Brothers and sisters, Bapak really understood to do some testing with you this evening, and then to talk afterwards. But since this place does not fulfill the necessary requirements, Bapak will have to give a talk only.
Brothers and sisters, you are already familiar with the latihan kejiwaan, but you have not yet witnessed it in the testing that Bapak does with you. But even so, you have still been able to draw some conclusions from the latihan you have done.
So in this connection Bapak needed to come here to give an adequate explanation, so that you will not misunderstand or fail to understand the link between the latihan kejiwaan of Subud and the enterprises and the bank that will be established later on, to which bank Bapak has given the name of Sinar Kencana Mulia ( Light of Most Excellent Gold ); the bank, that is, of the Spiritual Brotherhood of Subud throughout the world.
Of course, brothers and sisters, it is usual for people who worship, who are following some way of worshipping the One Almighty God, not to think any longer about worldly matters. That means that they no longer think about the requirements of life. This happens everywhere; in India, and Indonesia, and probably also in Europe and America. People who set out to worship God, or who practice the teachings of some school, then cut down all worldly pleasures. Many of them go so far as to refrain from marrying, and do not want to have a wife, and the women do not want to have a husband. This has always been the custom ever since the old days, and it continues up to the present.
With the appearance of this latihan kejiwaan of Subud, which really does show clearly that the guidance and direction of God are manifested in it, the intention is for man to practice his worship of the One Almighty God in all his actions and activities throughout his life in this world.
Indeed this is how it must be. As the messengers of God, the prophets, have said, it is not merely in the conditions that follow after death or in the world of the dead that God has power, but He has power and He knows, protects and cares for the existence of man right from the time when man is still living in this world. Thus man is intended to practice the worship of the One Almighty God both in this world and the next. That means to worship both inwardly and outwardly both during life here and also after death. This you have already seen for yourselves with the existence of this latihan kejiwaan of Subud.
Because of this, Bapak urgently suggests to you that you should always fulfill, put into practice and derive benefit from the latihan kejiwaan which you have received, by means of carrying on enterprises. An enterprise is an undertaking which you can carry on with the Jiwa, because an enterprise is work which you initiate and for which you make its way. And so the way this enterprise goes will of course not depart from the wishes of your jiwa. Thus you can practice the worship of the One Almighty God under ordinary conditions; under the conditions of your life in this world, in all you do.
In this way you will truly be able to benefit from the latihan kejiwaan. Do not let it happen as in the past; that you think that the latihan kejiwaan of Subud is a way or a work to increase your income, to gain promotion, to increase profits if you are a trader or to cure you if you are sick.
All of this is indeed important for all of you. You all very much need both your inner and your outer to be right in order for you to be happy and peaceful during your life in this world. That means that your life circumstances should be good and your jiwa should also be good, and not only yours but everybody' s. But do not forget that the most important thing in the latihan kejiwaan of Subud is the worship of God. Then everything else comes right as well , which means that those who have a job are promoted, those who are in trade increase their takings or their profits, the farmer will have abundant harvests; that is sure. But the important thing for all of you is the worship of the One Almighty God. For your worship of the One Almighty God is extremely restricted, only twice a week or, at the most every night, for example. This is nothing so far.
In fact your worship of God is not just for every evening only. Every movement and action and all that you do needs to be filled by your worship of the One Almighty God. Because if they are not they will be filled by the satanic forces, filled by nafsu, so that your worship twice a week or every evening in the week can be said to have no meaning. It is defeated by the pressure of the nafsu that enter your inner feeling all the time.
By practicing worship at every moment in all the actions and activities connected with the enterprises you carry on, it can be said that God's nearness to man and your nearness to the Power of the One Almighty God never ceases, or that it remains unbroken, so that worldly conditions and the conditions of the hereafter can be realized as being connected.
You are already able to know and understand that death is a certainty, something inevitable. You are all sure to die, sure to leave this world. Thus we have no need to fear the subject of death, to which we are actually drawing closer all through our lives. Your life and your death are thus near neighbors. If you can really be aware of this and accept it, then there is no death. What dies is your nafsu. Your jiwa remains alive; alive for ever. Such is the Will of the One Almighty God.
Your nearness to the power of the One Almighty God that envelops your selves both outwardly and inwardly causes your inner feeling to be able to perceive what it is like when the jiwa awakens and what it is like when the nafsu awaken. Thus when eventually the time comes for you to die, your understanding and your consciousness of life will become the consciousness and understanding of the life of your jiwa. So you will not feel strange in your death, because you have already begun beforehand to be trained in the way to understand, the way to be conscious of life with your jiwa.
Because of this, Bapak will therefore give you an example of how your legs, hands and other parts of you move when it is by your own volition, which means by the will of the nafsu, and how they move by the will of your jiwa. Up to now it has only gone as far as this stage for you; it has not yet penetrated further and further in. But Bapak will make a start even though it is external, even though it is from a low level, so that eventually it will go higher and higher, deeper and deeper, until it reaches the understanding.
Bapak takes as an example your feeling heart and your brain, which are generally employed by the nafsu for thinking about all the various affairs of this world; later on a time will come when your brain will be used by your jiwa, so that you will be able to know what life after death is like, and what your life was like before you came into this world. Thus, brothers and sisters, the most important thing for us in following and receiving the latihan kejiwaan of Subud is that we should really be aware of our life, so that we can know and give expression to all the things that are still hidden, and so that we are not the kind of people who just meekly follow along the same old way. Do not let us be people who believe in things we have not yet been able to witness in reality, so that they are really real, really true for us. The present time is no longer one at which we should believe in fairy stories. But we must believe in what is true, proved.
And now, with the establishment of enterprises, we are beginning to establish proof. You will begin to understand how the separation and coming together of your nafsu and physical body and your jiwa take place in everything you do. Bapak will test with you tomorrow, so that you may see how you can act because of the nafsu and how you can act because of the jiwa.
This testing is also so as to bring you satisfaction, so that members who have been doing the latihan kejiwaan for ten, eleven, twelve or thirteen years can feel the benefits of the latihan kejiwaan of Subud.
Up to now Bapak feels and sees that you have not yet been able to feel that. What you feel may even be something rather strange, such as that you are spiritually superior, so that you are near to the angels; near to the angels or near to God, so that you are near to heaven or possess heaven. There are even some people who say "I am on a higher level than A or R. All that is really only fantasy. It is not like that, brother and sisters. How high and how far you may be in the latihan kejiwaan is in the hands of the One Almighty God. You cannot make use of that for your requirements in life in this world. You are not going to get a spiritual diploma and then be able to work as the head of a department, for instance. No; nor is a spiritual diploma like a diploma in outer life.
Bapak will tell you a little about what he himself has experienced. On one occasion, at nine o'clock in the evening, Bapak felt very sleepy, as if he wanted to go to sleep and could not help going to sleep. Bapak felt very strange; his breathing began to get thinner and thinner and thinner. Bapak wondered why he was so sleepy, why did he want to sleep, why was his breathing becoming thin ? Was this the moment appointed for Bapak to die end to leave this world ? As he sat there, Bapak thought about all this. But then Bapak remembered that at the age of fifteen he had a had a kind of dream in which he was told that at the age of thirty-two he would be summoned by the One Almighty God. When Bapak remembered that he thought no more and no further, except surrender to God, thinking "Oh, this is the time for Bapak to die. So Bapak surrendered sincerely to the One Almighty God. Bapak went to his bed and there he prepared for death. But with Bapak’s sincere submission he did not die. No. Bapak felt as if his body were cut in two. The lower part was drawn towards the south; the upper part was drawn towards the north. Then Bapak felt that his southern extremity was very cold and he also felt his northern extremity very cold.
And Bapak asked in his heart “What does this mean?". Then the answer came "Your feet symbolize the South Pole and your head symbolizes the North Pole." That was why Bapak felt cold.
Then Bapak felt as if his chest were split in two. Then he was drawn out and began to spin. Bapak's body felt round; round like a ball. While he was spinning, Bapak asked "What does" this mean"? "This is the world. You will be set free of the world because you surround the world".
And then it was as if, not that he flew up into the heaven, but as if he were free of the world. If Bapak were to say he flew, it would be like a bird or a machine. He did not fly up into the heavens. Bapak was up in the air, far away from the earth. What did Bapak see there ? He saw a collection of stars. The answer came from within himself, "That is the universe; those are the planets with their suns".
Then the farther he went the smaller they became, so that Bapak saw the universe, which had formerly been scattered, as only a single point. Bapak asked in his heart “What does this mean?". "That is the universe; now you are here far away from it. And you will ascend higher".
Then Bapak was in condition of bright, clear light. It was much brighter than when Bapak was in this world. Bapak asked "What does this mean?" "This is what is called the first heaven". There Bapak saw beings. And the beings there were very, very big, and dressed all in white and then they draw near to Bapak. They bowed down before Bapak. "What does it mean that you are here?" "We all give praise to God and to Bapak Subuh. For Bapak has obtained grace from the One Almighty God. I pray that you may complete your journey to the One Almighty God". This is just what Bapak is telling you.
Thus it is clear, brothers and sisters, that if God bestows His grace upon you, you will receive the fruits of the latihan with clarity; not as when one dreams but more clearly than one ordinarily does in this world.
Bapak verified this after he came back from that place. Bapak came back from the journey at about twenty-five minutes past four. When he got back Bapak saw Bapak asleep. Bapak saw that there was a light there like the light of the morning star. Bapak approached the sleeping Bapak. Then Bapak kissed the sleeping Bapak. But the Bapak who kissed vanished, and the sleeping Bapak awoke. When he awoke, Bapak got up from his bed and looked at the clock in the study; it was exactly half past four. And, perhaps so as to be witness to Bapak's journey, Bapak's mother woke in the middle of the night. She wanted to go through to the back of the house, but she did not dare, because when she opened her eyes it was as if she were not in her room but up in the sky, up in the air. So then she went back to sleep. And Bapak's mother smelt a very beautiful fragrance. This was a proof. And his mother saw that the room was full of light, full of globes of light, like when Christians celebrate Christmas Day. This really did happen. Bapak is not lying, for Bapak cannot lie.
That, brothers and sisters, was like proof in the kejiwaan. And such a thing as that is not something that one can strive for or seek for by any means whatever, but it happens one hundred percent because of God; one hundred per cent by the grace of the One Almighty God.
If you remember, people were faced with very great difficulties just to get to the moon and they spent many dollars, more than a million dollars. That was just to the moon; not yet to the sun, not yet to the planets, nor yet to heaven, according to what Bapak experienced the first heaven lies beyond the universe, beyond the firmament. It is thus obvious, brothers and sisters, that we cannot dream about the kejiwaan in the same way that we dream about the things of this world.
The heart and mind keep on thinking about these things, although it is only making imaginary pictures of them. Although this cannot be done, people still want to make some picture of them. It is for that very reason that it is the will of God for you to undertake enterprises. The enterprises you undertake are what will later on provide you with evidence.
Let us say, for instance that before you received the latihan kejiwaan you were unable to make some material object. But after receiving the latihan kejiwaan you are able to make it. Because in fact it really is just as has been said by the messengers of God, by people who had received the Grace of God; all the more so when they were people with really quick brains, really intelligent, even though stupid people can become intelligent, if they receive the grace of God, and their brains can become acute and efficient. This is a proof.
You can take as an example what has been received by the prophets, such as Christ himself. Where did Christ obtain any learning? And if he obtained it, who taught him and where did he go to school? These matters are not mentioned, because in fact Christ did not go to any school, nor in fact did he have any teacher. It was the same with the other prophets, such as the prophet Muhammad. To what school did Muhammad go, and who was his teacher? He had none either, nor are they mentioned. Thus Muhammad himself did not go to school either. Why did the Prophet come to be someone really wise, really possessing a more than ordinary ability?
Also in the case of Christ; his ability was beyond the ordinary, more than that of other people, so that even up to the present millions of people still have faith in him, even though they have been to school.
That is how it is, brothers and sisters, and therefore if when you carry on enterprises you really do it with patience and always take care to receive guidance from God, so that what you do, is always overshadowed by the Power of God, then all the things that have been hidden from you will be revealed to you; you will know them all. That is how it is, brothers and sisters, and so Bapak suggests that you should undertake; enterprises. This is necessary that you may be able to know the benefits of this latihan kejiwaan of Subud.
Bapak will illustrate this with something simple that women are used doing, cooking that is. If when you are cooking food you receive guidance from God, then the food you cook will be different from the rest, both in flavor and in the good it does. It can be said that what you cook will not only taste good, but it will act like a medicine in a variety of troubles. Suppose that your husband is upset about something, his distress or agitation will disappear as soon as he eats the food you have cooked. If your husband has bad habits, for example, his bad behavior will cease when he eats the food you've cooked. In this way what you cook will form an effective cure, so that your husband will no longer enjoy eating out and staring at other women. Of course, it is alright for him to look at them, so long as he only looks, but his heart should not be looking at others. This is only one instance from among a great many.
For a man, if he is really able to run an enterprise that does not separate him from his worship of God, he will know what his real talent is, so that what ever he works at and whatever he does, people will readily notice it, because it will attract the attention of anyone who sees it. It is the same for what is in your self. Suppose that you have been doing the latihan kejiwaan for eleven or twelve years. Earlier, before you started to do the latihan kejiwaan, people liked you and you had close friends, but after doing the latihan kejiwaan for twelve years you may have lost your friends and people may even dislike you. What is the reason for that ?
It is clear that your kejiwaan is not yet properly developed. If it were properly developed, the reverse would certainly be happening. Anyone who saw you would feel affection for you. Anyone who came near you would feel happy. It would be like listening to a very sweet song very inward. Or like being near to something that shone brightly, for instance. But at present it is actually not like that; it is even the opposite. It is as if when you try to approach someone that person even goes away. What is the reason ? After all, you are reasonably well dressed. Why, when you approach someone, does that person turn away ? They feel bored, as it were; not alarmed, but they feel touchy, ill at ease.
Thus everything is already clear to your own selves. Someone may, for instance, claim "I am really already almost like the angels. When I eat, I eat with the angels. Why do my friends and acquaintances nevertheless dislike me now, more and more as time goes on?" Obviously what he says about being almost like an angel is not true. He is not close to the angels; he is close to the devils. That is why his friends and other people do not like him.
It is thus clear, brothers sisters, that the evidence of his own self will reveal the development of a person's jiwa. This is why it is stated that people who have received grace from the One Almighty God, people who have received the blessing of the One Almighty God, possess the four characteristics of sidih, amanat, tabligh and fatunah. Sidih means wisdom; to be wise but not through any learning. Amanat means that whatever its possessor says, whatever he tells people, will only produce happiness and satisfaction in those who hear it, and also they will grasp and follow all the instruction given in this way. Tabligh means to be a peace maker not just making peace between people who are quarrelling, but also making the household peaceful, with harmony between husband and wife, wife and husband. Thus it means making peace both inside the home and outside it, which means making peace between people who are quarrelling. Fattunah means honest, faithful and surrendered to the One Almighty God.
The most excellent kind of person has this kind of nature. So if you are not yet in harmony at home you cannot yet be called tabligh. That is only your own state that is not yet tabligh, let alone being able to pacify people who are quarrelling, whereas this is the nature people ought to possess, and such are those who obtain the blessing of God, who obtain grace.
So this, brothers and sisters, is an explanation about the development of the latihan kejiwaan, which makes it clear whether you really do receive grace from the One Almighty God. These, brothers and sisters, are the benefits and uses of the latihan kejiwaan of Subud which you constantly receive and follow.
Later on, by means of the enterprises you carry on, not only you will become accustomed to continue your worship of the One Almighty God without ceasing, so that you are always close to Him, but also the development of the enterprises you run will affect the situation of the Spiritual Brotherhood of Subud. Because the existence of these enterprises will automatically strengthen the finances of the Spiritual Brotherhood of Subud. And if its finances become strong, the Spiritual Brotherhood of Subud will be able to establish houses to serve as latihan premises in every center. Besides this, it will also be able to establish guest houses where visiting members can stay.
Apart from that, we shall also be able to put into practice the ideas formulated at the Subud World Congress for establishing hospitals, schools, homes for delinquent children and homes for old people who have no family. In this way we shall really be able to carry out our ideas as a body, as an associated brotherhood which really does perform an excellent service to the general public of this world.
Besides that we shall be able to direct the energies of our members; the helpers, that is. We can appoint those of our helpers who are qualified teachers to teach in those schools. Because the people teaching in the schools are helpers, who can to some greater or less extent test and know what the children’s talents are, we will be able to put those children on to whatever lines are right for them. And it will happen automatically that there will be no child who is unable to find happiness in its life in this world. For all the creatures of God that have been created in this world, even though they may be defective, can of course live, only they have not been directed into the right way.
Also, brothers and sisters, if we are able to establish hospitals, we can find a place for the energies of Subud itself; of the helpers that is who are qualified doctors, in this way these helper doctors can put into practice the results of the latihan, kejiwaan at the same time as they use the results that come from the science, the practice of medical theories that is. And the outcome will be that the people they treat will be cured in accordance with the advice given by our doctor helpers, so that they will be actively worshiping God together. And in this way we really can put what we have received from God to use for the benefit off mankind in general.
As to the enterprises that Bapak proposes, these are not enterprises to be run on your own, so that, for instance, A runs an enterprise on his own, B runs an enterprise on his own, C runs an enterprise on his own and so does D. You should not do it that way. You need to run enterprises jointly and to build up substantial concerns. That means enterprises that really are enterprises, like a P.T., a Perusahaan Terbatas ( Limited Company ). And to make it strong, such an enterprise should be constituted in the presence of a lawyer, so that it includes regulations to define all the responsibilities and requirements.
Amongst the regulations an article can be included laying down that so much per cent of the profits is to be contributed to the Spiritual Brotherhood of Subud. Thus the way you run the enterprise is united into a really democratic activity; you work together and go through both the bitter and the happy experiences together. It is a different matter if each of you acts alone, so that you are competing for your own needs, regardless of what your friends need. Because of this, Bapak tells you to organize the enterprises you establish in the way Bapak has said.
Because the enterprises you set up will be big ones, they will, of course, need capital. You need to think about that capital. It is true that since we do not have enough money we shall certainly need to obtain it from some other person or body, for instance. But the way to do it is to create something of such a kind that it will not ask for capital but will attract it because of the way it works. The kind of body known as a bank does in fact work in that way. Thus before we run any enterprise; it is very necessary to establish such a body, which has the power to provide capital for them; that is, to establish a bank. And Bapak has named this bank Sinar Kencana Mulia. Sinar means a light that envelops its surroundings. Kencana means gold, or something that shines like gold. According to traditional terminology the shine of gold is a light, a work that possesses dignity. Therefore a shining light, a golden appearance, symbolizes royalty. It means to have dignity. Mulia means high and wide and very good. And because this bank is set up by people who worship God, by you, that is, then of course in this case mulia means that we really can use material possessions or worldly wealth for the worship of God. That is a noble aim.
That is how it is brothers and sisters, and so Bapak hopes that the bank we are going to set up will become a body able to provide capita1 for the enterprises of Subud members. Bapak therefore hopes that you will really take it to heart, so that our Sinar Kencanan Mulia Bank can really be established during this year.
Will the Sinar Kencana Mulia Bank that we hope to have really be able to work ? Bapak feels that there is a good possibility for it to work. For our ideas are not ideas for making ourselves rich and pursuing worldly affairs and worldly possessions all the time. No; our ideas are ideas that arise from a feeling that is not influenced by nafsu, so that they will bring out really good actions that point the way to a human way of life, so that people's lives are no longer used as tools by the material forces. It will actually be the other way round, so that people can make use of the material forces.
This is in accordance with what we have received and with what the Spiritual Brotherhood of Subud has come to express in terms of "We, together with the whole universe, are created by God, so that it is clear that from the spiritual we become material. Our existence, the existence of all the material universe, derives from God". Because God exists, so that matter has come to exist and this world has come to exist, once we have come into this world we must not plunge still further in and never come back to God. We must not do that. But we intend, and God also intends us to be able to return to God, so that it is from spiritual to material and then from material to spiritual. In this way we can really make good use of what God has given to use our existence is from God and then we return to God for ever.
Brothers and sisters, it may well be that you know and understand more than Bapak does himself about the nature of banks and the way to run them. The bank we are going to set up will obtain it’s capital from you; from the Subud members all over the world, that is. This money that will be obtained from Subud members all over the world, is not likely to amount to more than two or three million dollars. It will not be more than that or at a the very most say ten million. Thus if we thought that the bank would procure the money for its capital only from you, then it could not possibly provide for the enterprises being carried on by the Subud members all over the world. For the Subud members all over the world will probably be running not less than a hundred enterprises. Put it at each country has two enterprises; then there are already twice fifty or one hundred enterprises. Thus if each country wants capital amounting to five million dollars, fifty times five million dollars will be needed; two hundred and fifty million dollars. So it would not be possible for this bank to provide this capital.
But, brothers and sisters, you will already know and understand this better than Bapak does himself. If our bank is really able to work, so that there are many successful enterprises, then the outside world will certainly not remain unmoved; they will certainly observe it.
And those who have money will not remain inactive; they will certainly be very anxious to add to the money they already possess. So therefore they will not be slow to make deposits in this Sinar Kencana Mulia Bank of ours. If this situation comes about, then it is not impossible that our Sinar Kencana Mulia Bank may possess a capital reckoned in not less than milliards of dollars. And under such conditions it will eventually be able to provide capital for the enterprises of all the Subud members.
That is how it is, brothers and sisters; therefore it is very necessary that we really should establish this bank, and it is very necessary that we should be cautious and take care that the people we appoint as organizers or managers to run this bank are really honest and good.
In this way the Sinar Kencana Mulia Bank will really become a Subud World Bank, so that it will become an example for the human race. If this Subud bank can be firmly established and can provide capital for the enterprises of all the members all over the world, then later on what we have done and what the bank has done, will be an example for all those who want to promote peace amongst the races of mankind in this world.
In other words, what we nave done in Subud will be from ourselves, from human beings, and for human beings. It will also be from our country and to our country. Thus it is not a situation in which country A sucks profits out of country B, country C sucks profits out of country D and so on. The situation will not be like that; all of us together will draw profits and all of us together will provide them, which means we all consume and we all supply.
And in this way we shall also prove that the harmony amongst you is not confined to spiritual matters only, but also applies to external matters, to physical matters. Thus in both body and jiwa, both inside and outside, we shall be harmonious.
When this has been achieved your situation will thus become an example to the world. And if the world is able to take example from us, it will become a peaceful world, so that it will be inhabited by one united human race that stands face to face with the One Almighty God and is consequently able to live in peace. And the world will become a place such as God hopes for it; it will become a place, that is, in which we worship the One Almighty God.
Because of that, Bapak therefore hopes that you will really take an interest in establishing this bank. Do not fail in this. Let the Sinar Kencana Mulia Bank, our Subud bank, really become established. And as each country has its own laws and regulations, Bapak leaves the way to accomplish this to your own discretion to choose the way to follow in order that our bank may be firmly established.
This that Bapak has just been telling you about began before he left on his journey. Before leaving, on his journey round the world, Bapak first went to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur no one in Singapore had bought any shares while in Kuala Lumpur barely twenty-five people had bought any. Then, after Bapak had been to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, the members in Singapore, where there are only twelve of them, had bought five hundred shares, and in Kuala Lumpur, where there are sixty members, they had bought a thousand shares.
After returning from Kuala Lumpur, Bapak went to Australia. Before he came to Australia the Australian member had bought seventeen hundred shares and after Bapak had been to Australia and gone on his way again, it was noted that the Australian members had bought five thousand shares. There was thus an increase of three thousand, three hundred shares. Then to New Zealand. Before Bapak came, only just five hundred shares had been bought there. Afterwards the number rose to two thousand, five hundred shares. From there he went to Japan. Before Bapak came to Japan only fifteen hundred shares had been bought then afterwards the number rose to five thousand.
From Japan, Bapak went no Canada. In Canada the figure was about one thousand five hundred shares. After Bapak left the figure was four thousand two hundred. From Canada Bapak came to America. Before he came to America the American members had bought only three thousand shares. Since Bapak cannot yet act here in the same way as he has done in other countries, he therefore leaves it to you. Supposing the three thousand shares bought here were to be multiplied by twenty, that would be splendid. Bapak therefore hopes, brothers and sisters, that you will not hold back. Then Bapak's dream that you had only bought three thousand shares will not come true. Bapak very much needs to travel about; bearing in mind that the bank will become a torch to give light to all the Subud members, it must not fail to be established. Because of that Bapak needs to travel about everywhere for a while so that he can really go round all the centers equally.
That is all, brothers and sisters, and Bapak brings this meeting to an end.
Thank you.
