Brothers and sisters, this is a preliminary to saying goodbye, because tomorrow morning Bapak and his party will be leaving San Francisco for Los Angeles. But this time Bapak’s journey will be different; he will leave by car instead of by plane. He will probably stop on the way or stay overnight in several places; maybe for a night or two or for several nights. Then he goes on to Los Angeles, and from Los Angeles back to Vancouver, and from Vancouver back south to Mexico. That, brothers and sisters, is why Bapak and his party are saying goodbye to you when they leave here. May both Bapak and his party and all of you always be protected by the One Almighty God, and may we all always be in condition of well being and happiness.

Now Bapak will give you a talk. Bapak feels that this talk he is going to give you will be very important, for it is closely connected with the one he gave earlier on. Brothers and sisters, if I remember what was said both by the helpers and by the committee members, it was that what delays cooperation amongst you all is nothing else than the problem of money, nothing else than the problem of your worldly needs.

In this way it is obvious, brothers and sisters, that we cannot do anything without money; we cannot manage. So we are obliged to need money. Indeed God does not dislike money, no. God does not wish people to avoid material things, no. For material things, including money, are really very necessary for our lives in this world, for people could not live in this world if they lived without material things.

As you knew, clothes, money, houses, in short, all the things of this world, are material. So if you do not like material things, do not like money, you are like the people who live in isolated places and always wear only yellow robes, and who only eat food given to them by other people. That is not God’s will.

It is God’s will for people to continue to live in this world as human beings. And God does not worry about the jiwa of people who do that becoming involved with material things, or that they will give too much weight to material things, so that these will influence them. For as well as equipping people for life in this world, God also gives them something to keep them close to the power of the One Almighty God. This, which has happened to all of you, is really clearly shown in the existence of the latihan kejiwaan of Subud.

The latihan kejiwaan of Subud comes because you are separated from the influence of the nafsu, which makes their home in your hearts and in your brains, or in your hearts and minds. This is like the morning dew which evaporates when the light of the rising sun falls upon it. Thus, it is clear, brothers and sisters, that when the light of Allah rises, the light of God’s power, then the nafsu that always influence the whole of your inner self will automatically disappear or be put aside. This, brothers and sisters, illustrates the reality of what happens in the latihan kejiwaan of Subud, which you too have experiences and which you follow each time you do the latihan kejiwaan of Subud.

The nature of the Subud latihan kejiwaan illustrates how the whole of ourselves, the whole of yourselves works continuously. It demonstrates that the whole of the inner feeling works, every part of your self shows that it is alive. Thus, it is clear, brothers and sisters, that to live is work and whoever works is alive. That is why it is so necessary that so long as people live in this world, they need to go on working as people who live in the world, and this is in accordance with the will of God.

You are lucky in that all of you who are practicing the latihan kejiwaan are easily able to achieve an awakening of yourselves, an awakening of every part of you, an awakening of your bodies both inwardly and in the outward and visible part.

The conclusion to be drawn is that what you receive in the latihan is intended to enable you to become used to receiving through the gift of God as ordinary people. This is what the messengers of God have said in the past; that you as human beings must not in anything you do depart from God, who always protects you and always gives you indications.

This is what the prophets have stated, the messengers of God who lived long ago. This has become clear and you have received and experienced it. Thus it is clear, brothers and sisters, that what the messengers of God have said is really true and not lies. That is why it is very necessary for you to carry out and put into practice what you have received in the latihan kejiwaan. It can then be said, brothers and sisters, that in every step you take, every action you perform, in everything that happens to you, brothers and sisters, you remain close to the power of God, which guides and directs you in the direction you wish and aim for, that is, towards the One Almighty God.

In this connection, brothers and sisters, this is in order that you shall really be able to put into effect what the latihan kejiwaan illustrates, and also in order to accustom you not to act and, behave contrary to the will or God, and not go against the way the kind way the best of human beings behave. Thus, as well as being Subud people, practicing the latihan kejiwaan, you also need to work on your own initiative, do what we call enterprise. These enterprises accustom you to act and to work with the guidance and direction of God. The people who receive this way are very fortunate. This is what those people desire who do prihatin for many years so as to be able to receive the whispers from their jiwa. This, brothers and sisters, is why Bapak suggests to the members that they should be really active in setting about what Bapak has proposed, that is, enterprises.

As you know, you will not be able to carry cub your enterprises unless you have capital or unless there is the capital for them. So far as possible we should avoid waiting and hoping for contributions or donations from other sources to provide this capital, which means relying on sources beyond ourselves. We need to set about this in a cooperative way, doing it amongst ourselves.

You know that Subud includes people from seventy nine countries. Thus it is clear that if we really set something up and really create something able to provide us with capital, even though this capital also comes from ourselves, we shall be able to carry out the enterprises seriously. And out of these enterprises we are running and for which we ourselves provide the capital, we shall meet all our needs, so that we no longer reach a dead end or be unable to work as well as we might, as in the case for helpers and committee members at the present.

It is therefore very necessary to set up our enterprises in order not to let things go on any longer in the way you have been talking about. It is also necessary for us to be sure of setting up the financial body that will make provision for these enterprises. That is why Bapak hopes that you all really take this to heart and be enthusiastic, so that this body will be firmly established. As well as making your jiwa accustomed to working with your mind, with your self, and developing together with them, you will also bring about a healthy state in the economy of your own country. For not all of the seventy nine countries included in the spiritual brotherhood of Subud have their economy in a healthy state. Not all of them are in conditions of plenty. Perhaps more than half of them are in a state of suffering, and also in a state of development. And it is these developing countries that we can benefit with our enterprises, benefit through our actions so that the strength of Subud, the strength of the spiritual brotherhood of Subud will be doubled, more than doubled.

Bapak can illustrate this by the situation in Indonesia itself. In the old days, Indonesia possessed not less than a hundred sugar factories, not less than a hundred. But because of the past great war there are now not more than a third of them still. in operation. It is thus clear that the riches of nature that wore formerly obtained have really decreased, This is how it is for Indonesia, brothers and sisters. Indonesia needs to bring the other two thirds of these factories back to life. If the Subud members in Indonesia are able to do this work in Indonesia, because they have the capital and something by way of a guarantee, then what a great work that would be. They could certainly double their profits. If we really can do this, then the spiritual brotherhood of Subud in Indonesia will probably be able to contribute out of its funds to help other countries, and to help the Subud members in countries other than Indonesia.

On the other side of the picture, there are many countries still needing this help, as in Africa and in South America. And this is very important for Subud members, so that they can be pioneers in their respective countries. In this ways brothers and sisters, Subud and its members, the spiritual brotherhood of Subud and its members, will show an example to the human race in this world. They will show that Subud and Subud members can fulfill two duties in life, two duties appointed by the One Almighty God. The first is to worship God and the second is to be capable of providing for one’s life and making it a happy one while living in this world.

If you think about it, of course the money that comes from you will not be more than perhaps ten million dollars. It will not be more than that. It is obvious brothers and sisters, that it will not be more than that. But if our bank can get going and if we can establish the Subud bank, which we are calling Sinar Kencana Mulia, and if it can really function and those who work in it are really experts and able to do their work, then under these conditions, the bank will be like a receptacle, a large container. For there are people with money who have millions of dollars unemployed, and they need to put their money to work. Why have they not done so? It is because they are still looking for somewhere to put it, looking for people who can make it work and who will be reliable and who will really employ the money so that it will yield the required profits.

That is why the strength and progress of the bank we are creating and establishing will lie not only in the members’ money, but in the work of the people in the bank. Bapak has already chosen them brothers and sisters. They are people really capable of doing this work. That is why Bapak has situated the bank at Wolfsburg in Germany, Bapak therefore says to all the members that they should take an interest in this. You must not let it happen that the bank we establish does not go, it must go. The idea or picture is indeed already there. The Subud bank is the bank of the Subud members, who are spread all over the whole world and who come from seventy nine countries and from every race in the world.

Thus, if the bank really goes well, it will certainly become an example to show the general public that Subud members really do abide by the commandments of the One Almighty God and that they can make this world a world for the worship of the One Almighty God, and can bring peace between races and nations, in short, between all the people who live in this world.

Bapak will give you a small example, something that has already happened, something Bapak has experienced while he has been on this journey. Before he went to Australia, the Australian members had bought a total of about one thousand seven hundred shares in the Sinar Kencana Mulia bank. But after Bapak had explained about the benefits and also the usefulness and necessity of Subud establishing the bank and of Subud setting up enterprises, then after Bapak had explained those things, it awakened their will so much that it aroused them to such an extent that as a result, one thousand seven hundred shares became five thousand.

It continued in the same way in New Zealand. The figure there eventually rose from five hundred and eighty share to two thousand five hundred. And in Japan, when Bapak was in Toyko, the number of share before he went there had been one thousand six hundred, and it became five thousand. This has been Bapak’s experience so to some extent it makes Bapak feel happy and satisfied. That was the way that the members in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan demonstrated their interest.

Now Bapak has come to visit you here. Bapak has read the U.S.A., which Bapak had hoped would be like a strong backbone, Bapak hears that the U.S.A. has barely reached a total of two thousand shares. So Bapak needs to come and visit you here. It is necessary so that Bapak can explain clearly. It is not our intention, not the intention of the Subud brotherhood, to seek for riches, no. Possibly you feel and think that the spiritual should not be mixed with the material. That is so where the jiwa is concerned, brothers and sisters. You never hear of spiritual rice; that does not exist. Nor have you heard of spiritual breads, that does not exist. Nor are there spiritual Chevrolets or Cadillacs; those do not exist. Cadillacs and Chevrolets and bread and butter, worldly butter, not spiritual.

Thus you must already be able to make a distinction between spiritual and physical. Spiritual food is the latihan kejiwaan, when you do the latihan kejiwaan. Could you live in the world just by doing the latihan? You could not. Your life in this world requires you to eat, and therefore food needs to be provided. Therefore we very much need both the spiritual and the physical. We need our jiwa so that we can really worship the One Almighty God; we need. our jiwa to be able to rise up and become the jiwa of a perfect human being. And our bodies, our hearts and brains, our hearts and minds need to become hati maknawi, the hearts of perfect human beings, wide as the ocean. That means that we can accept everything. We are not hurt by any of the things that usually hurt the heart. Maknawi is the technical term for this.

That, then, is why Bapak has come here to visit you, in order to wake you up. You must not want to keep on singing the same old song. Indeed, the old songs, the old tunes, brothers and sisters, the old songs said that if you wanted to get near to God, you must not eat or sleep. How could you do that? You would die.

Many people, brothers and sisters, also say that it is the dead who can meet with God. That is why when someone dies, people say inna lillahi wa inna ilaiha rojiun, which means we come from God and return to God, so that the soul of that person can meet with God. If we only take these words into account brothers and sisters, then people meet God when they die, while once they are dead, they do not come back to life. Thus, supposing they do not meet God, you cannot know about it, because they will not tell you. The person who had died will not be able to bring you the news. Thus, now we have to turn these songs and tunes inside out. We must look forward, not back.

So it is that with the advent of the latihan kejiwaan of Subud, brothers and sisters, and of what we call the guidance and direction of God, you are made able to worship God in all your activities and in everything you do. In order to make you accustomed to doing that, Bapak puts it to you and Bapak suggests to all the members that they should work at enterprises and carry out enterprises. By carrying on these enterprises you can, as it were, try yourselves out to see whether you can do it or not. If one is like a human being, a perfect human being, of course one knows what is one’s true talent. This makes your inner self accustomed to work and to live standing on your own feet.

This is what is needed brothers and sisters, and therefore Bapak suggests to the members to carry on enterprises. You cannot carry on these enterprises without any resource, and we need to create those resources and to be able to establish a body of the kind usually called a bank. This bank we have named Sinar Kencana Mulia. This then, is the reason why we need to create this bank, it is necessary in order to be able to provide our resources, and we ourselves are going to establish it. That is why when Bapak heard, brothers and sisters, that only a little over two thousand shares had been taken up in America, I felt I must be dreaming. Now bestir yourselves so that I will no longer feel that I am dreaming and so that Bapak’s dream does not come true.

Bapak hopes that you will really give your attention to this and take an active part in it, because world conditions are that each country has its own regulations. Thus, this country is different from a other and the other is different from the rest and so on. That is why Bapak leaves it to you and your own judgment. What matters is that our Subud bank should be established. It must not happen otherwise, it certainly has to be established. Bapak has already demonstrated the truth of this. With the establishment of the Sinar Kencana Mulia bank all difficulties will disappear and be swept away, including those that are already apparent and which you yourselves have been experiencing at this time. This is why Bapak hopes that you will exert yourselves in this matter. Bapak leaves it to you and he also leaves it to the good sense of the committee members to arrange everything so that it goes well. Bapak hopes you will act quickly and will leave it too late, because if you delay, your feelings of enthusiasm about setting up something to help our enterprises to work will diminish.

Now Bapak and his party thank you very much for your welcome, you care, and your gifts to Bapak and his party. Bapak will say no more, except to pray that all of us, Bapak and his party as well as yourselves, will always be protected by the One Almighty God, and live well and happily, never lacking for anything.
