Brothers and sisters, first of all Bapak would like to wish you good morning and to welcome you here. And also Bapak would like to introduce to you Dr. Rachman Mitchell who has been Bapak's doctor, who has come yesterday. So he is only Bapak's borrowed doctor, not his official doctor.
Now Bapak would like to continue giving explanations about the latihan kejiwaan and its connection with enterprises. And Bapak wants to explain this to you more fully so that you should not misunderstand, because enterprises are indeed something ordinary, an ordinary kind of work or an ordinary kind of effort in the field of commercial activity, such as people normally undertake. And it is necessary therefore for Bapak to explain it and make sure that you don't misunderstand, and don't get the idea that by doing enterprises you will somehow be delaying, retarding or interfering with your worship towards Almighty God.
So, it is clear, as Bapak explained yesterday, that the latihan kejiwaan is indeed a receiving, a receiving from the power of God Almighty which exists both within and without our being. What this means is that the power of God is within everything that is within us. It is within everything that is within our being. And it is outside of everything that is outside of us. Which means that, for example, if we are looking, the power of God exists within the inner center, within the inside of our eyes, and also it is on the outside of our seeing, so that both within and without our seeing, there is the power of God. So it is not possible for us to lose touch with the guidance of the power of God, providing we do not forget about it, and we do not intentionally push it aside. For if we forget about or intentionally put aside the latihan kejiwaan which we have practiced until now, it means that the closeness of the power of God which is within us will be covered up by the nafsu, by the nafsu which resides in our hearts and minds. So that we then lose touch with the power, the guidance which we receive from the power of God Almighty.
So it is clear that we cannot feel, we cannot become aware of the guidance of the power of God if we do not wish to do so. Or to put it another way, God will not help someone who does not wish to be helped by God Almighty. So it is clear that God also can only help someone if that someone makes an effort in his life. So God's help cannot he given to someone who does not like to make an effort in his life. So it is only possible for someone to achieve, to be able to look after his life in this world in an excellent way, if he or she is willing to make an effort in that direction. For God is not only willing to help man, but God has created man with all the necessary instruments and tools which he needs to live a complete and successful life in this world.
So if there is a man whose life in this world is retarded, is not well arranged, then that is not the fault of God, it is the fault of that person himself. So it is for example for this reason that you are required, and Bapak hopes that you will always make an effort, to come and attend the latihan with the group on the days which have been designated. In other words not every day, you don't have to come every day, but on the days of the week when it has been decided to have latihan that you will always try to come and attend. The need for this is that we should learn to be harmonious, that we should learn to join together and work together, that we should be able to make use and set up a place of latihan which we can use for a long time. And that the brotherhood of Subud shall stand strong and united. Because from the point of view of the latihan, it is perfectly all right to do the latihan at home alone. For this you do not need to go somewhere special because there is no place in the world which is empty of the power of God. So no matter where we are we can do the latihan. We can do it at home by ourselves. But the reason why it is necessary to come and do it together on the days which have been decided is so that our brotherhood can stand united and harmonious. So even if you cannot make it on every latihan night, yet Bapak hopes that you will make an effort to do so as often as possible.
Normally for man, as far as his relationship with God is concerned, this is limited to belief. Because indeed man's power towards God or man's ability to achieve something towards God is limited by his ability to believe. So man's power towards God does not go beyond that. Man has no ability beyond just his ability to believe in God Almighty. And this is the reason why in all the great religions, man is taught that all he has to do is simply to carry out the practice of the religion, to observe the practice of the religion, that is to do his worship according to the rules that are laid down for it, in other words what we call in Islam the shariat. But this belief in Almighty God which man is enjoined to maintain or to feel towards Almighty God is something that can very easily, without his being aware of it, be diverted towards the realm of the lower forces. So it becomes directed no longer towards God, but towards the realm of the material forces, of the vegetable forces, of the animal forces, and of the force of the ordinary human life.
And indeed, man cannot be blamed for this because if man were to abandon the material forces for example, he would be completely naked, he would have no way of clothing his body. Man would be unable to build himself a house without the material forces, nor would he be able to travel from place to place because he would be unable to make some form of material object which can take him there. And this ability or intelligence which man has to use the material forces is something he needs very much. Because man has been created weak, without the tools to survive in this world, in the way that for example, we see in the case of animals like the tiger who has been given sharp claws, or a bull or a cow that has been given strong horns with which it can overcome its prey. Man has nothing of that kind. Even a man can be overcome by a cat. If a cat is really angry, it can certainly make a man submit, because of its sharp claws and its ability to scratch him until he bleeds. So it is clear that among other creatures in this world, man is a weak creature. He has not been provided with all these things that animals have to protect themselves. But in man's case, man has been given something else by Almighty God, and that is his intelligence. And with this intelligence man is able to make for himself weapons whose power is far greater than the teeth of the tiger, or the horns of the bull. Man is able to make weapons which are far greater in power. For example, it may be that the tiger can kill another animal, but at the most, a tiger can perhaps kill two animals in one day. But with his weapons, man can destroy maybe up to a million people in one day. So it is clear that man's intelligence is something that is very powerful and something that man cannot live without in this world, even though it is for him a temptation and an obstacle in his wish to achieve peace and quietness and complete worship of God Almighty.
And it is because of this fact that God Almighty, in His wisdom, has given man another tool as well, in addition to his intelligence. God has given him something in addition to his intelligence which resides in the heart and mind. God has given him something else which exists within the heart and mind which is like a life, a life which exists there and which comes from the power of God Almighty. So it is clear that we in Subud are very fortunate, because in addition to our belief in Almighty God which we do with our heart and mind, we have been given something from the power of God which exists within our heart and mind. It is a life which exists in our heart and mind, and on the outside of our heart and mind, which we call the latihan kejiwaan.
So it is clear that we must use both the gifts that God has given us, both our heart and mind, that is our intelligence, and this life which we have received, which we feel in the latihan kejiwaan, which exists both within our being and outside our being.
Since centuries and millennia man has tried hard to find or to achieve something which we can call the contact with the power of God Almighty. And for this men have been accustomed to separate themselves from places which are crowded and to seek solitude away from every kind of influence and temptation.
And such people have been symbolized as being completely naked. And indeed it is true, that man can generally receive something from God, man can receive some contact from the power of God only if he is completely naked, which means that he does not think about anything at all, that he does not imagine anything at all, that he does not feel anything at all, except that he feels as though he were completely dead.
So indeed, it is true that this effort of man to find God by completely ridding himself of the nafsu and of every kind of temptation and link with this world, has gone on since the very earliest times that man existed, up till the present time.
And it is only now that, for the first time, we have received something from God Almighty, from God's power, which enables us to receive a contact with God's power, to receive an influence from God's power while we are still living in this world in the ordinary way and still thinking about ordinary things as people do. And maybe this is because, as Bapak said the other day, because God has felt it is time now that He gave man something whereby he can find the right way and not go too far in his forgetfulness of the power of God Almighty. So we must, as Bapak has told us, we must really give praise and thanks to the greatness of God Almighty that He has given us something which permits us to worship God Almighty while still acting in a normal way, while living in a normal way in this world.
Now there is something that Bapak has to tell you for you to consider. There are many kinds of groups of people who claim to worship God Almighty. And if you listen to what they say, it looks as though there is something similar to the latihan kejiwaan that we have received, because in what they call their worship, they also make all kinds of movements. And this exists in many places. For example, it is something that exists in Bali. It exists also in Java, in Bapak's own home country, and it is called there by a name "krisuruban". And it is something where people also experience a kind of movement when they are together. Well, this kind of teaching, this kind of group is actually only the manifestation of the lower forces which manifest within the people who are experiencing this movement. And you can see this for yourself if you observe carefully. For example if you have a material vessel, a material thing in which the content is not right for it, there is something wrong with it, its movement will be unbalanced, it will be chaotic. So similarly if you observe carefully these groups, these people who say they are worshiping God, their movements are something chaotic, something unbalanced. So, for example, at the time when they are in this kind of trance which they experience, you can see that their eyes move in a chaotic way, their bodies move in a chaotic way; and then if you will look at the result of what they finally experience as a result of this practice, it is generally a result which somehow is harmful to other people, in other words various kinds of magic and so on and so forth. So these things exist in many places. They exist in Africa, they exist in many, many countries, in all countries, let's say. And therefore it is necessary for us to be very cautious and careful in judging these things. Because indeed from the outside, it looks almost as if there are movements which resemble in some ways the latihan kejiwaan.
And this is why Bapak always advises you that when you do your latihan, you should not have any kind of thinking or imagining or have any preconception or any wish that you bring to your latihan. But simply surrender yourself utterly to the power of God Almighty and with a feeling only of patience, trust and submission. Because it is important to realize that what we have received is given by God Almighty, and God Almighty has existed before eyeing that existed and will exist at the end of everything that exists. So before this universe, the whole world, and we ourselves were in existence, God existed. And after the whole universe, and we ourselves, and everything ceases to exist, God will still exist. So in order to receive direct from God's power, we only need to surrender utterly to Almighty God, for all things have come and were created by God Almighty. So this is something for which there is a word in Islam. But even though there are words to describe it, it is not sure that many Muslims are aware of this or its true meaning. And that is the words, "inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rojiun", which means that we come from God and we return to God, that everything comes from God and everything returns to God.
And now what shall we do with our heart and mind which, after a11, is also a gift of God Almighty? Well, it is clear, as Bapak said earlier, that in addition to doing the latihan, and following the latihan, and receiving the fruits of the latihan, we must also work with our hearts and minds. And the field of the heart and mind is enterprises. The field of enterprise is simply the field of work, the field of ordinary work as people normally do in this world. But it is an activity which tends towards the welfare of the one who does it. In other words, it is an activity which tends towards the taking care of the security and happiness of our life in this world. So enterprises can comprise any field that you like. Any one who works, it can be called an enterprise. For example you can have, a teacher who teaches is undertaking an enterprise in the field of education. A doctor like Dr. Rachman is also doing an enterprise in the field of health. In addition to that you can have an enterprise in the field of agriculture. Maybe it is done by an agricultural engineer, or you might not be an engineer but still work in the field of agriculture. Similarly you can have an enterprise in the field of business and for that you maybe have a qualification of doctor of economics or maybe you have nothing of the kind, but you can still work in the field of business. You can have an enterprise in the field of fisheries, or any other field that you can imagine. What about the ladies? They can work in the field of hotels for example, or in the field of cooking, or in the field of making clothes. Again there are many, many fields where women can work and can be successful. So all these activities are fields for enterprises, enterprises whose aim is to fulfill the needs of our life on this earth, to ensure our lives are happy and prosperous and provide for our families what we need.
So it is clear that in our life we have two duties. One is to do the latihan kejiwaan and the other is to make some effort in this world with our hearts and minds which will take care of our life in this world and which will ensure that we are happy and fortunate and can stand on our own feet, both with regard to our life in the next world and with regard to our life in this world. So it is this that Bapak always advises us, that we should learn to stand on our own feet, to provide for the needs of our lives for ourselves. And secondly, by using our hearts and minds fully in the sphere of enterprises, they will not be tempted to address themselves to the problem of Almighty God and His power, something which for the heart and mind is very difficult for them to do, and not only is it difficult, but it's impossible. Because the power of God is within the heart and mind so they have no ability or possibility for comprehending that. And there is another benefit from these enterprises, in addition to the fact of taking care of our own lives and our own families. We know that because in this life we have so many needs and all these needs require money, so the benefit of the enterprises will also mean that Subud, the Subud brotherhood, can become stronger and more prosperous. For example, it is not possible for Bapak to come and visit you here if we do not pay for it with money. Similarly, for you to go somewhere for what you need, to provide the needs of our brotherhood, we always need money. And it is for this that we need to do enterprises also, that with our enterprises, with the profit that we make through our efforts, the Subud brotherhood can become strong, can become prosperous, and can achieve the ideals which it has set for itself in this world.
Brothers and sisters, it is clear therefore, that you need not worry that if you do enterprises this will in some way obstruct, delay or disturb the progress of your latihan kejiwaan. Such an idea, such a feeling is completely wrong, that somehow through doing the enterprises, through using your heart and mind in this world, it will obstruct the progress of your latihan. This will not happen, because the power of God has already divided within you these two spheres. Far from it, instead of doing enterprises obstructing or disturbing your worship of God Almighty, on the contrary it will give you a satisfaction, the satisfaction of self sufficiency both in your outer life and in your inner life. And it is from this feeling of self sufficiency that we come to what is taught by both Subud and all religions, and that is the wish to do charitable things, the wish towards charity or helping other people. For indeed, this is the wish not only of Subud but of all religions who teach that men should help each other, that men should be willing to give to those who are weak, to help those who happen to be sick, and to assist those who need assistance. And this generally is connected in religion with the fasting, the month of fasting that is carried out. So this was the reason why at the International Congress, Bapak urged all Subud members to undertake enterprises as quickly as possible, that enterprises should be developed as quickly as possible so that we can soon put into practice our wish to start charitable undertakings; such as for example, schools, clinics, homes for old people who have no family to look after them, homes and schools for children who are perhaps handicapped in some way, hospitals, and all these other sorts of undertakings which can put into practice our ideal of serving our fellow men, of helping those who need help, and of giving charity where it is needed in this world. And of setting up special enterprises to help those of our own members who have not yet been able to find a field of work in their lives.
In addition to helping the people they are designed to help, such undertakings will also assist our several nations or governments, so that when these efforts, when these undertakings are beginning to bear fruit, it will be clear that Subud is something that assists the governments of the countries where we exist to solve their problems in these fields. So that thereafter the field of Subud will be open for the worship of God, so that no matter how Subud wants to proceed in order to worship God in the way that we do in the latihan, no door will be closed to us, and we will be given a side field for all our activities by the governments concerned of each of our countries who recognize the benefit of what Subud does.
So that is the content of Bapak's talk to you this morning, and Bapak hopes that you are able to receive it with open hearts and that you will be able to put it into practice. Therefore, Bapak prays to Almighty God that God may grant and help you to carry out Bapak's advice thoroughly. Finally, Bapak will now end his talk at this point, and will continue tonight, as yesterday, to do with you latihan and testing so that you may receive more than before, and if possible, to feel satisfied once Bapak has finished.
That's all, thank you very much.
