Brothers and sisters, Bapak would like to express first of all, to the committee, the Chairman of the committee and to all of you Subud brothers and sisters here, Bapak's profound thanks for all your generosity, your welcome and the place that you have prepared for Bapak which Bapak has found very satisfying. Bapak prays that Almighty God will repay your generosity manifold. Your generosity in what you have done for Bapak, is fit to be an example for brothers and sisters all over the world. Bapak prays to Almighty God that He will always protect you and look after you and bless you, so that your lives and your situation here may always be one of happiness and well-being.
Brothers and sisters, this is Bapak's last day here with you and although Bapak will in a short while be leaving you to continue his world journey, Bapak feels that it is very important that Bapak should make use of this last opportunity of meeting with you to give you further clarifications about the latihan kejiwaan. Bapak hopes that you will listen to these explanations with a clean feeling, with a feeling of sincerity and acceptance and with a prayer to God that He should give His blessing so that Bapak will be enabled to give an explanation today which will be of real use to you.
Brothers and sisters, as far as Bapak knows from what he has seen and experienced, the latihan kejiwaan is something that has no precedent or equal so far in the world.
The reason why Bapak says this is that all the other things that people do which are directed toward the kejiwaan, are always prefaced by something in the form of a wish or a request. In those ways, in order to receive something, you always have to do something first, the aim of which is to achieve what you want to achieve.
For example, you could reduce the amount of food you eat, or reduce the amount that you sleep, or maybe you could undertake various practices such as meditation, or self-denial, or samadhi. You could become a hermit, go off somewhere by yourself, or give away your things, or something like that. There is always some form of prerequisite. The aim of this activity that the person does is to try to reduce the influence of the nafsu as it acts on man's nature or man's being.
Indeed, in normal life there is no way in which we can neglect or ignore the influence of the nafsu. The existence of the nafsu in our life is something that has to be taken into account. Why? The nafsu is part of our being; it is part of our everyday life. In fact it is the basis of our life in this world.
Bapak can explain the origin of the nafsu by going back to the story of Adam. Adam already existed before he was put into this world by Almighty God. Before he came into this world, his life did not depend on any instruments. It did not depend on any of the accessories we have here. We have eyes, ears, a brain, a nervous system; we have hands and feet.
Adam was able to live without all this. Adam could see without eyes, Adam could taste without a mouth, Adam could hear without ears, Adam could think without a brain and understand without either a heart or a brain.
Adam at that moment had no form, but he was real. He really lived. The name Adam actually means "the beginning, or the origin." It comes from a word that means "beginning".
Adam's life at that moment was complete, but was without nafsu. Adam's life did not need anything like will or nafsu or desire, because his life was perfect, and full of understanding and satisfaction. But he was not yet living in this world.
When people picture Adam as he was when he was first created by Almighty God, he is drawn as a naked man. That is a symbol. Clothes represent nafsu, so drawing Adam as naked means that he did not yet possess nafsu. He was still completely pure, completely clean. The purity of the nature of Adam corresponds to the state of a baby before it is born, while it is still in the womb of its mother.
When it was God's Will that Adam should come into this world and live in this world as the first human being, God had to give Adam all the accessories or instruments that are required by man to live in this world. Adam needed to have a physical body; he had to have a heart and mind, eyes, ears, and all that. All of this was given to him to enable him to exist and to see, hear, think and live in this world. He could already do all these things, but only in heaven. Now he had to live in this world, so he had to be given all this and he had to be given nafsu: the will to get, to do, to achieve.
When Adam was first created by God in this world, he was just like a newborn baby. He cried. He cried because he was sad, because he was suffering.
Now, we know that normally when a baby is born, that baby cries. Probably to most people this is something trivial. You expect a newborn baby to cry. The fact is that nothing happens without a cause. Actually, what cries at that moment is the feeling of the young baby, who has been used to a world that is complete and satisfying and now has come into this world where he has to live with his physical body, its accessory instruments, and the nafsu. Although the baby possesses eyes, ears, and nose and brain and all these instruments, at that time he is still helpless, because none of these instruments is yet working. For example, even though the baby has eyes and the form of those eyes is complete, they are still not able to work; the baby is not yet able to use them for seeing.
So at the moment when the baby is born, he can still possess the pure feeling, the purity and the understanding which he had when he was in his mother's womb, or, for example, which Adam had when he was in heaven, if we take that parallel. But gradually, as day follows day and week follows week, that baby is able to see shapes with his eyes. These instruments that he has been given begin to work. He is able to use his eyes; he is able to hear sounds and so gradually he begins to recognize this world. He begins to be able to use these instruments, his physical eyes, his physical ears, his heart and mind. And as he does so, the reality and closeness of the other world, the feeling and the sight and the understanding of his jiwa begins to diminish, becoming less and less real.
Shortening the timescale, as month follows month and year follows year, this little baby begins to grow up. He begins to understand the difference between good and bad, between what he wants and what he doesn't want. He begins to become clever at living in this world. But as that skill increases, his contact with his jiwa decreases. It becomes unreal and it becomes unconscious. Eventually it is not surprising if that human being when grown up and fully in command of all his instruments - the faculties he needs for living in this world - no longer believes in God. He says, "Well, I cannot see God. I cannot see God with my eyes, I cannot hear His voice. What I cannot see, or hear, or touch, does not exist. This is not surprising, because he has made a complete changeover; now he only has faith in his instruments which he needs for life in this world.
Now Bapak also says that the reason why an expectant mother sometimes has cravings - she wants to eat this or to eat that - is actually the wish of the baby. The baby's feeling is still very sharp; it is still very strong. It is so strong that the baby can put its wish into the heart and mind of the mother in this life. This is the nature of the life that we live with the jiwa, that we are able to penetrate into the heart and mind of somebody else. This is actually something which you will experience and should experience through the latihan kejiwaan. As you progress in the latihan kejiwaan, eventually you return to the state of a baby in the mother's womb, so you will be able to project or to put your thinking into the thinking of somebody else.
Brothers and sisters, this is why in every religion we are forbidden to have a feeling of hatred towards other people. The reason for this is that our hatred, even if we do not speak about it, can be felt by somebody else. This is why not only should we not have bad feelings and bad thoughts about other people, but even more we are not allowed to say bad things of other people. Even more, we are not allowed to do bad things. As people who experience the latihan kejiwaan, you should more and more be careful about what you feel about other people and what you think about other people. For even if you do not speak about them, your thoughts and feelings can penetrate and affect the person. The person can feel what you are feeling.
This is the breadth and greatness of the latihan kejiwaan. Such is the scope of the relationship between man and God and the relation between this world and the hereafter. There are so many things in our life that can contribute to the lowering of our degree, to the destruction of our human nature and of our human qualities. There are also so many things in our life which can improve our human nature and raise up our spiritual level.
Through illustrating the relationship between the life of the jiwa and the life of the nafsu, you can begin to see what an enormous effect the nafsu and all the equipment that God has given us to live in this world, has on us. Putting all our attention and our faith in that makes it harder and harder for us to feel our original life, which is the jiwa we possess before birth. This is why people who really take their religion seriously always try to put aside the influence of this world.
In most religions they are told to give away all their possessions, to have no regard for money and to have no truck with the business of this world, but simply to give away everything which relates to this world and to concentrate on prayers and the needs of the next world.
Why? They can intuitively feel that the world which is important, the world that determines everything, is the next world. This world here is only a world of transition, a world which we have to go through, but is of no permanent value to our being.
What these people are trying to do is right; but it is also wrong. It is right because basically they are right in what they feel about the relationship between this world and the next. But it is wrong because they forget that we have been given our nafsu and we have been put in this world by the Will of Almighty God. Almighty God has willed us to live in this world and has given us the instruments of the heart and mind and nafsu in order for us to live in this world.
If it is God's will that we do this, then there must be some reason for it. If it were only necessary for us to throw away everything to do with this world and only to wait for the time when we return to the next world, then all this wouldn't have been necessary. God wouldn't have needed to have given us our nafsu and our physical bodies and all the wonderful instruments and faculties that we have to live in this world.
It is clear then, that if we look at the reality of our situation, man has to know this world. Man is empowered by God to get to know this world, to get in touch with this world and to work in this world, but at the same time to know the other world. Man must not lose touch with the life that he experienced before he came into this world. He must not lose the contact that he has with the Power of Almighty God. He must use his nafsu to work in this world, but not forgetting the contact with the Power of God and the life of the jiwa.
This is the reality which you feel in the latihan kejiwaan. We have to return in order to remember, in order to come back to the point where we have contact with our jiwa, with the power of God as when we were in the womb. We have no choice but to go back and be like we were before we were born. How can we, with our intelligence and our knowledge of the world, how can we go back and be like a little baby?
The way is what you are experiencing: The re-awakening of the life within your life, in the latihan. This is the life which is free from the influence of the nafsu. You experienced this as you progress in the latihan kejiwaan.
As times change, man's life also changes.
The life of man today is not like the life of man as it used to be. In the old days, man was able to carry out his two duties: He could live in this world and yet could still feel the life of the jiwa. At that time, it was not necessary for him to have this latihan kejiwaan. Why? Life in those days was different. Man in those days was different. Bapak knows very well the difference. For example, in the olden days, man could decide not to eat for a month and he could do it without any difficulty. Now, Bapak knows very well that if we don't eat for an hour, our stomach is already starting to rumble and we getting heartburn or something like that.
So it is clear that things are different today. There is no point in trying to go back to how man used to be in the olden days, because the world has changed. God constantly brings change to the world. Nothing stays the same. We should not be afraid to embrace the world that is here now: the modern world. The world today is full of things that were unimaginable only a few decades ago. This world is full of things that are incredibly modern. Knowledge is available to mankind which was not available only a few years ago. God knows this. Don't worry about it. If it had not been God's will, it couldn't have happened.
Man will not make discoveries which God does not want him to make. If the world is like it is now, it means God wills it to be. So we have to be willing to face the modern world in all its modernism. Bapak says: 'Be as modern as you possibly can. Don't be afraid. You have been given something by Almighty God which is really in tune with this modern world. That is the latihan kejiwaan.'
This is the distinction between what man was given before, and what man is given today. This latihan kejiwaan really fits in with the modern world that we have today. It enables us to live normal lives as people in the modern world and still return, bit by bit, to regain our contact with the true life, the life that is aware of the hereafter, aware of the life of our jiwa and the power of Almighty God.
If you can see it from this point of view, it is clear that this latihan kejiwaan which God has brought into the world today, is an enormous gift to the world. It is like a gift of immense, immeasurable value. It permits us to do whatever we like to do, whatever we need to do today, without holding back, without fear of being contaminated by what is going on in the world. No matter how modern we are, what we are doing will always be overshadowed by the Power of God. It will always be accompanied and protected by the Power of God.
This is why Bapak - while bringing something spiritual, something for the kejiwaan to the man of today also insists on accompanying this latihan kejiwaan with enterprises.
But don't get the idea that enterprises are something new. What Bapak means by enterprises started with Adam. Adam had to do enterprise the moment that he was created, because without enterprise, he could not have progressed from a naked child that had just been created. He had to find ways of making clothes, he had to find ways of making himself a house; tie had to find ways of feeding himself.
This is what Bapak means by enterprises.
What did Adam have to go on except what was within himself'?
He was able to find within himself how to live in this world, through what God had given him.
Brothers and sisters, God is huwalawal and huwalahir. That means that God comes before every beginning and comes after every ending. Everything that exists in this world is under God's protection, and has been created by God, and is watched over by God. You don't ever have to be afraid that there is something in this world which is profane, something of which God does not approve. Everything is here by God's Will. It remains for us how to make use of this.
That is why, with the latihan kejiwaan, there is nothing wrong with becoming rich. If you are rich, but you have truly received the latihan kejiwaan, you have within you this awareness of the Power of God. Then, when you are counting your money, every time you count it will be accompanied by the name of God. Bapak illustrated it. You could go, "Allah, Allah, Allah, Allah," as you are counting your bank notes for example. That means that whatever you do is already guided by the power of Almighty God.
This means that gradually, as you progress, man and God become one. Your actions, as it were, are always accompanied by God. It is this oneness between man the creature and God the Creator which is sought after by all mankind and what is willed by God Himself. This is what everyone is looking for.
Bapak hopes very much that you will be willing to work hard, that you will not be afraid or hold back from using your faculties to the maximum of your ability and at the same time, receiving the latihan kejiwaan. When you receive something, or when you achieve something, do not be too quickly happy. Do not be too proud or pleased with yourself, because it is this feeling of cockiness, or feeling, 'Now, I've achieved something,' that is what knocks you down. That is what holds you back.
What we have to remember is that next to whatever we receive that is nice or pleasant or good, is hell. After every feeling of heaven, next to it there is hell, so we have to always remain cautious and careful, because everything is accompanied by its opposite.
There is no pleasure without pain. There is no heaven without hell. There is no progress without regression. So no matter how wonderful what we have received is, we have to be aware that its opposite is right there next to it. We have to always remain conscious and attentive to what we have received from Almighty God.
This is the secret of receiving the latihan kejiwaan.
Throughout receiving the latihan, we have to be attentive; we have to be aware that the process of the latihan, and the process of human life, is no different from the process of life of a tree or flower. The vessel looks and is different, but the process is the same. As the tree grows from a little plant and gets bigger and bigger and bigger, it gets ~ore and more dry until it dies. We have to realize that the process is a double process of building up and breaking down. That is the nature of human life.
The important thing for us is to always be attentive and aware of the reality of our life, both outwardly, in our everyday life, and inwardly in the latihan kejiwaan. This is why when you feel yourself to be very clever and very perspicacious, and you think you have found something very high or very fantastic, don't get the feeling that this something God has created is very permanent: because there is nothing permanent except the Power of Almighty God.
If you are able to remember this, then you will be able to achieve a way of life that is willed by Almighty God which is normal, where you are like an ordinary person· You have an ordinary life, but you are conscious of everything that is going on.
Brothers and sisters, if one talks about life, the stories you can tell are limitless. If you content yourself with just talking about it, you will always tell stories, but you will run out of paper, because if you try to write them down, there is not enough paper in the world to take all the stories.
There is a limit to talking. Since you have all received the latihan, since you have all received this gift where you can receive for yourself, quickly, easily, without too much in the way of prerequisites or preparation, Bapak is now going to go on and do what is in the latihan kejiwaan. In other words, we will receive for ourselves something of what Bapak has been talking about, so you can become aware of the reality as well as the stories.
( Testing )
What this means ( referring to the testing ), is that actually you are able to receive what Bapak was asking you, but your ability to receive it is not enough, because you haven't done enough latihan; in other words, you haven't been diligent enough in your latihan. This means that the strength of your inner, your jiwa, and the strength of your outer is very much out of balance. The reason for that is you haven't really been diligent in your latihan and you haven't enough faith in Almighty God.
So if one takes as a cue what you have just shown, it is clear that it is very difficult for you still to find guidance from within about how you should live your life.
You know, right now you are only facing Bapak, but later, you will be facing the angels. How will you make out then? They are much tougher than Bapak! ( Laughter )
Bapak wants to demonstrate. ( Bapak stands ) Bapak is an old man of 83. If he walks as an ordinary man of 83, how does he walk? ( Bapak demonstrates ) If Bapak walks upright, it is because of his jiwa, because it is God's Will. So actually when Bapak is 90 years old, he will still walk that way.
Now actually man is guided by God all the time. All his life, until his last day, he is guided by God.
( Bapak has someone sing in the testing ) This is why, if you understand it, in all religions singing is required in ceremonies. Singing actually makes our breathing, our chest, strong. Don't get used to always being silent, because gradually you will become like a stone.
Brothers and sisters, according to the customs of the hall in which we are sitting, it is required that we have an interval in order to serve tea, because it is not allowed to bring the tea in here. Bapak would like to suggest to you that this is why you should be doing enterprises, so that one day you will have a hall like this belonging to you, and you can bring your tea in whenever you like. ( Laughter )
( Talk resumes after a tea break of 20 minutes )
Brothers and sisters, Bapak hasn't been able to do a lot with you, but it is mainly because there is not enough time to do this testing. The important thing Bapak needs to emphasize is that you should do a lot of latihan, all of you. But when Bapak said you should do a lot of latihan, Bapak wants to warn you that you should not misinterpret this and do your latihan with your nafsu with your will or intention but with complete surrender.
That is how you can have proof of what is happening within you. The proof that you are truly being guided by Almighty God. It is the only way that you can have proof, the outward confirmation of what your real situation is in the kejiwaan, so that your life will then be no longer retarded or difficult·
Brothers and sisters, it is said that in every religion that exists, that man is closely accompanied by and is closely watched over by the Power of God. It is generally stated that the Power of God is always close to man and supports man.
If that is the case, why is it that man is always generally unaware of this closeness and support? The reason why is because man is weak and he is very easily influenced by his heart and mind.
Indeed, man needs the heart and the mind for this life in this world. It is very clear that the heart and mind can be obstacles which both influence and disturb man. They are always obstructing man's ability to receive the guidance and the Power of God.
One might say, "O.K., let's get rid of the heart and the mind then." But the trouble is that we need the heart and mind. The heart and mind can solve problems. We can work out what is the right thing to do in this situation and what is the right thing to do in that' situation, how to overcome this obstacle and that obstacle in the world.
So we cannot put aside the use of the mind. But, at the same time, we have to recognize that it is these instruments of ours that are an obstruction to our being able to feel the power of God. It is because we really need the heart and mind, even though they can be obstacles, that Almighty God has always and will always give us something else. This something else is God's Revelation, God's Grace, God's Gift to mankind. He has given it to the messengers of God. And now He gives this to man in the form of the latihan kejiwaan: something that permits us to instantly put aside the influence of the heart and mind and the nafsu, so that we once again receive the guidance of the Power of Almighty God.
The thing every religion teaches us is here; it is here close to man and yet man cannot feel it. So now God gives something that enables man to put aside the disturbing influence of the heart and mind; something which prevents us from feeling this disturbance, so that once again we can get in touch with the Power of God.
Brothers and sisters, now that we have received this, it is clear that we have two duties or two responsibilities in our lives, as Bapak has said earlier. One responsibility is to worship Almighty God. This is an obligation: yet it is something in which we can do nothing except surrender ourselves completely to the Power of Almighty God, as we do when we do the latihan kejiwaan. That is the only thing we can do. The worship of man toward God is only guided by Almighty God.
Actually our only responsibility towards our worship of God is to do our latihan kejiwaan and surrender with patience, acceptance and submission towards His Power. Then God will act. The power of God will act within our being in the way that our heart and mind cannot grasp and cannot assist.
The second duty is to fulfill the needs of our life in this world· This means to take care of our life, to provide enough for what we need in this world in order to make our life satisfying, to provide for our families and our dependants, and, in everything, to try to arrange our life as well as possible. For this, we need to work.
There is no money we can earn in this world without working. It is an absolute condition for us to work. But, having the guidance of Almighty God within us, we can receive from the Power of Almighty God what is the right way for us to work in this world. It is enough just to follow, because the guidance of God is there, within our heart and mind, right within our nafsu.
As we are using the nafsu, as we are working in our everyday life, we are guided by the Power of Almighty God. It is only needed for us to just follow whatever we receive and then we will find our way. We will learn how it is right for us to work in such a way that our work becomes fruitful. So brothers and sisters, when Bapak talks about enterprises, this is not something brand new; it is not a brand new idea that Bapak has invented. Enterprise is something that is basic to our life. Whatever talent we have will come out spontaneously, as a result of our worship of Almighty God. This guidance that we get from within will really enable us to build a career in this world, a career that is really successful and brings us to a situation of happiness and satisfaction. To give you a concrete example, supposing that our right work is to be a singer, then through our latihan, we will receive a way of singing that is so beautiful that it will touch, really touch, the heart of everyone who listens to it.
Supposing we are an architect. We will receive, through the latihan, the ability to design things which are really different from everything that anyone has designed before. It will be something really new and really attractive for people; it won't just be a copy from what other people have done.
If you are a lawyer, you will receive through the latihan how to argue your case in such a way that it is really right. Everyone will be impressed with the clarity of the argument that you are putting forward. You will be guided by the latihan to find the right way of doing your work.
As for women, does it mean that women will not be guided by the latihan kejiwaan to receive guidance for their lives? Of course they will. Women will also receive guidance in all the sort of things that are done by women. For example, you will be guided how to dress, how to make up your face, how to cook and how to do all the normal work that women do, work suited to the nature of women· You also will find a happiness and a satisfaction in your life from the perfection and the completeness of the way in which you are able to work in this world.
So, brothers and sisters, if other people - that is, people outside Subud - who have not received the guidance of God, who have not received the worship of God, if they can make a success of their work in such a way that they really produce something beneficial and find satisfaction and happiness in their lives, how much more should we in Subud be able to do it.
We have made friends with the Power of God. Imagine that you have suddenly got a very powerful friend, a friend who owns everything, a friend who knows everything. If you are close to that person, how is it possible that you are not successful? Bapak really reminds you that you should have faith in the Power of Almighty God.
You should always think to yourself: The power of God is superior to everything; the Power of God knows everything, can do everything. If you are close to that Power, if you really have faith in the Power of God, it is not possible that you will not be successful, that you will not do well in whatever God guides you to do.
To summarize: the latihan kejiwaan you have received is not something that is limited to yourself. It should be possible for you to produce something through your latihan that is of value to other people, to society and the world around you.
Secondly, it is really God's Will and it is really necessary for you to bring other people to the worship of Almighty God. In other words, through your example, through your ability to explain what Subud is, it should be possible to attract other human beings who have not yet received this latihan kejiwaan, so that they understand and feel the value of the worship of Almighty God.
Through your example, by what you are as well as your explanations, you can bring more people to the latihan.
This gift of Grace that God has given to us should not just be stuck with the few people here, but should spread and becomes more and more real in the world. In this way, man's ability to worship God, and the development of man's relationship with God, can truly grow deeper, and more perfect as time goes on.
Our responsibility and our duty as Subud members is to bring the whole of mankind closer to God.
If we have received God's Grace, it is like a rain. We have received the rain, now what do we do with it? Does it just go to waste, does it just disappear to run off to the sea? Or, can we do something with it?
Bapak wants you to realize that the latihan kejiwaan you have received is like rain. It has come down from clouds in the sky. Rain can do many things. Rain can be a danger to human life. It can cause floods and it can cause damage, but if man uses his ability and guides it in the right direction, it can become a source of fertility, a source of benefit to human society· Can we make use of this rain, of this bounty that God has given us?
If we do not, if this latihan gets stuck inside, it will not only not progress, it will not only not grow in the world, but it will become a source of darkness for you, because all sorts of imaginations will arise within your being. If you have not used the latihan to make something outside of yourself, then, rather than being a benefit to you, it will become an obstacle and a burden·
Truly, if you can pass on this latihan to other people, through your example, through how you are in your life, then that is the real amal: the real service to humanity which will give an enormous reward, a reward that you cannot imagine, both for your life in this world and for your life in the hereafter.
If someone in Subud has received the latihan kejiwaan it is very strange and peculiar to hear or see him a tramp, or a good-for-nothing. A Subud member who doesn't work, who does nothing, is very strange. If you really have received this latihan if you realize what it means, then the latihan kejiwaan opens up for you like a broad avenue, a road that you can walk down, which is your way of life. It is wide and full of satisfaction and profit for yourself and for those around you.
Brothers and sisters, Bapak wants to give you an example to prove that through the latihan kejiwaan we are given a wide road, or a wide indication of the direction in which we have to go.
Bapak has himself recently started a new project you may have heard of, in Kalimantan, a large island north of Java. If you ask why Bapak does this, or what is the use of this for Bapak, the answer is that for Bapak there is no particular reason· Bapak is already old. If Bapak were looking for wealth, what would the use of the wealth be for Bapak? Bapak has everything he needs and Bapak does not need to make big efforts to make money.
The reason Bapak is doing this is because it is the responsibility of one who understands to give an example to those who do not understand. It is the responsibility of a parent to give education to his children, to set an example for them to follow and understand. This is why Bapak has taken this step of starting these projects.
Bapak knows, Bapak can see that in Kalimantan there are resources in the earth which can be very valuable, very useful for mankind.
As Bapak told you earlier, inside of the being of man, there are many beings of spirits, starting from the material level and going to the vegetable level, to the animal level and then to the human level· These beings and spirits are useful for us. They are there for the purpose of helping us to live in this world. If they truly are our servants, then they can teach us things about this world. They can tell us things and help us to find what we need to have in this world· That is why Bapak knows that inside the earth in Kalimantan there are all sorts of minerals, all sorts of things that are valuable and useful for mankind.
Why is it that nobody else knows this? It is because they are blind; they do not see. This is very interesting. What is blinding them is their own nafsu. It is very important for you to understand, brothers and sisters, that the nafsu, in addition to being an obstacle in our worship of God - in our feeling the guidance of God in our being - the nafsu can also make us blind. The power of the nafsu can make our heart and mind useless so that we fail to understand or see what is around us. But, with the latihan kejiwaan which separates us from the power of the nafsu, we can get indications and guidance so that we can begin to get a very broad understanding of what the world contains, and of what our right path is.
Bapak sent some people to Kalimantan to do some surveys. He told them to bring back some rocks from there. They were able to buy these rocks there from people there who didn't know they were of any use. They were able to buy a lot of rocks there for maybe 500 rupiahs ( Approx. 85 cents U.S. ) When they got back to Jakarta and showed them to mineral experts, they said, "One piece of this rock is worth 10,000 rupiahs." So you see that, if we truly follow the guidance of Almighty God, it's possible to discover all sorts of new things.
Brothers and sisters, it is clear that God provides man with everything he needs for his life. If we follow God's guidance, we can find our way in our life in this world. What makes us blind is the influence of the nafsu. Once you have received this guidance of God, as you have received it in the latihan, you only need to just follow it. Just follow it and see where it leads you. Everything will go well, as long as you observe one thing. That is, whatever, you do must always be done according to the line of what is right. You must never do your work, or your enterprise, m such a way as to hurt other people, to restrict the freedom of other people, or to take away from other people something they have. You should never do it in a way that causes conflict or arguments or fighting. Always try to keep to what is right and what is the best behavior. Providing you do your work, your enterprise, and you carry out your talent in a way that is honest and just towards other people, you will certainly be successful.
Brothers and sisters, Bapak knows that among you here in Sri Lanka there are people from India and Pakistan. Bapak would like you also to have an opportunity to experience also the reality of the latihan kejiwaan. Bapak would like to start first of all with the members from Pakistan.
Would some of you, or one of you, come to the front? ( The one Pakistani member comes to the front ) You are certainly a Muslim, is that right?
It is clear that it is necessary for you and it is a duty for you to go on with this, to go on being a Muslim· But what is important is that you should become aware of the reality of Islam within your own being...
Relax. Surrender. Do not do the zikir unless you are made to do it from within.
Now, what is the work which you ought to be doing in this world, the type of work which would be really beneficial to yourself?. Follow, so that you can be shown from within.
Is this clear to you already? If you put it into words, what do you understand by it? ( Writer, painter, artist )
Yes, that's right. Is that something you are doing now? ( Partly )
How many members are there in Pakistan? ( Only two )
Have you ever come across someone who is called Professor? - He is a member of Subud. Is he doing the latihan? ( Not that I know of )That is because he is clever in thinking about things. He is so famous that his latihan will disappear. This is the problem· If a rich man gets very rich, then he forgets about his latihan. It is the same with a man who is very clever. It takes a very rich man to forget his latihan. The Prophet Muhammad himself has said that a rich man is covered up by his own wealth and a clever man is confused by his own cleverness.
Bapak wants to know, were you able to feel the test that Bapak did with you just now? ( Yes )
Bapak wants those who are from a long way to feel the proof for themselves. Actually, those of you who are here who have a lot of friends and so on in the group, it is part of your job to be able to go there and spread the latihan there among people. It shouldn't be only Bapak who has to travel around. Bapak is alone. It is your job to do that too.
( Testing continues )
You are both from India. What is your duty towards each other according to the Will of God?
·.. You have the right idea, in your receiving, that you want to join together, you want to embrace each other. But even though you both have this strong desire, you still miss each other· This is actually the situation in India now. Although it is all one country and the people in that country very much want to unite, there is still dissension and division and quarrelling between different factions· This is the need for the latihan kejiwaan, to enable us to eventually come together as one.
·.. Bapak would like to explain to you that the jiwa is very large, unlike the physical body. The jiwa can know the character of someone else even though that someone else is of a different nationality·
( More testing )
This is a little taste for you; through the latihan it is possible to know the character or characteristics of other people· The result of this is that wherever you are, or happen to be, whether you are traveling somewhere, or if you are living far away from home, you will never feel strange or out of place. You can always adjust your own attitude to the place where you happen to be...
This was a test which was quite close to home. As Bapak told you yesterday, one who can know an angel is only another angel. One who can know another prophet is only another prophet· The way in which Bapak has just shown you, this is the way in which you can become one with whatever God wants you to meet or get to know. Furthermore, for us this presents a way or a technique for achieving harmony among ourselves in this world, through knowing each others' customs and so on...
( Testing concluded )
Brothers and sisters, this is also Bapak's moment of farewell because tonight Bapak will continue his journey to London. Bapak prays to Almighty God that He may give you His blessing, so that you will continue with your latihan kejiwaan diligently, and will receive the proof or the reality of its benefit and its usefulness for your life both in this world and in the next.
Bapak hopes that Bapak will frequently in the future be able to come here and be able to meet with you, see all of you, witness your latihan and take cognizance of the progress that you have made and that you will make in the future·
Finally, Bapak doesn't forget, if Bapak thanks you once again, for the way that you have looked after Bapak and his party while they were here. Bapak has felt your attention truly satisfying and Bapak prays that Almighty God will reward you many times over for what you have done for Bapak. Bapak adds once more, that Bapak hopes really and seriously, that you will start doing enterprises so that before long you will have your own hall which you can use in any way you like, and you can have your tea inside and you won't have to go outside anymore.
Thank you.
