Talk To Men And Women

Brothers and Sisters,

Bapak gives praise to the greatness of God that He has given His grace to Bapak enabling him to come here once again and visit you – and to visit your place here which Bapak hasn't visited for a long time.

Also Bapak says a very big 'Thank you' to all of you, especially to the committee and to all who have welcomed Bapak and his party here and have provided them with a place that is sufficient and satisfying; and to all of you who have not neglected the closeness of your feeling to Bapak and his party, and who have given your attention to Bapak's visit here, and to tonight to the talk that he is going to give.

Bapak prays that God Almighty will grant that Bapak may be able to say something tonight which will enable you to receive an opening out of your feelings, whereby things which before were dark can become clear, and to bring you closer to the excellent way which you all wish to follow. Brothers and Sisters, Bapak has frequently in the past given explanations about the nature of the Latihan Kejiwaan and yet Bapak will repeat it once again because although his explanation is the same, yet it is also different - it's different every time, commensurate with your own progress in your latihan or within yourselves.

Bapak has already told you many times that this Latihan Kejiwaan that we have received is truly the guidance of the power of God Almighty which has been given to us - all of us - at this time in a form that is truly in harmony and in accordance with the time in which we live. That is, a time in which our power of thought has progressed tremendously to the extent that we are able to make all sorts of impressive and awesome things for our life in this world, and indeed that is God's will. It is God's will that we should do so because it is for this that God has given us a heart and a mind, to be able to use them to the full in this world.

If you look at the tiger, God has given the tiger sharp claws and sharp teeth with which, first of all, to defend himself against danger and, secondly, to serve as tools whereby to find his livelihood, that is to attack and to devour the flesh of other animals. This is clear from the nature of the instruments which God has given him. We cannot expect a tiger to feed himself like a cow - that is, by eating grass or something like that - because we can see from the nature of his claws and his teeth that that is not what he was made for. He cannot use his teeth which are sharp, to eat grass like, for example, a cow. So when a tiger uses his claws and his teeth to attack other animals, this is not a sign of ferocity or something like that - he is simply carrying out God's decree for how he must find his livelihood. So if people say that the tiger is wrong to do this or is doing something very wrong, or is very, very fierce - those who say that are wrong, because the proof lies in the tools that he has been given by Almighty God; that is, his teeth and his claws.

It's different if we look at a cow or a bull or a buffalo who have been given teeth which are smooth and continuous, which are very suitable for eating grass; and the cow and the buffalo have also been given horns to defend themselves against attacks by other animals.

So each has been given his own way of protecting himself and finding his livelihood.

Now in the case of man it is different, because man has not been given claws, or a special kind of teeth, or something like that. Man has been given a brain, the ability to think and an intelligence, and it is God's will that man should use these powers, these instruments, these tools, in order to protect himself in this world from all dangers that might befall him; and also to find his livelihood and to arrange anything that needs to be arranged in this world in order to organize society to his needs. This is indeed the purpose and the decree of God for man and, therefore, it is completely right if man uses these tools, for example, to build a beautiful house and to surround it with a beautiful fence - that is something completely right. For a man to make very nice and comfortable and good-looking clothes - that is completely right because that is what he has been given his intelligence for. People who say that that is wrong, or people who mould their lives in a different way - for example, people who only wear the same kind of clothes all their life - or people who are unable to build houses and therefore live in caves . . . these people are actually completely wrong because they do not use what God has given them in order to protect themselves and to find their livelihood in this world.

In addition to the heart and the mind, or the intelligence, that God has given to man, God has given him something else as well - and that is something that God has implanted in man to protect him from the influence of his own actions, or by being influenced by the things he himself has made. For example, it is God's will that man should make a house to live in, which is as good as possible. In other words, a place to protect him from the sun, from the rain, from the sleet, from the cold like you have it up here in Scotland, and all the dangers which might befall him from being attacked by wild animals and so on. But not for that house, that beautiful house he had made, to then become a way of keeping other people out. Or, similarly, it is completely right that man should use his intelligence to make beautiful clothes - those which look good, which feel comfortable, which sparkle or anything like that - but not that those clothes should then become a means whereby he can feel superior and make others, who are not able to have clothes as good, feel ashamed.

It is clear that man can be influenced by the things he makes in a way that is not God's will.

Similarly, it is completely right that man should make tools that will protect him from danger. For example, man learnt to protect himself from wild animals by making sharp swords and later guns, and later cannons, and later this and that, until finally he made a very powerful weapon such as nuclear weapons and so on, because indeed this is completely right; it is absolutely God's will and decree that man should be capable of doing something which is greater and more powerful than animals can do. But while a tiger maybe can kill one or two animals a day, a man has no bounds to what he can do. Man is capable of killing millions of other people in one day, and this is not the will of God. In other words, God has given man all his equipment to live in this world, to make this world as good as possible, and to develop all sorts of beautiful and powerful things - but not to use these to fight among themselves, to fight himself with his fellow men.

This was not God's will and not God's intention in the way He created man. It was God's will and God's decree that man should use his intelligence and his ability to think and to feel, to fashion things in this world akin to God himself. In other words, God's will for man or God's decree about man's nature, is patterned in a way on God Himself, because it's God's will that man should be able to take something and to change its form, and to make it into something that did not exist before. It is God's will that man should be able to take earth and change it and form it into plates and cups and all sorts of china and so on that he needs. And it's also God's will that man with his intelligence should be able to take earth and, by the science of separation or chemistry, be able to extract from it gold and iron and steel and nickel and so on. So with all these things that he is able to do, man is able to fashion weapons and tools of all sorts and kinds - and this is something that is really God's will for man, that he should really use his powers and his equipment that God has given him for making all the things that he needs in this world.

But now, even though this is the case, and man has been given this power and this capacity by Almighty God, nevertheless there are still among human beings people who do not want to use their heart and mind, people who do not want to work, people whom one can reasonably describe as lazy. This is not something new or something old, it's something perennial - it's part of man, that man really has two natures. Man has a nature which is diligent and wants to work, and wants to use the heart and mind - and another nature that is lazy. The result of these two natures of man is that always living together there are people who like to work hard and there are people who are lazy. And this situation always gives rise to a separation - that is, that those people who are lazy and who do not like to work are in various ways driven out by those who do like to work and like to work hard, so that they move away. They migrate to places where they are not disturbed by ail these people working hard, and when they get to that place a further separation takes place; that is, there are those who are really lazy and really don't work at all, and those who used to be lazy but now start to work hard. So again there is another separation.

This, actually, has the result that there are places in the world where there are human beings who have no culture at all - like, for example, if you go to what is called in the West, West New Guinea. There are still people living there who do not wear clothes at all, let alone have any ability to till the soil or to do anything of that kind - they simply exist in the jungle. Do not imagine that these people are something new, that they are somehow people who got made later on and therefore haven't sort of caught up with the rest of humanity. On the contrary, they are descended from the same people as you and Bapak are descended from - they are descended all from the original man who was first created by God. That is, from mankind as it originally existed. So all these people - they are descended from the same people as us. But they belong to the people who separated out because they were lazy, because they didn't want to work, whereas we are descended from people who like to use their heart and mind and like to work hard. If you watch, if you observe how people like this live - they, in fact, are satisfied as long as they have had something to eat.

For example, if they go out in the morning and they succeed in catching a fish and eat it, then they are satisfied. After that they just go to sleep because there's nothing more to do. In other words, they do not want, they do not like, to use their heart and mind to develop anything or to make anything. So the result is that gradually the heart and mind become blunt - in other words, they can't work, they're useless. People like this, people in that state - this quality is handed down from generation to generation until there develops a new quality, which is that they no longer have faith in God Almighty: they just have faith in anything that is around them which they are frightened of. For example, near where they live is a big cave with a dark mouth - and so they are scared. When they look at it, they feel scared. Then they make up ail sorts of fantasies about them, so that in this cave there lives some great demon which looks like a man, only it has eyes as big as kettle drums and has teeth - about this long, and so on. Actually, what they do is they make a story to scare themselves, so that gradually they are not only lazy but they are scared; they gradually become people who are too frightened to do anything at all. In other words, they are frightened of themselves. They are frightened of their own actions - and this is the nature of the descendants of people who have got used to avoiding the use of their intelligence and their heart and mind which God gave them.

It is different in our case because we have descended from people who liked to work hard and developed a culture. Don't imagine, then, that somehow there are different kinds of humanity and that God made some people and then, later on, made some new people who are therefore backward and haven't had time to catch up. Actually, all mankind was created about the same time all over the earth. In history - if we read history - maybe the history of man only goes back 50,000 years. But if you ask Bapak, what Bapak has received, or according to the knowledge of the jiwa, actually Bapak knows that man has existed in this world for about 3,000,000 or 4,000,000 years - and Bapak knows this because also this earth undergoes a change about every 7,000,000 years. So this again is something that Bapak knows only from his receiving. But nowadays scientists are beginning to discover that this is indeed the case. In fact, it was long, before Bapak read about these things in newspapers or magazines, Bapak had received that what are now the North and South Poles were previously on the Equator, and what are now East and West were once the North and South Poles. Bapak knows very well that under the ice cap of the North and South Poles - if you were able to excavate and dig down - you would find coal; and coal, as you know, is something that is an indication that before in that area there was thick jungle - maybe layers and layers of it. It is clear, then, that the world is not static but is always changing; and man, actually, has lived on this earth for a very, very long time.

Now these ages - how can we know about them if it is not from the jiwa? Because there cannot be any trace of such knowledge in history; if you write on paper, the paper will rot in a few hundred years. Even if you write on steel - if you leave it out in the weather, after so many thousands of years it will turn to dust. So the only way that man can know about the history of the world - and his own story - is from his own jiwa. Who is it who can witness, who is it who can decree, and who is it who can witness the beginning and end of every age? It is only the power of God Almighty which exists before every beginning and is present after every ending. And how is it possible for man to know about God Almighty? How is it possible for Bapak to say that the power of God Almighty exists and precedes all beginnings and ends all endings? How can we know about the existence of God Almighty? Only because God Almighty wills that we should know about Him.

This is the proof that, actually, God Almighty wills that man should know, man should be aware of Who has created him. So this is a picture of human history.

Bapak now wants to go back to talk about the kejiwaan, because besides man's brain and man's ability to think, and man's heart and man's intelligence, God has given him something else. God has given man something which provides him with a signpost, or a guidepost, within him -and that is a movement, or a vibration of life, which exists within his being and which arises spontaneously without his awareness and without his knowledge whence it comes. This vibration of life is something that you have experienced when you receive the Latihan Kejiwaan, because you certainly have said to yourself when you first felt the action of the latihan: 'How can it be that inside me there is something, there is a movement, that I was not aware of before?' It is this movement, this power, this vibration which is known in Islam as the qadar ilham. Qadar means movement or vibration, and ilham means the Gift or the Revelation of God Almighty. This is what God has given to man in order that man has a guidepost or a sign within him, and this vibration then is something that we have received within ourselves. We are very, very fortunate because this is actually what all men are looking for, because men have made tremendous progress with their heart and mind so that they understand many things about the world. Then they come up to a blank wall, and they say to themselves: 'Where is this power of God? How can we be sure who has created the world? Where is God? How can we know his nature, how can we sense and feel the reality of God's power?'

Nowadays men do not believe something that is not logical. Nowadays men cannot accept any more just on belief - men need to know something that can really be known, can really be sensed, can really be felt. And that is why we are extremely lucky, because we have received the reality, we have received this reality within us. But the other people still grope for it with their minds. The whole of mankind is looking for this, they want to know: how can we sense the reality of the power of God? Because the heart and mind is impatient, they decide: 'Let us try to feel it by putting away all other influences.' So they go away from society and away from all the disturbances which we encounter every day - all the noise and all the bustle and so on. And they go maybe to the top of a mountain or a cave or the seaside where it's very, very lonely, and they don't wear a complete suit of clothes - on the contrary, they probably wear something that is quite unsuitable for clothing a human being. They do all this to try thereby to receive, or to sense, the power of God; that is, the qadar ilham. This is, actually, a complete waste of energy or a waste of time because this qadar ilham is something that we can only receive if it is God's will, if it is God's gift to us. That is why Bapak says that we are extremely fortunate because we have, at this time, been able to receive this power: and it is something that is really suitable and is really in parallel, or in accordance, with the conditions of mankind in this world now.

Bapak will in a few moments continue his explanations about the kejiwaan, but before that Bapak would like to give you some evidence, or show you something, of the reality of what Bapak has been saying. Bapak will do a little testing maybe with somebody who has been doing the latihan for a very long time and has therefore been able to receive quite a lot already. Now Bapak will choose and hopes that she will be able to receive.

( Testing )

So it's clear, and it's in fact the case, that a million years ago one can say that Europe as we know it now nearly didn't exist; and instead of Europe that is here now, there was a large continent lying to the south of Europe as it is now, and taking up the area of something more than is now the Mediterranean Sea. This is something that shows that the world is constantly changing; and this is something that maybe scientists are not yet able to find the clues for - because science is only something new, relatively new, and is only something that uses the heart and mind. But with the jiwa it's possible for us to receive and to know many, many things about this world. For example, Bapak knew long before people went to the moon what the moon really looked like. It is true that for us, from here, looking at the moon, it's something very, very beautiful, but Bapak knew and had received that actually the moon, when you get up close, is not beautiful at all, and it's no different from rocks or earth which we have here. So in the old days when we used to say to a young woman we admired that: 'You are as beautiful as the new moon' - that is no longer appropriate because we have seen that the moon is not all that nice. Further than that, long before Bapak read in the newspapers and magazines about the recent discoveries of science, Bapak knew and had seen that beyond this sun which we can see - the sun which we see every day rise and set - there are many, many suns which are greater and more powerful than this one; and that, in fact, outside our own universe there are suns which are far greater, far brighter and far hotter than this sun which we know. All this is something that we can know through our jiwa.

Also, Bapak knows very well that underneath the sea, both in the Mediterranean and in the Atlantic, there are cities and traces of old civilizations which are proof of the fact that mankind existed long, long ago - in times about which we have no history at all. In those days maybe men were much more intelligent, much more powerful and much more able to do things than they are now. So how come? Why have we lost all that? Where have all the traces of those civilizations gone? They have disappeared because of the changes of the earth that Bapak talked about, the constant changes that take place on the surface of the earth. We know very well the impermanence of our own nature. You know perfectly well that if you have a very big gun - a huge cannon, or something like that -and it goes off and you happen to be standing near it, a person can get such a shock that he forgets everything, or his whole nature changes from that.

So how much more from the natural upheavals that take place when the crust of the earth changes. Actually, you do not suspect it because we are not aware of it and we do not hear it, but if you were able to hear the sound of the earth going around the sun - that is, of the world going round every 365 days and then spinning about its axis - this sound would not only wipe you clean but would completely annihilate you. You would completely disappear if you were face to face with that. So it is clear that when these changes take place on the surface of the earth, everything is wiped clean like a slate, and nothing is left of what has been before. But how then can we know it? We can know it because the jiwa is unaffected by the heat of the sun and by the cold of the rain; the jiwa is permanent and is in no way affected by anything that exists in this world. And it is this jiwa which can be in contact with, and know, both past and future and everything that exists in the universe.

It is clear, Brothers and Sisters, that the power of God, the nature of God, is something that we cannot possibly think about, because the scope of our thinking is not able to know God, since our thinking and everything that we have is created by Him. We can only be aware of God's power if it is God's will to grant us that awareness. All these things that Bapak has told you - this is something that we can only know through the progress and the development of our jiwa which ultimately can encompass all life, not only in this world but to the ends of the universe. But Bapak warns you that this is simply something that Bapak is telling you, and you should forget about it, because this is nothing that you can think about because your thinking is something that cannot grasp and cannot reach to these sort of things. What you must use your thinking for is something that your thinking is capable of holding on to, of encompassing - that is, your needs in this world, the things you need to do in order to live, in order to meet the needs of your life in this world. That is, what it is right for you and necessary for you to use your intelligence and your mind for.

It is clear that besides the heart and mind which man has been given for his needs in this world, God has also given man a power, a vibration of life within him, to be his guide both in this world and the next. In addition to that, man has been given a framework of life forces that are his assistants for his life in this world, and these life forces exist within man's being - or, Bapak prefers to say, exist within his life, because if Bapak says within his being then you will go home and start to look for where they are. Within man's life there is a life force of the material, of the material power. Now this is something that Bapak has already explained to you in the past, and maybe some of you have already heard Bapak explain about these life forces, but Bapak feels that it's still necessary to explain it again from time to time because, first of all, there are people among you who have not heard it before. Now, in fact, is the time for you to begin to understand this. Maybe you have thought to yourself sometimes: 'Why is it that Bapak only now is telling us about the lower forces, about the material forces and the vegetable forces and so on? Why didn't Bapak tell us right at the beginning, when we first joined Subud?' Well, Brothers and Sisters, the reason is that now is the time for it - now you are ready for it. At that time it was not yet the time; It is like when a child goes to school; when a child gets into the kindergarten, you don't immediately start teaching it what you learn in high school or at university - and at that time you were still in the kindergarten. Now Bapak can say we are now in the primary school, so it is time for Bapak to give us deeper and wider explanations because we need to begin to understand.

So within the being of man, within the life of man, there is the power of the material forces, the material life forces. The material life force is something which, when it comes into contact with the mind, when it cooperates with or gets close to the mind, is able through the mind to create and build and make things that we need in this world. As Bapak described earlier, it's able to make a house like this building, clothes, and all the other things Bapak mentioned earlier on. This is then the result and the symptom of the working of the material life force; and, therefore, it is clear that the material life force is something that is a sine qua non, is an essential for our life. To be able to experience happiness, satisfaction and a sufficiency and peace of mind in this life, we need to have the material life forces within us. But some people, realizing our dependence on the material life forces, feel the need to separate themselves from these material life forces - they would like to be free of their influence. So they are the people who, then - as Bapak described earlier - go off, they try to leave all the influences of the material world; that is, they put aside their social responsibility. They go far, far away, where there is nobody. They take off all their clothes and so on. But this is something that is completely a waste of time, because within them there is still the material life force. It is clear that it is God's will that man should make use of the material life force in order to be able to live in this world - and the one who uses the material life force in this world is the mind of man. This is indeed the time for man to use the material forces and to think.

Therefore these people whom Bapak has described - which you have seen yourself, people who in the modern world feel they want to go back -they want to go back to how man was at the very beginning, so they go off to an island somewhere, and they live without any clothes, and live just as it comes. Actually, this is completely wrong, because God's will for man now is that man should think and have a powerful mind; that it is God's will at this time that man should create all the things which we see around us, including the things nobody would have thought possible fifty years ago. Who would have imagined a few years ago that man would be able to create a vehicle which you can get into here in London and be in New York in four hours' time - this thing we call the Concorde and so on, and all the other things. All this that man has been able to do with his heart and mind is the will of God. These are God's decrees for man; and if man goes on, Bapak knows and can say for sure that man can achieve knowledge and power that will be quite great in maybe 100 or 200 years' time.

But the problem is that man, when he achieves all this, when he has become clever at using his mind, he forgets that it is the power of God which guides him, and he begins to have the feeling that it is his own power, and his own intelligence, and his own achievement, which is in front of him. It is because of this that things turn round and man is then cornered by his own achievements. It is really like in the fairy tale, When the weapon overpowers its own master. So we have the reality and the evidence of the world today. Who is not afraid today of what will happen in the world? So many people can see clearly the mass of powerful weapons, of nuclear bombs, and this and that, that have been piled up by countries - all of whom want to be the greatest, the best, the most successful, the most respected and so on. And from this fear and this worry, people are saying that all these weapons should be destroyed. Brothers and Sisters, it is quite impossible to destroy them. Think to yourself: when you have a little thing, a little possession, that is completely insignificant and someone tells you to throw it away - you feel sorry. How much more when it is something that has been made with the utmost of your energy and of your wealth - these weapons. Who is going to throw them away? It is sure that they will not be destroyed, and it is sure that they will be used because man does not like to make something which he does not use. Ło it is man himself who has already predicted - and already his thinking has gone so far as to visualize what will happen when these things that have been made are used - that there will be left maybe one-third of all mankind.

This is the atmosphere we live in today, that man is brought face-to-face with his own actions. That is why Bapak advises us, and always reminds us without end, to continue and to do diligently the Latihan Kejiwaan, because this is our signpost and our guide, and the power which God has given us to be able to go through this. And as for this Latihan Kejiwaan - is it not something that we can only do on Mondays and Thursdays, or Sundays and Fridays, or whenever it is? No because the Latihan Kejiwaan is something that is within us all the time, during the day and at night - whatever we are doing; it is something that can be within us, and we can feel and follow in everything that we do -whether we are walking, whether we are writing, whatever we do. This is the power of God which envelops us inwardly and outwardly. So it is clear that this is there all the time.

This is why Bapak always advises us to do enterprises, because an enterprise is the training ground where we can feel the guidance of the power of God - we can learn to feel the guidance of the power of God in our everyday life. So that the one who in his office has to write, he will be guided in his writing; and the one who in his office has to build buildings, he will be guided in his designing and in his making of the buildings. So that while we are working, while we are doing our work in our everyday life, we are not forgetful and we do not neglect and forget about the worship of God Almighty, which then accompanies us in everything that we do, and is always with us. This is the reason why Bapak always advises us to work in enterprises - so that we can begin to experience this guidance in our everyday life.

This is why Bapak wants you to do your latihan diligently, because if later this latihan spreads to people who are in authority - that is, people who, for example, have the authority over the arsenals of all these powerful weapons and have the power to use them or not, they will not forget, they will remember their human nature. They will remember and they will not use these weapons. So it is very important that we should do our latihan diligently because it is really the will of Almighty God that man should live in harmony in this world, that this world should become a place of peace, a place where men can worship God, and a place where men can truly live with a lot of happiness and joy. For this God can change man's heart. God can change the nature of man's inner feeling so as to be harmonious and to be aware of the needs of other people and other sectors of society. This is why in religions there is always the rule or the injunction to do social work, because it is God's will that through doing social work men will be reminded to be aware of the needs of their fellow human beings; and thereby, gradually, learn to take into account other people, learn to care for other people, so that people come together and can live in harmony and in peace and in security, and form a society which is really peaceful and really secure.

If you ask Bapak: 'Is it really possible? Is such a thing possible in this world?', then Bapak only says: 'Look at your own experience since you have done the Latihan Kejiwaan.'

Before you were opened, you quarreled not with people of other nations but just with your wife or with your husband. You quarreled all the time. And with your neighbor, you often felt angry and often you had a feeling of greed, or a feeling of being offended, and so on. Now you don't - maybe just a little. Anyway, much less. So this is enough of a proof or evidence for you that through this Latihan Kejiwaan, if it can spread, if it can spread to those who are rich and forget the poor, to those who are intelligent and take advantage of those who are not, to those who are powerful and oppress the weak - they will be reminded so that they will, of themselves, learn to be responsible for the needs of others, so that this world can really begin to become a place such as God wills. This, then, is the real proof of the Latihan Kejiwaan - that through this latihan we learn to live together in harmony, and we learn to be able to be at peace with one another and to live together harmoniously in society.

( Sharif: In case there is anything I have left out in my translation, you shouldn't feel worried about it, or upset, because it's all on the tape and, later on, you will be able to know everything that Bapak says because all Bapak's words are recorded. )

In addition to the material forces, there are also within us the forces of vegetable life; and, again, these forces are things that we need for the completeness of our life in this world. It is through the vegetable forces that we are enabled to eat and absorb all sorts and forms of plant life which supply our body with their substance - that is, bones, flesh, blood and nerves and so on, and our senses, so that this whole structure of our physical body is nourished by vegetable life. Now, again there are people who - because they want to purify themselves of everything that is an extraneous influence, because they want to know and thirst for things of the unseen world, or they want to know all sorts of strange experiences or unusual knowledge - force themselves to reduce their food, or maybe to go somewhere and say that they will only eat if someone puts some food in front of them. There are even those who refrain from food altogether. The effect of this is, of course, to reduce the ability of the human senses to work. You can experience this very well, especially if you refrain from food completely; but even if you reduce your food, you can be aware that your power to see declines; your power to smell, your power to hear, your power to feel, your power to think or imagine - all these things start to decline and to atrophy. This is, therefore, the effect of reducing your dependence on vegetable food. And this is, of course, all wrong, because God has given us all this in order to have a complete life in this world. God has created our whole being with the vegetable forces in it and around us, with all the vegetables that we can eat - the fruit trees bearing fruit and so on - for the purpose of man' s complete life in this world.

In addition to the vegetable forces, there are the animal forces which, again, man needs in order to be able to be given a force, or a strength, to be able to use all his physical body and his members and his senses. It is this that gives him the strength to work and to do something; and, again, there are people who say that man should refrain from animal foods. Man should refrain from them and maybe just live on vegetables. But again, this is something completely wrong because they imagine that through that man will achieve a kind of peace, or peace of mind. But the opposite is true - that it is precisely those people who are not at peace, because man cannot become peaceful, man cannot reach a peace within himself, unless he is guided by the power of God Almighty. This is what we have received in the Latihan Kejiwaan - the guidance of the power of God Almighty. All we can do to follow it, is to surrender completely to God Almighty. Once we have the guidance of the power of God within us, there is nothing more we can do, because everything is in the hands of God Almighty. All we can do in following God's guidance is to surrender completely with patience, trust and submission to His power, Who will then lead us, both in this life and the next, in the direction of what we need. Can you pick up one of those glasses there - one of the drinks, not just the glass. Now just put it down.

Receive.

Now you, as a doctor, Leonora - receive now. Supposing that drink is something that is not beneficial for man, but harmful. In other words, instead of making him stronger, it kills man. How will it be - will you be able to drink it or not? Will you be able to pick it up? Do you like to touch it or not? Now just try, just to see. Try and pick it up. See if it's possible for you to pick it up - just to be sure - so that the others can also see ( laughter ).

Now if that drink happens to be good for you, and happens to have a healing effect - how will you be? How many years have you been in Subud?

Answer: 'Seventeen'.

Brothers and Sisters, in case you want to know, Leonora has been doing the latihan for about 17 years, but many of you, because you have not yet received like she has, will doubt what Bapak will tell you. But the fact is that she did once find a medicine which could cure cancer and, at that time when she was developing this, she found that she had about a 70 per cent cure for the people she treated with this medicine. And the reason she was able to find this, and to make it, was because whenever she was working on her medicines and whenever she was making her pills and so on, and doing her research, she always quieted herself and was always attentive to the guidance of the power of God. But what is interesting is that although she had these very spectacular results of cures with her treatment at that time, the doctors she was working with did not accept her form of medication because it did not arise from something that was written down in the medical textbooks. So it seems that nowadays doctors will only accept something that has been arrived at in an ordinary way, even if it doesn't work. It is very much to be hoped that as time goes on this Latihan Kejiwaan will spread among doctors, so that in their work they will become perhaps less commercial than they are now, and their work will take on more of a social nature rather than purely commercial, as it is now. Actually Bapak would like very much for Leonora to give a bit of a talk, or say a few words, to the audience about this.

Bapak has said that if we really do the latihan - then if we, for example, are training as a singer, we will, through the latihan, be able to receive a voice which will surprise ourselves when we utter it, because it will be something completely different from any sound that we have been able to make before.

If we happen to be an architect, in our planning, or in our work, we will be able to find forms of buildings which are not only strong and durable but also very beautiful to look at.

For example, if we happen to be a lawyer, we will also receive guidance whereby we will be able to understand the secrets or the difficulties that exist within a case, so that we will always know the right way or the solution to whatever is in front of us.

This is something that Bapak is able to say because Bapak has experienced it himself. Bapak gets every day a large number of letters - and probably if it was one of you answering them it might take you a week, or maybe a month. But Bapak usually finishes answering his letters in maybe one or two hours, and it doesn't feel difficult or heavy for Bapak to do this work. Well, in fact, it's Bapak's work to do this.

Further, above the animal forces, there also exists within us the human force, or the force of the jasmaniah, and it is clear that human beings do not eat each other. Even if they did, that would no longer be the influence of the human forces - it would still be the animal forces, because then they would be consuming each other, as animals do. The origin of the influence of the human forces upon mankind is, in the case of a man, from the being of a woman; and in the case of a woman, from the being of a man. In other words, the influence of the human forces is something that comes in marriage between a husband and a wife; that is, their mutual influence on each other. It is clear that it is through marriage, then, that man can experience the completeness of the human forces. But although marriage of man and woman can be regarded as something important for the completeness of human life - that the wife can be regarded by her husband as a true life partner and companion for his life - nevertheless, she is also a great bother or a great temptation or a great disturbance for his life, and vice versa.

Before, when a man was single, he could do anything he liked. He could go anywhere he wanted, and he didn't have to consult anybody. But once he is married, he has always to take his wife into account, and his wife can overturn all his plans. And vice versa. The wife has to take her husband into account. So it is truly a burden for man - and yet it is something also that is the completion of man's life, because through the action of the human forces between the husband and wife, there can be formed a new being who is called a child, and this child will exhibit the natures of the two parents; that is, the characteristics of the two parents. This shows, then, the power of the human forces - that they are able to create a new being which is a reflection of the two parents. And the child born from parents who are truly harmonious in their marriage, who are truly peaceful in their lives and who are never far from the worship of God, will be a child whose character is described in Islam as a child who will truly give help and assistance and be an example to anyone who needs it, who will always be an asset to society, and who will always be a joy to his parents, raising them up both outwardly and inwardly spiritually in a direction of a complete life and a cleanness of the inner feeling. Such is a child that all people always hope for as a result of their marriage.

Finally, when you have been able to receive the nature of all the lower forces you will gradually come to a point where, thanks to the guidance of the power of God within you, you will be able to separate them one from the other, so that at that point no longer will they cause an obstacle for you, or overwhelm you in your life, but, on the contrary, you will be able to have power over them, because you will always be accompanied by something that is a protection - that is, the power of God which protects you from their influences, and enables you to arrange them, and to order them, so that they no longer form an obstacle in your life in this world.

So, Brothers and Sisters, although there is still a lot more that Bapak wants to tell you, Bapak feels that it's enough for tonight. Bapak will go on the day after tomorrow, with more explanations after your latihan and the testing that you will do then - but for tonight, although probably some of you feel that what Bapak has told you is not enough, that you would like to hear more, yet please remember that Bapak has been talking for more than two and a half hours and you should feel some compassion for Bapak as he is already an old man ( laughter ).

Bapak will stop here and, therefore, will wish you now for the time being - Good night, good rest and a good journey home from here. Thank you.
