The History Of Life

Before giving you a talk, brothers and sisters, Bapak first greets you and bids you good morning.

Bapak has watched your latihan, brothers and sisters, and it seems that many of you have made progress. Only Bapak says that it is not easy to understand and be aware with the mind of the content of the latihan kejiwaan which you have experienced and practiced. But it is easy to do this with a calm inner-feeling which is peaceful and aware, together with patience, trust and sincerity. That is really how it is, brothers and sisters, and that is why there is no inner or esoteric teaching in religion, whether in Christianity or in Islam, but only worship, so that there are always many people who keep asking whether there is really any content in religion. People are told that they should worship according to the rules indicated by the messengers, the prophets, but there is no instruction such as there is in a school or university. Nothing is taught about how to go from this to this, this to this, and how this leads to that and that to this.

What is the reason for this? It is because God is not of the same kind as human beings. God is the Creator Who has created all beings, both in this world and beyond it. How could it be possible for the human beings whom He has created to surpass so great and powerful a Creator, or for them to be able to know what He is and where He is? It is not possible. For God is not just greatness and power only, but His Being envelops the whole universe, with all its contents, including mankind. You are truly close to God, closer than to your seeing, closer than to your hearing, closer than to your thinking. Thus it is clear, brothers and sisters, that God and His power are truly present in the innermost of the innermost and beyond all that is outermost. That is why you must therefore surrender. Indeed that is the condition laid down by the prophets ever since the prophets Abraham, Moses, Jesus and the others. Muhammad only surrendered to God. That is a receiving, what is called grace, revelation.

That does not make things difficult for human beings, brothers and sisters; it does not make it difficult for you, but the reverse. On the contrary, it actually makes things easier; it makes the way easier for you to receive guidance and direction from the One Almighty God, Whose power is present both inside and outside the selves of all of you. That is the reason, brothers and sisters, why Bapak always urges all of you really to persevere and really to surrender to the One Almighty God. God is omniscient, brothers and sisters, and God is All-wise. God created you and, of course, He loves you. When, in your own case, someone creates something, of course he loves what he has created. When you make something, do you make something you will hate, and do you dislike what you have made? No, and if anyone disparages or criticizes what you have made, you feel upset about it.

It is thus obvious that human beings, who have been created by the One Almighty God, are accompanied by His love and by the help they need from Him. This is a matter of history, brothers and sisters, which means the history of life. Bapak has never read any books about that history, so why does Bapak talk about it? This is because he is speaking from his own experience, brothers and sisters. It is because of their own experience, brothers and sisters, that human beings can create such professional titles as those of doctor, engineer and so on. It is because of human experience that this world can be such as it is. You can all receive that experience because the One Almighty God has created your equipment for experience. What is this equipment for experience? It is the whole of you, from your skin and flesh and hair up to your thinking, up to your awareness of your jiwa. Thus people are enabled to receive this and that, so that they are said to have made splendid and amazing discoveries, as in the case of the people who discovered atomic and nuclear power and invented powerful weapons and so on. Why can they do that? It is because the receiving apparatus in human beings was created by God. That is why people should not say that the cleverness they acquire or learn is because of their own brains. No; it is because of the One Almighty God. That is how it really is, brothers and sisters.

Now Bapak wants to tell you a little about the history of life. History relates, brothers and sisters, that the first human being was called Adam. 'Adam' means the original, the first. Adam was accompanied by Eve or Hawa ( Arabic for Eve ). 'Hawa' means the air, the atmosphere. In reality Hawa means this world. Thus Adam was accompanied by this world, so that Adam was formed in human shape. But, in fact, at the time when Adam was not yet called Adam he was still in his original stage and he was already in existence. He had everything, of every kind. He had everything and he could do everything. This was life. The One Almighty God was there. Then, when Adam was sent down to earth, he would not have been able to live on earth unless he had been accompanied by an auxiliary equipment and a receiving apparatus to awaken him into life in this world; that is, by the mind and heart or, in short, by the nafsu. Thus if he had had no nafsu, he would not have been able to develop his life in this world. It is thus clear, brothers and sisters, that although people are always told to keep away from the nafsu, and not to use the nafsu, yet if you do not use the nafsu, you will not be able to worship God. That is really true, but you must not take it in the wrong way. With the nafsu, you can live in this world. Without the nafsu, you cannot live in this world. Thus it is misunderstood to be not for this world, but to be used in this world so as not to be in this world. It is taken in the wrong way.

What did Adam know of life before he, the being called Adam, was sent down into this world? If one talks about awareness of life, he could see, he could smell, but not with a nose; taste, but not with a mouth; also speak without a mouth and think without a brain. That was Adam before he was sent down to earth. After he was sent down, then Adam began to think.

Supposing you ask why God needed to create human beings, and why were they created and given nafsu, so that they forgot about the One Almighty God - that is a test given to human beings, so that you can feel the difference between the One Who makes the laws and those who obey them; the difference between God and man. In Javanese that is expressed as the difference between Gusti ( the Lord God ) and kawula ( the creature ). Thus the nafsu are like a line of demarcation, a partition between this world and the hereafter; the boundary line between kawula and Gusti, between man and God. That is how it appears if one looks at it from the human side. From the side of God there are no boundaries. That is why He is not a God Who exists only in the hereafter and Whom human beings can meet with only after death. God is present in this world too. Thus there are not two parts but one whole.

After Adam was sent down to earth, he was given these nafsu, together with the life-forces that caused him to have this and that, just as a table has legs, for instance; everything that the Dutch call samenstellung, and which in English is called equipment, so that Adam could behave as a creature and work and to provide for his life so long as he lived in this world. That is the reason why one must not neglect or abandon the nafsu. That is why it is forbidden in religion to practice asceticism for the purpose of worshipping God. It is forbidden to cut down food or to cut down sleep to any extraordinary degree. That is forbidden. In short, it is forbidden to do anything injurious to oneself. But people still go on wanting to do this. They want to do it in order to get closer to God or to find a way to God, whereas that is not possible, brothers and sisters, if human beings were able to find the way to God, that would be the end of this world. Why is that? Human beings have nafsu. The nafsu are necessary to human beings for making and for doing the things needed for human life, and what is needed for human life is sometimes used for one's own selfish needs. It is like the tale of King Pharaoh. Because he did not believe in God, he said that he himself was a god, so that he killed people as a matter of course. He set them to fight against one another or against wild animals, while he looked on and just laughed.

That is a picture of the nafsu. The nafsu are ignorant. Yes, that does not matter if they belong to people who really understand what is right, but for people who still have a strong desire to get something, their nafsu are like poison for them. They must beware lest they hurt their own selves. Nowadays this is becoming obvious, brothers and sisters. People nowadays are terrified and haunted by the things which they themselves have made. There is no country, no individual or nation, that does not fear the atom bomb. There is no country, no individual or nation, that does not fear nuclear weapons, although these things are of their own making. Well, this is what in Indonesia is expressed by saying that finally man will invent the weapon which devours its master. The weapon devouring the master means that the very thing that one has made turns upon oneself.

This is how it is, brothers and sisters, and it is therefore fortunate for mankind and fortunate for all of you that you are able to receive something which is like the way it was for Adam before he was sent down to earth: that is, the life that exists within life, brothers and sisters, and which in the language of religion is called the Holy Spirit, the Roh ul Kudus, the Roh Ilofi. But it is not easy for human beings to receive it so long as they are not yet truly surrendered to God, and even for someone who does surrender, by day and by night and at every moment, it is still not certain that he will receive it. That is why you must not waste what you receive each time that you receive the latihan kejiwaan of Subud. Bapak does not say that this is better or bigger, more perfect or more true, than other things; no. In fact, this does indeed exist elsewhere. Thus the latihan kejiwaan of Subud came into existence together with the human race; it is what in the language of Islam is called the khatir ilharn, the vibration of life. But if Bapak talks about the khatir ilham, this is sometimes misunderstood, for as a rule experts in the tarekh - do you know what experts in the tarekh are? They are the Sufis - these people locate everything inside themselves, so that they say that God is in the physical hearts of human beings; God is in their hearts. It is, in fact, a sin for people to say that. God is not like that. He has no location, no home, no dwelling-place; He belongs to no era, He has no race, no language, but He includes the whole. Why should He be in the human heart, when hospitals display preserved human hearts in bottles? It would be a pity if God were there. That is wrong.

That is why there are, therefore, no secrets in our Spiritual Brotherhood of Subud, brothers and sisters. Everything is open, for nothing is concealed. One thing that is kept very secret in this world is the union of man and woman. That is the secret of life, brothers and sisters. Although this is so, people can feel the need to discover it, to seek it out. Men look for a woman to marry, and that is the secret of life, since for whoever can feel his true state in this union, this is the same as understanding life, because it is from this union that you came. If that is where you came from, why do you not know it? What is the reason? It is because you are covered over by the nafsu. Thus you marry not in order to be able to feel and know the secret of life, but for pleasure, to seek enjoyment. This is how it is.

This is how it is, not that Bapak blames you for it; no. That is already how people generally are. Bapak himself also did that. All this will be revealed later on. It will be revealed in the latihan kejiwaan if and when, by the grace and mercy of the One Almighty God, you are really able to receive. This is why Bapak really does hope that you will surrender to God and to the power of the One Almighty God with patience, trust and sincerity.

Brothers and sisters, Bapak feels that it is important to give you a certain amount of explanation about what Bapak has just said about how the secret of life lies in the union between men and women. Of course, brothers and sisters, people do not generally think that it is there that the way lies; that the way for people to be able to know what life is lies there. But because they are impelled by the nafsu, which only want to feel something more than or different from what they ordinarily feel, that nature of the nafsu spoils their own way of life. And this is in spite of the fact that God continually gives a reminder to human beings, in that from the union of man and woman a child is born. The birth of a child is, in fact, really instructive to the parents. Why does a new-born baby cry? And why does a newborn baby sometimes wear a happy expression on its face, and why does it sometimes look frightened; why does it sometimes look satisfied and sometimes look as if there were many things frightening it? What is the reason for this? It is because a newborn baby is still linked with the spiritual world and is still living in the spiritual world, so that it knows more about that and is closer to that life before its eyes begin to open on to this world. Thus God has given a reminder to human beings, so that a newly born child is an example of what it is necessary to look for. It is not something that comes through striving and study, not something that comes because it is sought, but it comes suddenly and unexpectedly.

That is why those who study the various teachings try to cast out the nafsu and to escape from them, so as to come to the borders of nothingness. Nothingness means being without nafsu. When one is nothing, it is just then that one is. But how can anyone do that? How can we human beings do that so long as we still breathe and so long as we can still feel how our inner-feeling is? For the nafsu which people hope to reduce to nothing, brothers and sisters, are still present there in that nothingness. That is why many of these people, who have been unable to obtain the grace and mercy of the One Almighty God, lose their way in confusion, so that they end up worshipping the nafsu instead of worshipping God; that is, in what are called spiritualism, hypnotism and samadi or meditation. This is not the danger, but that is what happens when people do not really surrender to the One Almighty God. It means that only God can give the way and only God can give the truth. This is why religion requires people first and foremost to believe in the existence of the One Almighty God. In Islam they say: 'Ashadu anla ilaha ilallah, wa ashadu anna Muhammadar rasulullah' - 'There is no God but Allah to be worshipped and believed in, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.' That is how it is, brothers and sisters.

Let us go back to what Bapak said just now, brothers and sisters. In your case you have been fortunate in that in this present era and at this present moment human beings in this world have been able to receive something miraculous; that is, the ilham or revelation of life which you receive in the latihan kejiwaan.

If you really think about it, brothers and sisters, when you are receiving the latihan kejiwaan, you suddenly find your voice saying 'Allah, Allah', whereas this is not intentional and you had no intention of saying it. While this is something that people are used to saying, as a rule people who have not yet been able to receive the latihan kejiwaan of Subud say 'Allah' from their own understanding, because it is the custom, whereas you yourselves are not accustomed to saying that. It is not the wish of your heart to say 'Allah', but you are obliged to say it; you want to say 'God', but you say 'Al-Al-Al-Allah'. Just think about it. Who is doing that? That is why Bapak always says that people who have faith in God and who are truly mindful of the One Almighty God can receive something beyond their expectation and beyond their minds. This is indeed what people are seeking, brothers and sisters.

Clearly then, brothers and sisters, the latihan kejiwaan which you receive and practice is truly guidance and direction from the power of God, which is present both inside and outside our selves, and God really has compassion upon the human beings whom He has created. That is why there is no need for you to doubt or to question whether this latihan could disappear or cease to exist. No, brothers and sisters, the latihan will not disappear from your inner-selves, even when you die, unless you are wrapped up in and covered over by the nafsu. It is your nafsu that cover it up and shut it off, and it is the power of God that uncovers it and opens it. If you think back to the time when you were opened, you only needed to believe in God and to follow what the helpers said. If at that moment you were fortunate, you felt a vibration within you, so that without your own volition or intention you felt something alive in your selves.

How about the helpers, brothers and sisters? Bapak also needs to remind them not to feel that it is they who open people. No. They are only like a channel. That is why Bapak hopes that when the helpers open someone who wishes to enter Subud they will never be wrapped up in the nafsu, the nafsu of 'I can do it, I am clever, I am a helper'. You must not be like that. You, too, must surrender to God, praying that God may bless the person in front of you, so that he or she can receive the grace and mercy of the One Almighty God. In this way neither the opener nor the person being opened will be influenced by the nafsu, and what they receive will be pure. That is Bapak's message to all the helpers, for there are probably many helpers among you here. And if the helpers themselves can really always be aware of what is normal for them, they will be able, not to guide people but to act as intermediaries, so that the person who has just become a Subud member will be led in the right direction, towards true righteousness, so that there will be no criticism of each other among Subud members, and no divisions of opinion, because all that is useless. For when opinions are divided, people snatch at power and cleverness, but this actually darkens your selves, so that you can receive nothing that is true and nothing of what human beings should possess for their needs in life. That is the core and the kernel of the latihan kejiwaan, brothers and sisters, and it is really necessary for the helpers to be really aware of the meaning, the benefits and the usefulness of the latihan kejiwaan of Subud.

Brothers and sisters, it is usually said in religion that a small child or a baby is beloved of God. This is said both in Christianity and in Islam, as well as in other religions. It is clear that a baby or a young child is said to be still very close to the power of God which is seated within its self. Indeed this is a true saying, brothers and sisters, but as a rule one cannot verify it, for by the time the baby can see the shapes of this world, can hear the sounds of this world, can smell the scents and taste the food of this world, and even before it is able to think, it has already begun to lose the closeness between its feeling and its jiwa, and the closeness of its jiwa to God. The bigger the baby grows, the closer it becomes to this world. Its thoughts are also like that, and its brain and its mind become able to think about worldly matters, as happens when a child begins to go to school and learns its lessons. It begins to go further and further away from the kejiwaan, far, far away from the power of God which is enthroned within, so that eventually, brothers and sisters, when it becomes an adolescent or a young adult, it puts more trust in what can be seen or heard, or in what can be heard on the radio, than in the One Almighty God. That is why people cannot be blamed if many of them say that there is no God, for they are already closer to this world than they are to the One Almighty God, and further away from their jiwa and their God. The more extensive their learning, the further away they are from their jiwa. Thus the so-called spiritual knowledge that is taught in schools is not true spiritual knowledge; it is the spiritual knowledge of the mind, a mental knowledge of the jiwa, which people can think about and observe.

Because of that, the way for these people to learn about the nature and characteristics of others is through question and answer. But it is not like that for us. Bapak has always tested this with you when you are really able to receive the latihan. You relax, and then Bapak asks what are the characteristics of, for instance, the Germans. He asks that, for instance, and at once you receive. What, in general, are the characteristics of the English? What, in general, are the characteristics of the Javanese? What, in general, are the characteristics of the Chinese? Bapak has always tested these things with you, and indeed it seems to be like an intermezzo, a little entertainment for you. But, in fact, this is the hakekat, the true reality of spiritual life. This is the content of the latihan kejiwaan of Subud, so that you can know the nature of other people. You go up and up and up until you reach what is called the angelic level, when you will be able to know and to feel what the nature of the angels is really like.

It is said to be the angels who punish sinners. How are the angels towards you, for instance? H'm...!

How are the angels towards Bapak Muhammad-Subuh? ... What is the reason for that? God has granted the grace to Bapak Muhammad-Subuh to be able to plumb the depths of angelic life.

Now again, brothers and sisters, how is it among those who can plumb these depths? ... So instead of beating you, the angels actually greet you and welcome you. 'How are things going in the world?' they ask.

If you are English, and they ask what other news is there from the world, you can tell them how busy and crowded it is in London, but that in the middle of all that you always persevere in your worship of God. 'Very good', says the angel, 'that is where your place is, there in what is called heaven.'

It is different for the people who will be punished. When they are questioned about their experience in this world, and if it is an English person, for instance, the answer may be: 'Oh yes, I play a lot of music, beautiful music, and there are various kinds of entertainments. Yes, there is ballet and there are beauty shows.' The angel hits him. 'Your place is over there, in hell.'

Bapak has already done some testing with you. So Bapak uncovers the secrets of life. Why does Bapak do this? It is not because Bapak himself dares to do it, but because God authorizes Bapak to dare, so that the secrets of life shall not be hidden. People are afraid of God; but it is not necessary to be afraid of God. What is necessary is to do the best you possibly can. You must not be afraid of God, but of your own wrong actions. That is the test you must pass in order to become first-class human beings, perfect human beings who are recognized by the angels.

Assalamu alaikum' they will say, 'and what is the news from London?'

'The news is good. I do latihan every week at each of the appointed times.'

'Ah, that is good. That is your place, there in heaven.'

Brothers and sisters, Bapak will go on talking about the things which are necessary to provide for people's lives, or for your lives, in this world; that is, enterprises. An enterprise, brothers and sisters, is an effort which human beings make with their minds. It is an effort made with their nafsu in order to provide for and take care of their requirements in life while they are living in this world. That is what an enterprise really is, brothers and sisters. It is not the will of God for you to abandon or neglect the powers of your minds and your nafsu, but that you should employ them and make use of them. But you should use them in ways that are really suitable, which means use them for the purposes of this world. You must not use them for the purposes of your life after death. This is another matter; that is a matter for God, that is a spiritual matter.

Thus Bapak's suggestions about enterprises, and his suggestions that you should do enterprises, are because you have received the latihan kejiwaan of Subud, so that it is as if you are receiving the protection of the power of God in running. your enterprises. Only you must not take it in the wrong way, brothers and sisters. You must not use God to find things for you when you do enterprises, but you must find them for yourselves, using your minds. For what can discover the things you need in this world is your auxiliary equipment; that is, the material life-force or roh kebendaan, the vegetable life-force, the animal life-force and the human life-force itself. If you give up using these, you are actually trying to make use of God, and you will not be able to get anything. You must not make use of God to get a loan for you. You must not do that. God is All-powerful; God's power is present in the person from whom you borrow and it is also present in your own self. You cannot get a loan when God's power is present in both the lender and the borrower. Thus you need to make use of your minds. But God is always your protector and He will always continue to protect your work and your actions so long as these really are not contrary to the will of God. That means so long as what you are doing is really what is right for your own lives and for the lives of your families, and for the lives of human beings in general, so that this world becomes prosperous and peaceful. This is what God wills, brothers and sisters.

Supposing, just supposing, that thanks to the latihan kejiwaan of Subud you become rich, brothers and sisters, your material possessions will not influence you to forget God. Your material possessions will become your instruments for the worship of the One Almighty God. This is how it is. You will be different from people who have gained their wealth because of the nafsu, so that their possessions will poison their lives. For their possessions come to be their god, instead of the true God. That is the reason why not a few rich people die if they lose their possessions. Why is that? It is because they feel that their possessions are like their soul. This is how it is, brothers and sisters, and so what Bapak suggests about all of you who have received and practiced the latihan kejiwaan doing enterprises will not be anything other than good, which means that these enterprises will not become obstacles to your worship of God. No. On the contrary, this is what is necessary in order for you to get on top of the material forces, and to ride on their backs instead of letting them ride on yours. That is how it should be.

This is how it is, brothers and sisters, and so the enterprises that Bapak is always urging you to do must be done seriously and sincerely, and you must not try to do them by sitting still and doing the zikir. You must not run a marketing enterprise and then just sit still and repeat la ilaha ilallah, la ilaha ilallah, la ilaha ilallah. Then all your goods will be lost. Thus you must be above your material possessions, not below them. If you can do that, brothers and sisters, God will always continue to protect you. Your enterprise will not break down and stop half way, but, on the contrary, it will go straight ahead.

Bapak takes selling things as an example; when you sell things, then because you are protected by the power of God and because you have become a seller because of the kejiwaan, whatever people buy from you will be like a talisman for them. When they buy something from you, it will do them good; possibly they will become rich. But if you are not doing this from the kejiwaan, the person who buys these goods may even acquire a lot of debts. His life will be full of debts, full of trouble. Why is that? It is because he will always be oppressed by these material possessions because they were obtained from the nafsu. It is different when someone always does the latihan kejiwaan. Then your material possessions are obtained from the kejiwaan by the grace and mercy of the One Almighty God. This is the difference, brothers and sisters; you will be able to feel it later on. This the truth, brothers and sisters. Money has to be earned; yes, of course, for God is not a financier, God is not a banker, God is not a shop-keeper or a hotel manager. No; God is All-powerful, and so it is enough if you use your minds to deal with worldly matters. That is enough. It is not necessary to turn to the power of God. It is not necessary.

It is thus clear, brothers and sisters, that if you always ask God to help you in doing enterprises it means that you are degrading the One Almighty God, whereas you should worship Him throughout your lives in this world. So Bapak hopes that you will not be afraid or disappointed, or feel that doing this will interfere with your latihan. Oh no, not at all. Bapak has experienced this, brothers and sisters. Bapak has experienced this. A religious fanatic, who wishes to do nothing except worship God, might say that to wear a tie is not halal, not lawful. It is not halal to wear a tie. Throw it away. It is not halal, to wear it; throw it out. What ought one to wear? One should wear a vest, and only change it once a year. With what purpose? So as not to be influenced by material things, so they say. That is not the will of God. We should be normal; ordinary, normal people, who understand life in this world, and who live in harmony with their neighbors, with their fellow creatures, and who are always at peace with their families, who love their wives and children, and whose children love their mothers and fathers. This is harmony. This is the bridge leading all of you on to a straight way which leads to perfection. That is how it is, brothers and sisters.

Brothers and sisters, further to these suggestions to all the members, Bapak prays that everything will go well, and Bapak hopes that all of you will always be under the protection of God, and that you will receive the grace and mercy of God, so that your situation will be secure and happy. Bapak does not want to make you feel proud, but you in England are the oldest Subud members and are like Bapak's first-born children, and so he hopes that you, especially here in London, will be able to build a hall; a place for latihan which will fulfil your hopes both in its location and its form. In this way the English members can set an example to and provide an example for the Subud members in other countries. This is what Bapak hopes for you.

Yes, of course, you have to think about all this. Of course you do. Bapak said just now that where the needs of this world are concerned it is necessary to make use of your minds and to think about the way to do things. But you must not make heavy weather of this thinking and wonder, for instance, if it can be done. You must not do that. There was a time, brothers and sisters, when London and England were not as they are now but, through human effort, London has become a great city, full of tall buildings with many stories, and full of halls like this one, and of hotels. Did God ever make any promises about this? No. It was a human effort. God has already given everything to human beings, and you must act, not always complain or beg God to help you. God has already helped you. He has already helped mankind beyond all human hopes or expectations. That is why Bapak often says that the progress of this era has barely reached sixty per cent of its potential. It has not yet reached a hundred per cent, and there is still more to come. Human beings will discover more than they have discovered at present. But you must not forget that in all this it is God Who fulfils the hopes of mankind, so that human beings are able to discover all these things. If it is like that, brothers and sisters, then the question of a hall is a small matter. Why should you not be able to do it? Why should you make heavy weather of it? Get down to work. If you work seriously, you will he able to fulfill your hopes. It is like the case Bapak just mentioned, of how formerly London did not exist, and now it does. This is because of human effort. That, brothers and sisters, is why you must make the effort to use the skills which you already possess to bring progress to Subud, to your country and to your race. If Bapak, who is old, and who does not possess your skills, could undertake the construction of the Subud hall in Jakarta, of course you can do more than Bapak.

To give you a symbol, when he was in Toronto, brothers and sisters, Bapak said spontaneously that he would contribute five hundred dollars to the building of this future hall. No sooner had he said that than Bapak received something very strange. Bapak received a donation from someone whom he did not know. He did not know Bapak and Bapak did not know him. We were in the same religion, the religion of Islam. He is a prince. Thus from five hundred dollars I put it up to two thousand five hundred pounds, which is not five but ten times as much. This is a symbol. Thus if Bapak was able to build a hall such as the one in Jakarta, you ought to be able to build ten times what there is in Jakarta. Not that you have to, but you should be able to. This is why Bapak hopes that you will really do what the Javanese express as cancut tali wondo ( fasten your belts ); that is, be ready and willing to build this hall. Begin at this moment, or tomorrow, and do not be outstripped by other members when you here are Bapak's eldest children, the first-born of Subud.

In concluding Bapak's talk for this morning, Bapak prays that all of this undertaking may receive grace from God, and be successfully achieved. That is all, brothers and sisters, that is the end of Bapak's talk for this morning. In conclusion, Bapak prays that God, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, will bless you and bestow His blessing upon the ideals which we have in Subud, and upon what you hope to accomplish. Amen. Thank you.
