Brothers and sisters, Bapak will continue to give explanations this evening, as he promised to do, first one that concerns the kejiwaan, and after that, one that is connected with the future establishment of the Subud Bank Sinar Kencana Mulia.
Brothers and sisters, if we see it from the angle of the latihan kejiwaan of Subud, which you have received, then where the understanding and the evidence of the worship of the One Almighty God are concerned, it is the will of God that in every movement and every action you should be able to keep a connection or to receive a connection between the will of God and your own wills. There is therefore no time at which your worship of God is not present. It depends upon yourselves as to whether everything you do can receive a content from this latihan kejiwaan. And because you have been able to receive a connection between your kejiwaan and your minds, then it automatically becomes very necessary for you to be careful and cautious in all your actions and behavior, When you are truly able to do this, then all the time you are working, whether you are working in an office or in the fields, or riding in a car or a train or piloting a plane, or doing anything else, in short, in all your daily work one can say that your worship of the One Almighty God will never cease.
Of course in the old days the worship of God was reserved for appointed times and seasons, so that people who could not manage to set aside those appointed times automatically neglected their worship of the One Almighty God. The feeling of worshipping God became more and more remote as time went on, and people became less and less able to feel it and receive it. It is even possible that it is also still happening up to now, so that the worship of God is only practiced by certain people who are just appointed to do this, whereas other people, ordinary people, are not appointed to do it and are not charged with the performance of the worship of God.
With the appearance of the latihan kejiwaan of Subud, brothers and sisters, it is, on the contrary, not just specially appointed people in the spiritual brotherhood, not just the helpers, who are required to practice the worship of God, but also the members that is, all of you. In this way it is not only the helpers who practice the worship of God, but all the Subud members, all of you. That is the reason why in these present times the worship of God, and especially ours in the spiritual brotherhood of Subud, is to be practiced by everyone. At present it is just you who are doing this, because it has not yet extended to the whole of mankind. It is just the Subud members, just you. Thus although you may be only ordinary members, which means not helpers, you are already able to worship God directly because of what you have received in the latihan kejiwaan of Subud, which is in fact guidance and direction from the One Almighty God. Indeed, worship used to be performed only by people who were really specially appointed to this function, and these people used to advise and instruct the ordinary people who wished to take part in the worship of God. And the people who participated in worshipping God because of the instructions and advice given to them by those whose only duty it was to practice their worship, could only take part provided that they worshipped according to what they had been told. Thus they were not truly worshipping and not really making any effort to be able really to receive and really to understand the real and true intention behind what they were taught in their religious schools or groups.
Whereas nowadays, brothers and sisters, there is actually no theory in Subud, there is no instruction and there is no teaching. What Bapak is saying here is not like a teaching, not like a theory, but Bapak is giving explanations as if he were telling a kind of story about Bapak’s experiences in receiving the latihan kejiwaan. As for what you receive each time you do the latihan kejiwaan, that is what is called the practical side of it. But if we call it “practicing”, it is not that either. You are not practicing it, you are being practiced by the power of God, so that you are being guided and led. For example, you can move and not feel that you are moving yourself. You are being moved, you laugh, you sing; not by your own will but because you are willed to behave in that way. Thus it is clear that what you have received through what you experience in the latihan kejiwaan is all guidance and direction from Almighty God. So it is clear that the One Almighty God guides you and leads you, so that you are able to worship Him, able to worship the One Almighty God.
In this way it is no longer necessary for you to ask what is the aim of the latihan kejiwaan of Subud, and what is the need for it. Already you do not need to ask, because of course the aim of thee latihan kejiwaan of Subud will be according to the one who directs it. Thus, because the one who directs it is the One Almighty God, Who in Islam is called Allah, your aim is to worship the one Almighty God. And why is it necessary and what is its use? It is necessary and useful in order for you to be able to understand your life; that is, your outer life as well as your life after death. Thus the guidance and direction that comes from the One Almighty God to all of you has two aims. It is directed to the life after death and it is directed to the life before death; that is, your life so long as you are living in this world. In this way, it is clear that although God wills you to worship Him and wills that you should not neglect your worship of the One Almighty God, yet He also wills that you should pay attention to and provide for your life while you are still in this world.
Because you have received guidance and direction from God, then even though you are doing your ordinary work, doing your worldly work, yet for you the case is different. That means that in all your actions and in all the work you do, you are always overshadowed by God, which means that you are always accompanied: always watched over, always protected. and always given indications by the One Almighty God. And when that is so, then the longer time goes on the more evidence you will have, the more progress you will make and the more you will be able to receive, so that in your worship of God there will no longer be any division between your jiwa and your inner self.
It is this that the teachers of religion intended, that the worship of God should become habitual. But the people received this teaching, the people who received this advice, misunderstood it. They got it wrong; they thought that, provided that they did as they had been instructed to do, and provided that they followed what they had been told, that was enough. Thus they got used to doing that ,until they were unable to grasp the content of their habitual worship of God.
This is where you are different. You are required to make your worship of God a habit while you work as a cashier, counting money; while you work as a driver, driving a car, while you are piloting a plane; while you are traveling, while you are sleeping and so on. You accustom yourselves not to be cut off from the One Who created you: that is, the One Almighty God. This is the necessity and the benefit of the latihan kejiwaan of Subud which you receive. This is why God’s gift to you is so far reaching, so high, so noble. So high is the gift of God to the members of Subud that we Subud members have obtained the guidance and direction of the One Whom we hold in the highest honor and Whom we worship throughout our lives, both here in this world and in the hereafter. Of course, brothers and sisters, there are still many Subud members who still do not know this for sure, so that they still ask Bapak whether setting up enterprises will not become an obstacle to their worship of the One Almighty God.. Such habits of thought, brothers and sisters, are habits of the past. They are habits such as Bapak mentioned just now, whereby people only put their faith in other people and are not yet able to trust their own selves.
So Bapak’s answer to their question is therefore “No. On the contrary; in the true, the really genuine worship of the One Almighty God by human beings, God wills that they should not give up their ordinary ways of life in this world, such as seeking for pleasure, seeking recreation and entertainment, and also, of course, seeking to earn a living, to marry, and so on. Indeed, brothers and sisters, that is the way human beings in this world are made, and it is necessary for them to provide for their lives in the world as well as in the hereafter. When the time comes that they can no longer continue to live in this world, people have to be able to return to their eternal origin, their perfect origin, their noble origin.
So it is clear, brothers and sisters, that the establishment of enterprises in the spiritual brotherhood of Subud will not become an obstacle. Just the opposite, it will actually accustom you not to allow the material forces to rule you and influence you or to use you as their instruments all the time. Firstly, it is from God to man, which means that human beings exist because of God. In our terminology this is now expressed as “from the spiritual to the material”. So human beings are able to make this and that because of God. Human beings are able to live because of God. In short, everything that people can do they can do because of God. “From the spiritual to the material”. Then, after that, we can live happily in this world.
This is the material. Then, in order that we can return to God, in order that we can return to the spiritual, there is the expression “from the material to the spiritual”. Thus it is from the spiritual to the material and then from the material to the spiritual.
This, brothers and sisters, is why we need to establish enterprises in the spiritual brotherhood of Subud; in order that in our lives in this world, in everything that we do of a material nature, we can pierce right through it to God. Thus in counting money we do not allow it to be just counting money, but it reminds us of God. That is an example, if that is what you do. If what you do is latihan, every step you take is filled by the repetition of ‘God, God., God,’ or ‘Allah, Allah, Allah”. It is also the same in the movements of your hands, and also with the other parts of you. Thus in your movements you can break through from the material part of you to the spiritual.
This is what makes it necessary for Bapak to establish enterprises in the spiritual brotherhood of Subud. For although you may not like having the material world in your worship of God, yet you are bound to be hindered by the material world, you are bound to be hindered by the requirements of your life. Bapak just takes this as an example; Bapak is here, and because Bapak has come to Tokyo, you need to come here. But the Subud members who live at a distance from Tokyo, and who do not happen to have money:, cannot come. Thus it is clear, brothers and sisters, that although money is an obstacle to your worship of God, yet unless you have money you will not be able to do things that you ought to be able to do.
This, brothers and sisters, is what makes it necessary for Bapak to create enterprises among the Subud members. It is in order that we can be amply provided for both outwardly and inwardly, inwardly and outwardly; both spiritually and materially, materially and spiritually,, This is the need for it, brothers and sisters. Thus you need not worry any more that, if you have a lot of money, you will then forget about God. No. For at times when you are handling that money, God will already be filling your self, including your hands, as you can feel. This is evident, brothers and sisters, and so Bapak does not need to explain very much or very extensively; you can receive it for yourselves, Indeed, the latihan kejiwaan of Subud is not a latihan willed by the heart and mind and nafsu, but is of such a nature that we just only receive.
The enterprises we set up will require capital. We can manage to produce the manpower, but without tools and equipment we cannot meet our requirements. We cannot do it. Thus we have to be fully equipped; with skills, with manpower, with sufficient means. The means are money, that is, capital. Because of this, in establishing these enterprises we shall therefore need a storehouse, a place to keep money, what is nowadays called a bank, so that we can supply the enterprises that we shall be running. Thus we shall energize the work with capital that we ourselves have provided. And for what shall we use this capital? To supply our own needs, so that eventually, if this can be done, and if it receives God’s blessing, we shall be really very well off. Then wherever there is Subud, at the very least there will certainly be a latihan hall or a place for latihan, and a place to accommodate the members who come to visit that locality. This is what Bapak pictures, what Bapak envisions, that in all these things you will be satisfied, because in all these things there will be a sufficiency. So Bapak feels that this matter of the bank is a very important one, and he hopes that all of you will give it your attention, because the establishment of this bank is something both for yourselves and from yourselves.
As to the nature of this bank, if the strength of the bank that we are going to establish is only the money derived from the shares bought by the members, the most that could possibly be obtained by way of capital would be six million DM, or a little more. In that way it would not be possible to provide capital for the Subud members who will be running enterprises in the various countries, which number not less than seventy nine countries. But if it can be seen that this bank can do well, brothers and sisters, which means that what it does in every field receives the grace of God, so that it prospers, and also that it does everything in an honest and reliable way, which will mean that it will to a high degree possess the confidence of the general public, then it is not impossible that people who have a lot of money and who want to increase their money, will not hesitate to deposit their money in this bank of ours.
Thus the Subud bank, with a capital of say only six million DM, will possess, once it is running, no small omzet, no small turnover, but one of possibly more than a million DM. And with such a lot of money as that, we shall be able to circulate it into every corner; that is in the enterprises and projects of the Subud members, who will really benefit from this. For if this can be done, brothers and sisters, then the Subud Bank and all the enterprises will be able to provide places where the members themselves can work. For instance, they could run enterprises in the field of farming, which would at least be able to employ the Subud members in that field. If a school is opened, it can of course employ those Subud members or Subud helpers who possess a teaching diploma, so that they will be the teachers in the schools that are set up.
In this way the Association of the Spiritual Brotherhood of Subud will not, as at present, only be active in doing the latihan, every Tuesday and Thursday, or every Monday and Thursday. Not just that only. Eventually, if all these things can be done, the Subud members will have plenty of work in every field of human activity in this world. Who knows but that later on there will be Subud members owning factories. Not Subud, but Subud members. And the people who work in them will of course be Subud members and other people as well, so that it will not be just Subud members only.
If that can be done, of course the Subud members here in Japan will not be short of work. So there will always be work for the committee members to do, and there will also be work for the helpers. And their expenses can also be provided for the helpers themselves in carrying out their national or international functions; their expenses can be provided, for these helpers who are required to travel about and to go to this or that place, and who sometimes have to hold meetings with helpers from other countries. All these expenses can be covered out of the Subud funds obtained from the profits from the enterprises and from the bank which you are establishing. That is what you will experience, brothers and sisters, if God bestows His blessing upon you, so that eventually your situation will become a happy one both outwardly and inwardly.
That is all, brothers and sisters. Bapak will not make this explanation any longer. Perhaps you have already been able to grasp and to understand what will be the aims of the enterprises and of the bank we are establishing, and also what are the principles and aims of the latihan kejiwaan of Subud. Now Bapak hopes that you will pay good attention to Bapak’s proposals and to what he has just explained.
Now Bapak will see how many of you are going to increase your purchase of shares in our bank, the Sinar Kencana Mulia Bank. So Bapak would like the committee to prepare a table and chairs and to take a note of those of you who wish to buy shares and to increase the purchases you have already made. As to how to send the money out so that it can be used to buy shares, Bapak leaves that to you who know the ins and outs of finance in your own country.
Brothers and sisters, Bapak feels satisfaction when he hears that you have demonstrated your genuine concern and interest, so that the number of shares bought has now increased to five thousand, two hundred and eleven, more than twice what it was before. May God grant that we can set up our bank, our Subud bank, and may we really be able to succeed in providing adequately for our needs.
Bapak actually intended to say goodbye to you this evening and to thank you all for your sincere welcome and the good care you have taken of Bapak on his visit here, but because Bapak still needs to attend tomorrow’s meeting of your congress, Bapak will postpone his farewell until tomorrow afternoon. And because the congress meeting you are holding tomorrow is not in line with the agreed constitution of Subud, and is not as ordinary one., it will he best to call tomorrow’s congress Bapak’s congress. In that way there will be nothing to go against the regulations.
And now Bapak will end tonight’s meeting, and he wishes you good night and sleep well.
