the bank that we create will not be like the kind of bank that attracts money and piles it up, so that the bank is full of all the money kept in it. No, this bank that we create will be created so as to be able to strengthen the standing of our spiritual brotherhood of Subud throughout the world, which will act and be active in what is called social equity and justice.
Thus it is not the bank that we shall be making rich when we put money into it. No, what we shall be making rich will be buildings for the worship of God. That is, the latihan premises, the guest houses for visitors, for all your visitors who come from other places or go from here to other places, homes for neglected children, for normal children and for backward children. So that we can really develop and we can really put into practice what we have received from the One Almighty God, so that these backward children can cease to be backward, but become children who really make progress in their lessons and can learn things.
And the hospitals to accommodate sick people will be staffed by our own helper doctors, and they will also be able to take in any of our members who are in what is now commonly called a crisis. This will allow our members to go into our own hospitals when they are in crisis, and we shall not, as at present, be forced to put them into hospitals other than our own, so that we do not know how they are being treated or how they are being looked after.
This, brothers and sisters, is why Bapak very much needs that we should quickly form or create or establish this body that Bapak calls a bank, and to which he has already given the name of Bank Sinar Kencana Mulia. So will this bank be comparable in the future to other banks, and only make its money fertile because it gets interest when people use it? No, that is why it must be laid down in the rules and regulations of this bank that so and so much percent is to be used for the development of the spiritual brotherhood of Subud, not for enriching the bank itself. No.
Thus it is clear, brothers and sisters, that this bank that we are setting up does not belong to any one country. It is not a bank belonging to any one nation, but it is the Subud bank of all the peoples of mankind in this world, which includes every nation in this world. In this way, and with this bank, Subud can really create prosperity and awareness and social security for all mankind. Thus it is not Subud only that benefits, but if Subud becomes strong these things will spill over outside Subud.
In this way one can say that Subud will be able to have a world wide place. The doors will be open to us in every country, wherever we may wish to go and give guidance to the people of these countries. Why so? It will be so because Subud has truly given its services to the general public and to mankind as a whole. And also it is truly the nature of Subud to help every nation in which it works or in which it cares for the inhabitants in the field of social work, for instance.
Brothers and sisters, these will be the next steps to be taken, following on the enterprises, so that eventually we shall be able to carry out the ideals of Subud properly, and in accordance with the will of the One Almighty God. For this reason Bapak urges you to give your attention to this, because there are quite a lot of you who are active in banking circles and in banks, so that Bapak hopes that this bank we envisage will really become firmly founded. In this way, brothers and sisters, evidence of Subud’s progress is evidence of the progress of - the progress all of you, and the progress of Subud can also be accomplished through the activities of its members and by your sincere work and real attention and care.
To continue, brothers and sisters, Bapak and his party will be leaving Edinburgh tomorrow and going on to Manchester and other places. So Bapak and his party do not forget to thank you very much for your welcome, your care and your gifts. They hope that you will receive a corresponding return from the One Almighty God. And on the departure of Bapak and his party, Bapak also prays that you will receive the grace and mercy of the One Almighty God, and that you will be safe and happy.
