Talk to men and women

Brothers and sisters, your congress is over and the time has come for the members of committees, especially the national Committee, to resign from their positions.

Speaking not as Chairman but merely as an elder who looks after the Subud members and who can also be said to lead and guide them in carrying out their worship of the One Almighty God, and who at the same time also guides, directs and encourages them in carrying on Subud enterprises, speaking in this capacity, Bapak thanks you very much. He also gives praise and thanks to the One Almighty God that the committee members, especially those on the national Committee and also the group committees, have carried out their appointed tasks. He also thanks the helpers, who are like advisers and assistants in arranging the conditions of the Subud members in an orderly manner, and who have really been able to carry out their functions and duties very well. May the actions taken by the committee members in the course or carrying out the duties and responsibilities entrusted to them become an example for the members to be appointed to the new National Committee.

Bapak is not going to say much, for what he is saying is not to praise you but merely to thank you very much for the loyal service you have given so abundantly to our spiritual association of Subud. Then Bapak will hand the meeting over to you and he hopes that the various sections who wish to present reports will do so, and will report to Bapak upon the outcome of the tasks laid upon you, so that perhaps Bapak can make a few amendments to the plans and arrangements drafted by the various sections.

Before Bapak hears the reports from the sections, who have drawn up a formulation of work to be done in the future as well as reporting on the work that has been done already, it is now necessary for Bapak to hear the nominations put forward for the election of the chairman, Vice chairman, first and second secretaries, first and second treasurers, or whoever it may be, and of the Komisaris. Bapak would like one of you, maybe Ruspono from the Dewan Kejiwaan, to put forward the nominations. P1ease come forward.

( Ruspono ) Most respected Bapak, for two consecutive days we of the national helpers dewan have been testing the proposed composition of the new committee, and we hope the teamwork has been good, all working together. We have finally arrived at a proposal or suggestion for the structure of the new committee as follows: ( list of name and offices ). Now we ask Bapak whether it is necessary to change anything in our conception of the structure of the new National Committee? If no changes are needed, we ask Bapak's blessing, that it may be able to work in the way we hope. Thank you.

( Bapak ) Although this is all right in Bapak's eyes, you must not just put the onus on Bapak and just leave it all to him in this way. Bapak's views agree with what you have formulated and what has just been arranged; that is, for Dr. Subardjo to be appointed as honorary Chairman and Professor Hazairin S.H. to be the adviser or consultant, he is at the moment in hospital, and Bapak hopes some of you will go and visit him.

Sutanto has once again been chosen as Chairman. Bapak feels he must be getting tired of it, but it is the general wish of all the members that Sutanto be elected Chairman. Not re-elected, elected. We can forget about the word re-elected. This is the Sutanto of 1973. But nevertheless, Bapak will not force this upon him. What if he is really tired? People do get tired, but if in spite of being tired he can face it and is willing to do it, he may. Bapak agrees to Sutanto being elected National Chairman. He is not being re-elected; simply elected. If he were re-elected he might then feel: "Oh, back again. I have been re-elected."

As Vice-Chairman we have Wahono S.H. Wahana, to be exact. Yes; Bapak also agrees to that. Is he new to it? He is not new? Yes; he has also sat on the National Committee, but not as Vice-Chairman. And the secretary is Junusi, who is at the moment still in Bandung.

But is he being informed, or what is happening? He has been sent for?

( Ruspono ) If Bapak says he should be fetched, we will do it.

( Bapak ) Yes, do that if possible, inform him, and let us hope that he will soon return from Bandung, from his training course. And who is to be the second secretary?

Sutopo? He is a new member, new to the committee, but he has been in Subud for a long time, hasn't he? Yes, I would like Sutopo to stand up, for people do not yet know him. Sutopo? Oh, he is not here? But he can be introduced. But Sutanto introduced everybody just now, didn't he? Not yet? Where is he? You want to see them, don't you? If not, and if it is not necessary to see them, all right. As rule one asks them to stand up so that people can see them. Otherwise how are they to know who is who later on? Yes; let the candidates stand up and show themselves.

Junusi, then; do you already know him? Not yet? The man is in Bandung; that will be difficult. Come and stand up here and face that way, not towards Bapak.

Now, here is Sutopo, whom the helpers dewan have selected to be the Deputy Secretary. How about it? Do you agree or not? Yes; alright.

And then, Sumekto has been chosen as Treasurer. He is a member from Medan who is very seldom seen here. I would like him to show himself, and you approve too? Elected! O.K? And as second treasurer Gutomo. This is also rather strange. Bapak would like him to show himself; please stand up. There he is; he has been a member for a long time, so that even though he may be a stranger to you he is not a stranger to Bapak.

Then as Komissris we have Bachtiar and Abas. Maybe Abas is not here; he may be at his office. Is he here? Not here? As for Bachtiar, you know him, don't you? Hey, Bachtiar! There he is, quite tall but not all that fat.

Then we have the chairman of S.E.S in the field of enterprises, which means the body of people who give advice and are like advisors to the members who will be running enterprises. But this one here is the chairman, brother Haryono. Here Bapak calls him brother, not son. In a meeting there is no father, no son. This is brother Haryono. He is a member who has only recently become familiar to you, because although he is Bapak's son, he has not been seen for a long time. Please stand up. He does not look like Bapak.

That is all, brothers and sisters, and Bapak agrees, but although from Bapak's point of view he agrees, he will still leave it to you. So you also agree with Bapak's opinion? Anyone who does not agree, stand up; those who do agree, remain seated. Well; everyone agrees. No one is standing up.

That is that, brothers and sisters, and Bapak thanks you very much for your hearty agreement. Bapak is not the Chairman, so he does not need to hold the gavel. Obviously, beginning from this moment, those of you who have just been named are sitting at the National Committee table, those of you whom Bapak has just mentioned and who have been elected. For you have only been elected, and so the Chairman, Sutanto, is not re-elected; no, he is newly elected at this moment, when Bapak hands over the gavel. Pease sit down again.

The gavel belongs to the one sitting there. I invite the newly elected committee members to come and sit here.

Now for the Komisaris. Abas is already here, so I will introduce him first, Abas, come forward. Where is Abas? 0h yes, so the one who is not yet here is Junusi. Has Bapak Subardjo not arrived yet? He has not.

Meanwhile S.E.S. have to present their formulation, which means sketching out how they will have to act and work. Please don't be too complicated, because if later on this gets too complicated and involved of course those of you who are not yet used to running an undertaking and standing on your own feet will not be able to follow it. Thus this simple formulation will be enough to guide you. Therefore Bapak agrees to what has been formulated. Then Bapak would ask the Chairman to give further reports.

( Chairman ) The second formulation to be reported to Y.M. Bapak and to the meeting is that from the Publications Section, and this will be represented by Subadi. Here I should explain to the meeting that Subadi was appointed by Bapak to be Councillor for four years. Thus he is in fact still automatically included in the Committee Komisaris, and so we invite him to come and sit here after he has presented his report, and sit next to Pak Haryono. Please.

( Bapak ) Bapak agrees to the arrangement explained by Subadi as Chairman of publications. 0nly Bapak refers to something he has just heard; that is, that there is a small book entitled Trikondo. It is not necessary to publish this, for it can be said that the contents of this book are not free from teachings, and so it does not originate from Subud or the latihan kejiwaan of Subud.

Bapak himself has indeed heard it said that what there is in Subud derives from some teaching. Bapak has often said that Bapak did, of course, at one time have teachers; not just one or two or three, but a great many. And the teachings Bapak received from them differed from one another.

Towards the end there came one named Kiyai Adburrachman. He was a Sufi teacher, and therefore both a teacher and a Moslem. He was said to have received his teaching from Sunan Ampel. Ampel lived near Surabaya, But almost all his teachings were advice or the kind called the tarech, whereas what Bapak has done in Subud, is not like that. It is a receiving. Thus what Bapak has given, and has given to you abundantly, is not a teaching but a receiving. To put this into ordinary language, it is revelation. Thus it does not come from teachers, but from the One Almighty God.

Bapak says this because the experiences Bapak has received, apart from what you yourselves have received, show that what we have in the latihan is nothing but receiving. Thus there are no illustrations such as are frequently given in the teachings, no instructions, for instance. Of course, brothers and sisters, each of you understands what Bapak means by instructions. There are instructions telling you to do like this, like this, like this, and all of that is really like lessons. Whereas in reality no one can give any lessons to anyone to show them where God is and what is the way to God. It is impossible. That is why these methods are banned. To be banned means to be declared wrong. Indeed, brothers and sisters, Bapak is obliged to make this explanation rather long, so as to get rid of anything that smells of instruction or smells of teaching, so that the latihan kejiwaan we now have is really pure. This is necessary so that you will not be turned aside or diverted, or vacillate in yourselves as to what is right and what is wrong. But if you truly follow the latihan kejiwaan of Subud, so that you are really able to feel and receive with full conviction, of course you will not be turned aside. It is thus clear, brothers and sisters, that the instruction given by a teacher shows whether or not that teacher is really close to God and able to receive the commandments of God, so that he can show other people the way to God and what God is like.

Religion tells us that no-one except God Himself, the One Almighty God, can know where God is or what is the road that leads to God. That is why Bapak often speaks about it. This time, it so happens, it is in the month of Syawal, at the end of the fast. Thus it is only by God that knowledge of the Divine is given to human beings; it is given according to the teachings of Islam and of every religion sent down by the will of God to bring knowledge to mankind, so that people will not depart from what the messengers of God have taught.

Thus the small book just mentioned should not be published, brothers and sisters, nor is it necessary to publish it, because it will cause dispute. You must not continue to go on in that way. There is even a picture in it of the gungung, what is called the Kayon, the mountain a wayang picture. Then there are other ideas. Subud has only begun to give way a little bit to the wishes of people who want to enter Islam, and now many voices say that Subud is Islam, or that Subud obliges people to enter Islam, whereas it is not like that. Subud is a body, a form, that can be composed of all the various races and also of all their various religions. Thus certainly the latihan kejiwaan of Subud is like their technique, their reality; it is the reality of the religions, the reality of faith and belief.

Thus those of you who believe in dewas and the existence of dewas, or in Buddha, will later on be able to receive the reality in the latihan. Also those of you who belong to the Islam religion will be able to receive the true meaning of the hakekat ibadat, which means the hakekat or true meaning of the faith and the fast and the zakat-fitroh ( alms giving ) and the haj.

Also members of the Christian religion will know the truth about the crucifixion, and it will be the same with other religions. Thus it is true that the latihan kejiwaan of Subud is the technique of these various faiths. That is why there should never be any intellectual doubts in Subud as to whether this or that is the way.

There must be none of this, for you who receive the latihan kejiwaan of Subud can prove it and witness it all for yourselves, Bapak has explained, as guidance in this latihan kejiwaan, that the only guide in this latihan is the power of God.

That is why Bapak always says that the Zat Tuhan, the power of the One Almighty God, is present outside as well as inside the human self. It is also present inside as well as outside the universe, it is therefore clear, brothers and sisters, that in our worship of the One Almighty God there must be no other guide except the One Almighty God. That is the reason why the latihan kejiwaan is aroused by the power of God when we have truly surrendered completely, and when our nafsu Bapak will therefore explain that a little more clearly. Perhaps Bapak can explain it more clearly later on, this evening, because it will take time. This present explanation is only about not publishing that little book.

That is all.

( Chairman ) The third formulation is for the Finance section, and will be presented by Bachtiar. Please come forward.

( Bapak ) Everything the Chairman of the Finance Section has formulated, brothers and sisters, is of course at present only an outline foreshadowing the donation and contributions we shall later be able to receive from the enterprises we set up, which at present are only ideas.

Let us hope, brothers and sisters, that the donations coming in from enterprises will be able to fill the coffers of our brotherhood, in that way we shall not in the future lay any great burden upon our members wish to read our publications. For as a rule, even though here they are not so very expensive, our members in the branches and groups feel the cost of the magazines we publish here is a heavy one, and it will be even heavier if the price goes up to Rp. 50. Fifty rupiah is a lot, brothers and sisters, even though it may be nothing for us here in Jakarta, where it costs Rp. 50 just to park a car. Yes, that is so in Jakarta, but in Demak or in Gombong, Rp. 50 will buy as much as Rp. 200 or Rp. 300 does here.

It is not the same as it is there, for a clerk's daily wages are less than Rp. 90, so that if he becomes a member of Subud it is hard on him.

This is why the members in the villages and outlying districts decided that it would be better to copy it by hand, just copy it. Yes, they have been writing it out by hand, late at night. If it is copied like that, there is nothing for the publication side. Thus the publication side is trying to give a hint to the finance section that funds should be collected as quickly as possible, so as to be able to snap its fingers at money, so as to be able to publish and produce as much as possible and to distribute to remote places as cheaply as possible, if possible, publications should be distributed free once the coffers are full. But they should not be free to people who can pay. It will not be necessary to give them to people like Prio there. People who have big caravans must pay. Have you seen it? Have you never seen that caravan? It is a house, that caravan. It belongs to Prio now. It is here and you can see it later. It can sleep a whole family. One could accommodate more than a family. That is all. Bapak would like the Chairman to go on.

( Chairman ) Members attending the congress, the fourth formulation is that of the Yayasen Section, which will be presented by Gutomo. Pease come forward.

( Bapak ) Bapak does not feel like making any comment, for this has not yet come to anything and we are still working on it. Let us therefore leave it at that for the present, and later on the paragraphs can be rearranged, Bapak therefore agrees to what Gutomo has formulated, Bapak leaves it to the Chairman to give the floor to another section.

( Chairman ) The last formulation is that of the organizational section which will be presented Wahono. Please come forward.

( Wahono ) Most respected Bapak, ladies and gentlemen of the national helpers' Dewan, and all those present: I have been given the task of leading the Organizational section in the section meeting held in the latihan hall on November 23rd. I will first report on the structure of the personnel; the meetings have been chaired by myself from the national committee, and Aaryono from Bandung is the secretary. Bapak has already approved all the members, Bapak has just made an alteration, so that the date for the next congress to be held two years from now has been put forward, so that afterwards we shall have material to contribute when we go to the International congress in Germany. That is all, thank you.

( Bapak ) Brothers and sisters, it is now my turn to speak. Bapak gives praise and thanks to the One Almighty God that we have been able to bring this year's congress of the Subud Brotherhood to a successful conclusion, and that it has produced the results for which we hoped.

Brothers and sisters, Bapak prays with all his body and soul, and he also urges you to join in praying that our brothers, who we have chosen to be the national committee of our Subud organization will receive the grace of the One Almighty God, so that they can always perform their tasks well, even better than before. And we hope the God will bless them so everything they do, or almost everything, will go smoothly and well so that all our hopes and plans can be accomplished, especially in the field of enterprises, which will later on form the backbone of our spiritual brotherhood. For the Subud brotherhood will not be able to stand firm simply by hoping for contributions to come in, nor carry out its ideas and ideals in the field of social work, while it is the field of social work that the counterpart to man’s worship of God certainly lies.

It is indeed the will of God for man to care not only for himself but also for his neighbors, his fellow beings. In this way, something will be created in human society that will be what the community hopes for and that will be the will of God. Thus our association will become peaceful and harmonious, prosperous and happy. So too will the prosperity and harmony of our association enable us to make a full contribution so that we will be able to contribute everything possible to our nation and our country.

This is our aim, brothers and sisters. It is the aim of the spiritual brotherhood of Susila Budhi Dharma that as well as worshiping God, we should revere our fellow beings. That means we organize ourselves and our race: we take part in organizing our race so that it will, at the least really become en example to society in general.

Brothers and sisters, it does not seem necessary at the present time for Bapak to go into the various things you are bound to need or to explain about them, but it will be better if Bapak speaks only briefly and ends his talk. For Bapak will also have to speak again this evening and so he will save his breath. So I will not make this talk any longer; it is enough. But it seems that you also wish to hear the reports on the enterprises we are running. Although we are not yet able to run them in earnest, yet I would like you to be told something about the sugar factory so that you fall in with Bapak’s wishes and do not just go on listening but also participate by buying shares so that later on you will also take part in tasting the sweetness of the sugar. You might regret it if Bapak were the only one to taste this sweetness. In this way not only Bapak and the other members who are running the enterprise will taste the sugar, but all of you equally will taste it. Bapak therefore hopes that all of you who have been following the process of setting up the sugar factory will be anxious to take part. At least you will be able to make candy.

Haryono, please, Haryono is the president so it will be clearer. Later on you can check with him. Just to tidy things up, those of us who sit on the board as founder members of this large undertaking are intending to issue two milliard in shares: two milliard rupiahs worth of shares for you to take up. This is why you will have to think ahead as to whether you want to want mortgage your house or anything like that, or think if there is anything you can sell: if you have a kris or something like that. We here do not have money: many of us just have material possessions, such as heirlooms, that could be sold at auction. In short, Bapak leaves it to you. Look into it carefully so that later on you can taste the sweetness that Subagyo has planted, Subagyo is the second President, the project manager.

Now, who will explain about this, Haryono or Subagyo? Yes, please; it must be clear, but you have to speak louder. There is still time brothers and sisters, there is still time.

And so brothers and sisters, Bapak says thank you. Subagyo has given an explanation that is automatically attractive to you and attracts your desire to really become shareholder to some extent in this great undertaking. What we are now experiencing is something that we have never experienced before. God willing, if we and all our race can become like this, and if our race that people of this country are strong, then our country is strong. If our country is strong then its people are also strong, our nation is strong. This is in accordance with plans of the government, for the government itself is building up in every field and we must and should help it, not just sit and listen to its voice but really take a part in the building and join in and make the country and nation of Indonesia one that is really well regarded in the world.

That is all brothers and sisters, the end of what Bapak wanted to say. But Bapak will be speaking again and he prays to the One Almighty God that you will always be protected, especially the committee members. With the protection of the One Almighty God may you always be able to steer our spiritual brotherhood of Subud well, even better than before. That is all.

Tonight is an extra brothers and sisters. It will begin at 8:30 pm. And now the chairman of the committee and of the meeting will close the meeting. You have just heard the gavel.
