You are Subud and Subud is You

Brothers and sisters, Bapak welcomes you : Assalammu alaikum warahmatullahi wabara katuh.

In the first place, Bapak says thank you very much for the work of the organizing committee. Although the time was extremely short they have been able to organize the congress well even if not as well as it could have been. Therefore Bapak thanks them very much once again and hopes that in the future they will be given a rather longer time so as to be able to prepare ,note thoroughly and better than perhaps they have been able to do this time.

Brothers and sisters, next Bapak will give you an explanation and a guideline regarding the nature of the latihan kejiwaan and also the nature of the organization of Susila Budhi Dharma. Even though you may have heard this explanation before and already know it, but there is still nothing wrong with Bapak repeating it so that you may really and truly understand the foundation and aim and essence of the latihan kejiwaan of Subud and also its organization.

Brothers and sisters, the purpose of holding this zonal meeting in the field of the kejiwaan is so that every member may possess an understanding of Subud in his inner feeling and may be truly aware of it. As Bapak said yesterday, when you may also have been present, this latihan kejiwaan of Subud is not a latihan which is planned by the thinking and the heart but proceeds by itself based on a genuine surrender to Almighty 'God. So it is clear that if we wish to describe it, this latihan is the same as the revelation, the gift or the grace of Almighty God such as when human beings in the olden days received a revelation from Almighty God: something unexpected, something that was beyond the ordinary. This is why there is no theory in Subud nor any special way for obtaining the latihan such as through doing samadi, meditation or concentration. No, on the contrary, that will cause you to turn away from the direction of God's power. Because the fact is, as Bapak said yesterday, that God is Almighty, God is All-knowing. Before you know, God already knows. It is said that before anything existed, God existed. So God precedes everything that exists both in the world and outside of this world.

So if the method for facing towards God or meeting God is organized according to the working of man's thought, it cannot succeed. It cannot work and it cannot succeed because the whole content of this world as well as what is beyond is filled by God's power, is filled by the essence of Allah Subhannahu wata'ala . So it is clear, brothers and sisters, that the latihan kejiwaan of Subud exists not through any intention, not by design but by the grace of Almighty God. If you ask the reason for it, Bapak himself does not know the reason, for God cannot be known except by God Himself.

So, the reason it is necessary for all of you delegates from the kejiwaan side to come together here in this zonal meeting is so that as helpers you may truly gain an awareness of what the latihan kejiwaan of Subud is and also of its consequences and its progression. If you were to comment or to reply that it is not yet certain that the helpers are able to explain and to bring real understanding to the members, Bapak can accept that but the fact is that you have had the opportunity of listening to all the talks Bapak has given. So Bapak's talks have a use for you all in explaining and bringing understanding to Subud members who do not yet understand the nature of the latihan kejiwaan of Subud.

The importance, brothers and sisters, of Subud members having a true awareness of Subud is that then we will not always have to keep telling each other of our common needs because each member will spontaneously' be aware of them. For Subud and its members, the members and Subud, or the Subud members and Bapak - that is, myself - are one, are together within the compass of God's greatness. So the needs of Subud are the same as your own needs while your own needs are the same as the needs of Subud.

This is the reason why, whenever Bapak creates something new, Bapak always informs you all and invites all of you to join with him. But just to join in is not enough, brothers and sisters, if the feeling of a pioneer is not awakened within your inner feeling. So what Bapak hopes is that if you join in and do something with Bapak, you will possess the nature of a pioneer - otherwise you will not be able to call yourself one. Because Subud is not something where you are invited, persuaded or pursued - you join because you yourself sincerely wish to worship Almighty God. So we open our arms to receive you and will not reject you if you wish to join, but neither will we persuade you to become a Subud member, no. For any other course, in today's world, will only lead to all sorts of problems and involve us in a lot of talk which is not backed up by reality.

Therefore, brothers and sisters, your experiences of the latihan kejiwaan which you are bringing as delegates in order to express them in front of your brothers and sisters here are simply to enable you all to better understand all that Bapak tells you whenever he gives you a talk, with the intention of deepening your understanding of Subud. Therefore truly, it should no longer be necessary for you to ask what Subud is. For you as Subud members should already understand that Subud is you and you are Subud.

For the same reason, in Subud there is no such thing as expulsion or excommunication of Subud members. Once someone has been accepted and opened, then he is already one with Subud. It is done. So the worship of God cannot be obstructed or fenced in, if indeed that worship is by God's grace in the way you received it when you were opened.

When you were opened, you felt as though something strange was present within you, something foreign to your inner feeling or to your mind. The question may have occurred to you, "Why do I receive in this way? Is there something within me like a movement of life or is it that something has entered into me?" Don't think that there are not a lot of Subud members who ask themselves this question. This is the reason why there are many who enter Subud and then are not seen again. Bapak does not feel disappointed if they do not come back for it is their own need that is in question, their own interest. If you have the chance to learn and to know things you have not understood before, it is your own good fortune, isn't it? Conversely, if you do not wish to that is also your right. In Javanese they say: "dosa pakannira pribadi": it is your own affair.

The opening is a moment during which by God's will His power is introduced to man so that man can feel: "Within this life of mine, there is another life that encompasses life". For you should not think that your life is the isolated life of a human being. That is not so. Your life as a human being is filled with all kinds of life, which are described in Islam as the life force of the material, or Roh Raiwani, the Roh Nabati, or the life force of plants, the Roh Hewani, or life force of animals, the Roh Jasmani, or the state of a human being or the physical body; then there is also the Roh Rohani or the life force that cannot be seen but truly strengthens your life.

If one can say so - there are those who like to say so - the roh rohani is the roh of the faithful, of those whose nature is Islam. Even this, we are in fact not allowed to use these words if we wish mankind to be harmonious - it is better to say simply: it is a roh which is fine, a roh which is filled by what is called today "morality", a morality that it is fitting to follow and to practice.

Above that there are still other life forces, that is, Roh Ramani and besides that still higher, wider, more all embracing: the Roh Rabani - but if we say "higher" it is as if it is only "on top of the others whereas in fact it encompasses them. This means that the life force of the material which is in fact the lowest life force is actually in the middle, while above and below it are the vegetable, animal, human, rochani, rachmani, and rabani.

So, your life is not isolated or alone. Your strength is not only your own. And by the decree of Allah, the decree of Almighty God, there is still more, a life force above rabani called Roh Ilofi. And even that is not yet enough, for by God's will ( not Bapak's ) there is one more called Roh Kudus, meaning the angels. So what envelops from within is the power of the Roh Ilofi, while from outside it is the Roh Kudus, the roh of the angels.

So what is lacking in that which God has given to man? What is incomplete in that which God has given to all His creatures? It is truly complete, truly enough and perfect. And then maybe you ask: "Where then is God?". God, brothers and sisters, Bapak has already told you, His power is Almighty, All-embracing, All-pervading and All-inspiring. Therefore, something that is great and so diverse as Bapak has just described can be summarized into one, meaning all - that is: the power of God.

So if you say that you have met with God like this, well, you may say it if you like but it cannot be true because it is not possible to fraternize with God or be on familiar terms with Him. And why is that, brothers and sisters? The reason is a big secret. Even a person who has become rich through his own thinking, only because of his own thinking, already feels as if he were God: "No one can stand against me!" he will say. Such is man. Such is the influence of the nafsu which Bapak explained yesterday. Possessing only the understanding of a human being, of the Jasmaniah, he is already like that - how much more so if he were on the level of the Roh Rochani, Rahmani, Rabani, Ilofi, Kudus. May be this world would cease to exist. So great is the danger. Even in everyday wisdom it is said that a boat steered by two captains will veer from side to side and crash for it is subject to double command. So it is clear that command may not be double. Nothing may be double, for it will lead to conflict and a struggle for power. Similarly, brothers and sisters, decision making may not be double. Yes now and no tomorrow; no tomorrow and yes after tomorrow - don't do that. This is what is called in Javanese "sabdo pandito ratu" ( the word of a holy king ). Once a holy man becomes, king, once the king becomes a holy man, then he must be trusted and believed. If he says that, it is that. If he says yes, it is yes. If he says no, it is no.

Therefore, in this Subud, there is that which we experience which does not exist in or is not in accordance with that which occurs in Islam, meaning not only in the ordinary Islam but even in the Islam of the prophets. But, conversely, there are those who have said that this latihan kejiwaan of Subud is truly the latihan of the saints and the prophets. Yes, Bapak agrees with that. But why has God given it to mankind at this time? If it has been given now by God, if we have received from God now, it means that God wills and permits it that way and does not distinguish between what has happened before and what is happening now. For what is different is the people. There cannot be any difference in God. The God of people of old is the same as the God of people today. There is no difference. So it is clear, brothers and sisters, that if some teaching or some opinion is truly from God Almighty, meaning that it comes from the original source, why then would it conflict with all the others? Why then do people say this one is better, this one is more true, that one is not, that one is wrong?

We have been able to appreciate this from the latihan kejiwaan. When we meet for latihan there are people present who are catholic, there are protestants, there are Muslims belonging to various kinds of Islam, such as Muhammadiyah, Achmadiah. In the same latihan there may be those of the Hindu religion, Buddhists and even those without any religion at all. Why then is it that the latihan is nevertheless harmonious? The harmony in the latihan, in this meeting with brothers or sisters of various races and religions, proves that in fact the gift of God which is truly from God is from One source, from the source of Almighty God, so it is certain to lead to harmony.

From these experiences in the latihan, we can draw the conclusion that the latihan kejiwaan of Subud is universal, and this the reason why Bapak does not give it a name that is peculiar or that relates to this or that, or has a connection with a particular religion. Because man, brothers and sisters, cannot put aside the nafsu and cannot be without the nafsu. A human being who is abandoned by the nafsu is like a dead thing, like a stone. Man without his nafsu has no force. So if we wish to avoid anything that causes disharmony, then let us simply say, as in Islam: "asnapun", "up to you". For human beings, especially nowadays, possess a fundamental right, a personal right to choose according to their own will; therefore, this way is safer.

And why is it necessary in Subud to have a rule whereby people have to become candidates for at least three months or more before being opened? What is the point of it? It has an extremely important point, brothers and sisters, that we should remain free from the usual suspicion that we make claims such as "because of Subud, you will become like this", or "because of Subud you will become like that". Normally, people look for what is pleasant and if they do not find something pleasant then they will blame that which they do find. So they will blame Subud for whatever unpleasantness they meet with. "It will be the fault of Subud.

"Before, I used to be rich, but after I entered Subud all my wealth disappeared." There are many like that, till now there are still people going around saying that. Or, "Before, I used to be good at my work, but since coming into Subud, I cannot work anymore". That is funny. It is strange that someone who learns from man can then work but when he learns from God, he can no longer work. What is the reason for that? This is it, you have to be skillful at feeling, at understanding it, and this is what Bapak told you about yesterday.

All the parts of our being with which we have been bestowed by God have to be exercised and made to work. Among them, your mind and your heart. So the intelligence, the thinking and the heart always need to be kept close to your inner self. Let it not be otherwise. 0nly at the times when you are receiving something from God, the sign of that is that the heart and mind are put aside.

When you receive the latihan, supposing that beforehand you were depressed thinking about this and that; thinking, for example, about your wife, or, if you are a woman, thinking about your husband; when you receive the latihan or when you are opened, it is certain that right away there will only be the feeling : "I feel satisfied, I feel alive, I feel that within myself there is nothing other than Life."

This you have felt for yourself. So, it is clear that Subud is not something based on stories but on proof. In every day language, the intelligentsia call it 'realistic'. In Islam there is also a picture or symbol for this expressed by the words: Zat, Sifat, Asma, Af'al. Zat is power. But power is not going to be visible or felt by second, third, and fourth parties if it does not have 'Sifat' ( attributes ). So Sifat is the condition. Till now, there are still many people who do not believe in the existence of God. Why not? Because it is just words. Believe what? That God exists. Yes, you believe, but your faith still vacillates. It cannot stop yet. It still swings from side to side .Is it this true or is that true?

We can only begin to feel, to know and to understand little by little when there is Asma - Zat, Sifat, Asma - Asma is the working. "I have faith that God exists because this earth exists. I believe that God exists because mankind exists. I believe that God exists because there is life around me. How could all this exist if there was not someone who created it? So therefore I believe". But this is still not yet 100%. It is still vacillating, but the vacillation is slowing down. - Earlier when we were still at the Zat, it was really vacillating back and forth ( Bapak makes the motion of a pendulum ). "Is there really a God?" Because man has greater faith in that wall than in God. At least that wall is sure because you can see it. So ( with Asma ), faith is already 75% but not yet complete. Af'al is proof. But people try to obtain that proof by way of ascetism, by way of meditation, fasting, denying themselves sleep and - they end up at the wrong address. Indeed, they become food for the satanic - the wrong address.

So then what? Just be ordinary. Indeed, God wills that we should just be normal. It's enough if you look to yourself in the right way. It is enough if you act with honesty, with goodness, joyfully, cheerfully, with openness and satisfaction. And how can you do that by searching? By going here, going there, looking for a teacher, looking for that certainty?

Zat, Sifat, Asma, Af'al. Man will be able to obtain that af'al, that certainty, if man truly surrenders to Almighty God and the basis of man's surrender to God is: Man Must Die. Don't be afraid of death.

Bapak has corroborated this, when Bapak received this which you are now receiving. At that time Bapak was coming home from taking a walk ( in the middle of the night ), because in those days Bapak had this idea of studying like other people do, and after studying he went for a walk so that what was in his head should not go on churning around. Having almost got home Bapak was amazed because suddenly he was surrounded by light as if it were the daytime. Bapak looked up and Bapak saw something like the sun falling from the sky towards Bapak - very odd! - If I just tell this story how can anyone believe it just like that? Well, as far as I am concerned, if you believe it that's alright, if you don't believe it that's alright too, since after all its importance is for me, it relates to my own needs.

So after this ( light ) fell on him, Bapak's whole body started shivering, and Bapak's heart was shaking. Bapak's understanding at that time was still the understanding Bapak obtained at school – for Bapak did have a certain amount of education. So he understood that this was what was called a heart attack, which nowadays is considered dangerous. If you get it this afternoon you will be dead by tomorrow morning. So it is dangerous.

Naturally, it seemed to Bapak a pity to die so soon, for even now at Bapak's age, if you were to ask him he would still say: "Well, I would prefer to die when all my grandchildren have got married." Bapak then quickly went home to his house, although Bapak tells you frankly at that time Bapak was not yet married. So it would have been a pity had Bapak died then for Bapak's future wife would not even had had a chance to meet him, but that is just a joke. So, I got home and knocked on the door and the one who opened the door was my mother. My mother looked at me - I was very pale - and said: "What happened?" "Oh, nothing." So I went in and shut the door. My house happened to be close to the place where I received the experience I just described. So I then lay down as if to sleep for if God willed that I should die, how was I to prevent it? I surrendered.

Having laid himself down and surrendered, Bapak did not die but Bapak saw the whole of his body full of light, full of radiance, from the tips of his toes to the ends of his hair; completely full. It did not last long, may be one or two minutes. Bapak was then made to get up, to his surprise, but he simply followed. After all, having already resigned himself to death, why worry if he is only being moved around by something he couldn't understand. Bapak stood up and walked, walked to the place which he normally used to study and there Bapak did Solat ( Muslim prayer ). Since Bapak is a Muslim his development was according to Islam so that it would not be foreign to what he already knew, what he had previously felt and understood. Had Bapak previously been a Catholic, or a Christian, then presumably he would have been awakened in line with the practices of a Christian. Being a Muslim, he was made to do solat. But he was made to do it in silence, and he still felt like going back to sleep. Having experienced that, brothers and sisters, I thought to myself, what is this? In other words I did not understand it at all. At that time Bapak was about 24 years old, not yet at the age for thinking of marriage, not yet.

It is this which Bapak now, not gives but passes on, for Bapak was given the understanding that it must be disseminated. Bapak was told: "It is not only you who are able to receive this and to understand it, but the whole of mankind". So it went on every night; every night Bapak received this latihan. So if you ask where did this latihan come from, and how, what Bapak has just told you is a description of it. And supposing you ask again: is there anything more to it? The answer is, yes there is. But it is not yet time for Bapak to tell you, we are simply not there yet. For example, take this kejiwaan zone meeting. Even this, like a tree which always bears more fruit, will bear more fruit, as we progress. Each time it will be more satisfying, but may be not yet this time. If one were to describe this meeting of zone councilors, including kejiwaan councilors, it is not yet truly bright, it is still rather dark. If you ask, I need to explain further. Even arranging the matter of the cost, brothers and sisters - after all arranging the cost is simply a question of money, isn't it? But even arranging the money, Bapak tells you frankly, is still messy. It is not yet smooth and not yet so fully taken care of.

On the other hand, if you were all really and truly Subud minded, and were really and truly aware in your Subud, then there would not be only one P.T. Widjojo building here and there would not be only one person who can make an enterprise. You would also do it in other places So it is clear, that the development of Subud both outwardly and inwardly does not depend on anything other than each one of you. And why are you not like that? It is because Subud has not yet truly become one with you.

Nowadays here ( in Indonesia ), they talk about spreading everything to the villages, like the army coming to work in the villages, electricity being brought to the villages, etc. In the same way Subud should spread to every part of you so that the latihan kejiwaan truly fills your whole being. Where is an example? No so far away: Bapak himself. Bapak can build this place so you can have a meeting in it because Bapak is one with Subud. Bapak's attitude is: if Subud disappears, Bapak disappears with it. If Bapak disappears, Subud disappears with him. If Bapak can build the S. Widjojo Center, it is because of Subud. Subud and Bapak, Bapak and Subud.

And not only that. Bapak will now build a hotel. This has not happened yet, but Bapak will do it. And later you will see it. It should be that when you hear of this, you say: "Bapak, may I be included in this and become one of the pioneers of this hotel project?" Bapak will say: "Alamdullilah, I accept you. But the fact is you have heard about this a long time ago. So Bapak simply leaves it to all of you.

We progress little by little. Why is it that Bapak did not talk about such things from the very beginning, brothers and sisters? Because Bapak himself needed proof. Bapak did not like to talk to others about something of which there was no proof. Zat, Sifat, Asma, Af'al. This is the af'al. Now how is it for you? Your Subud must also have proof. You have the zat, you have the sifat, you have the asma, but where is the af'al? That is the question. So one does not have to say, I am clever, I am capable, I am someone who is truly complete. Just demonstrate it. So these four elements are a pattern and a basis for us.

This has a certain similarity to the essence or content of what we nowadays call Pancasila. Panca means five and sila means principle or action, or rule of life. It is clear that a nation must be able to defend itself and must have a strong economy. It must have a strong code for its labor and also for its education. And so that its citizens may truly become strong it must be enveloped by the power of God. This is not foreign to Subud, for Subud is like that.

Brothers and sisters, Bapak is broadening the scope of this talk so that you are not left floundering and that you do not lack ideas to build your understanding. So if you have come here from your places of origin to report on things that you have experienced and have met with, which can be compared with the experiences of the other delegations regarding the development and progress of Subud in the matter of the kejiwaan, then this is what is important. So do not have the feeling that it is a pity to have to spend a lot of money in order to penetrate to the content of our brotherhood of Susila Budhi Dharma for that is of no importance. For the way whereby we are able to receive proof from God cannot be valued, brothers and sisters, not in terms of money.

Everywhere other people are still arguing about God. What is God? There are those who create models based on human life: God as a king, and then the angels and the prophets like the ministers and the high government officials they are just describing in the newspaper. Yes there is a similarity, but it is not like that, because God is not of the nature of man.

This then, brothers and sisters, is the essential part of this meeting where the councilors kejiwaan come and meet together witnessed by Bapak. The kejiwaan side is not something simple, on the contrary that is the main thing. There will be no Subud members if there are no helpers. So it is clear that the helpers are pioneers. A helper is a sort of founder, a helper is a sort of guide, a helper is a sort of educator. This is what is important for you as helpers who are occupying the role of councilors kejiwaan. Bapak having now said this, does it mean that you should quickly become perfect helpers such as Bapak has described? That is impossible. If you are in a hurry, the result will be that you go backwards.

This is why this latihan kejiwaan of Subud has been thought about and studied by our brothers and sisters abroad: how and in what way could they get to know its secret? They cannot, for man is man and God is God; man cannot exceed God. When you surrender that is in fact the right way. This is why in the Al'quran, it is certain that every sura ( chapter ) will end with the words "God The All-powerful" or "God The All-knowing", so that people may understand. For the influence of the nafsu may not exceed that which you possess. If it exceeds that it is dangerous. For example, the mind of man progresses and progresses until it can create this and can create that and finally, where is peace and tranquility today? This place is pacified, and trouble breaks out in that place. Peace is brought to that place and trouble breaks out over here, and so on and on. So then you ask: "When, Bapak, will there be peace?" That is up to God, the Almighty. What is important is simply that we human beings should act as well as possible, as human beings in accordance with what is willed by Almighty God, meaning we should be harmonious, and we should distribute what we have to the people.

This is what lies behind the principles of Islam which are described as follows: First, have faith in God; the Klaimat Shahadat: Ash hadu alla illaha","ill'Allah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadar rasul'ullah ( I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah ). This needs to be understood. It is without proof, but it is necessary, for starting with this, the rest will be understood from our journey ( through life ).

After the Shahadat comes the Shalat ( five daily prayers ). So when a person does Shalat, it is like a training because from this training he can eventually understand the Shahadat. Still this is not enough. Besides the Shalat there is the fast. The fast means that we train ourselves and acquaint ourselves with the strength of the nafsu which always motivates our heart and our feeling. Of course, among these motivators of the heart there is that which is good and that which is not. All that is in balance. Which one is stronger depends on man himself, whether the good is stronger or the one that is not good. But normally, brothers and sisters, when a person is learning that which is good he is dull. It takes him 10 years or at least five. But to learn what is ugly is very easy. Bapak has also done this, not only other people. For instance Bapak knows about gambling, what is called Ceki ( gambling with Chinese playing cards ). Bapak used to be good at Ceki. It did not take Bapak a week to learn how to play with the cards, three nights was enough. But to learn English, that is another matter. Ten words go in and ten words leave. Fifteen words go in and twenty leave. So even what Bapak knew before gets lost. Indeed, brothers and sisters, man is like that. Goodness comes from man and badness comes from him too. It is good to be human, it is also good not to be human. But, brothers and sisters, God always gives His love to man. Ninety nine times you are wrong; if once you can do right, the ninety nine disappear. But conversely , if you do right ninety nine times but once you do wrong, those ninety nine rights all disappear. So we need to be careful. But what is important is to remember is that God exists and has authority.

So fasting is supposed to be a training, but mostly what you are looking forward to is breaking the fast. "Wow, if I see a watermelon, especially a red one!" Ting, ting, ting, ting. 4 o'clock. "There are only two hours to go!" That is in general, that is, but I have experienced it myself, I don't need to ask you!

The fast is a training, a training in restraint - cutting down not only on eating and sleeping but also being close to your wife, being close to a woman. This also has to be restrained. You may say, "Oh, that is only a story"; but no, it is true. Truly there is a limit , a limit set by God.

But once he has fasted for 20 days continuously, without breaking it, then by the 21st day there are already signs within man that he is starting to change. Previously, he could look at a poor man and say to himself "We each have our own life. He has his life, I have mine. If I have enough, why should I worry about someone who doesn't." Or else, he enjoyed hearing what is bad. I also used to enjoy listening to people quarreling. Truly. I used to enjoy watching boxing. But nowadays, if there is boxing ( on the TV ), I immediately fall asleep. So it is clear that there is already an inner restraint. This is what we call the law of Allah or Kodrat. It is people who have that who are described, according to prophet Muhammad himself, as members of heaven. So this is the result of the fast. Do not imagine that it is something that falls down from above. Not at all. Such is the reality of the miraculous. Once one has experienced this, then comes the holiday ( Eid-ul-Fitr ). Eid-ul-Fitr celebrates that which has been received, celebrates that we have been able to experience the fast for a whole month and have been able to receive something which we need for our lives.

Thereafter it is said that one should go on the Haj to Mecca, where people come together from many places and relate what they have experienced, in the same way as you are doing here now: "What is your experience during the time that you have been a Muslim and have done the fast? The results I have received are like this and like this.

This is what goes on in Mecca, an exchange of understanding and experiences. So that each will have greater faith and more confidence of his Islam.

Here Bapak has been talking about religion, whereas our needs relate to Subud. In Subud the same thing is true. Having been through zat, sifat and asma, now the af'al. No matter what, you need the af'al, the proof. And the proof cannot be obtained from man to man, but only from God, through the stopping, through the sweeping clean of the nafsu which has authority within the being of each one of you. This is the importance and the purpose of coming into Subud and being Subud. You will not be able to give understanding to others through your words, because your words are only an encouragement to them to feel their own latihan kejiwaan for themselves.

The reality, which Bapak has been describing, of all this zat, sifat, asma, is not a problem for God, because God knows, for it is said that the hakekat ( the reality of worship ) is moved only by the power of God. But what about us? We no longer need to talk about God since God is All-knowing, but what about us so that we may know for a fact that we are truly able to receive teaching and grace and revelation from God concerning our life, in other words, the af'al of our actions? Since we are only able to experience proof in the ordinary way, that is, with all our ordinary parts, we have to find the proof through a demonstration to our own selves of some activity which we can clearly experience as providing for our lives.

You need not look far, just look at Bapak. Before Bapak set up P.T.S. Widjojo and other things like this building, etc., Bapak wanted to obtain proof. And the proof is here. So what Bapak has received has become real. It is this that has strengthened my faith in Almighty God, that God is Almighty. Because that which I have been told, I have been able to put into practice. That is proof. This is what is called Dharma Bakti ( duty and devotion ). Why? Because we have to some extent been able to practice Susila, Budhi and Dharma. Susila means all behavior. Not only four, five, six, seven, eight and nine kinds of behavior, but everything. If we take what is written in the holy books, there are 144 kinds of behavior. Budhi is the power of the miraculous which is within man's being and with Dharma we surrender this to Almighty God. This is our dharma bakti. If we put all this simply and concisely, what it boils down to is that we can feel God's love towards man who has faith in him through the fact that his life is taken care of.

It is clear, brothers and sisters, that being close to God, being loved by God, results in a human being becoming someone who has value, someone who has a good reputation. For God's love to man does not come direct from God to man but from man to man. If we describe it, a person who is fit to be loved by others is someone like prophet Muhammad or Jesus because their nature was that of people who deserved to be loved. Everything is based on reality and you have to be able to ponder carefully. Do not just accept the fact that you do your latihan every Sunday and every Friday and end up being able to 9o "oh, eh, oh, eh ...", but at the same time your life situation is not stable. That is still meaningless. Either you have not read enough or you have not done enough Or something. In any case, whatever it is, it is not enough. In order to reduce what is "not enough" , we have to use the means at our disposal. In religion we would do our prayers, our SHALAT, seriously, outwardly and inwardly. If we are in Subud then we must do our latihan also in the same way, inwardly and outwardly.

If inwardly and outwardly you are truly Subud matters of money will be very easy for you, truly. I can give you an example, and here are the witnesses ( Bapak points to Sharif and Raymond ). If a person is looking for a loan, he is supposed to go begging and humble himself and bow down as he asks for a loan. Yes, but not if you are Subud - of course this is Bapak's Subud, Bapak's nature . When Bapak is looking for a loan, the lenders come calling and offer it to him. It is strange. So now I understand better than I used to . If you wish to be happy, wish to be someone who has enough, make yourself into the kind of person who is loved by your fellow man. You can ask him yourself ( Bapak points to Sharif ).

Well, I hope it ( the hotel project ) will succeed, because Bapak does not like to be presumptuous. If it does not succeed, it does not matter. If today we have this here today ( the latihan hall ) and tomorrow it disappears, Bapak does not mind. For it is said that life and death are one.

Normally, unless you are very rich, you cannot borrow an extremely large sum of money. This person who will lend money to Bapak, will lend USS 14 million. Can you imagine? But do you think that Bapak says to himself "Wow, what would that USS 14 million look like if it were all changed into bank notes? It would fill this room?" In fact, Bapak does not feel any joy about it.

Such is God's love to man and the welfare of a human being who has received the blessing of God, who has received the Grace of Almighty God. Such a person will thereby have faith in God, not only when he is sick but he will even be willing to die. This, the prophets have said the same, such as prophet Abraham: "My love and my trust in God are greater than my love for my child." So that when he was ordered to kill his own son, he did it. But his son was not killed, and that is the justice of God.

Therefore, brothers and sisters, accept what Bapak has been saying to you all and you will experience an easier way forward in what you have to do, in coming together, in your meetings, in the progress of our brotherhood; for we are brothers, we human beings in this world.

So much for Bapak's guidelines in the kejiwaan. It seems that is enough and now Bapak will give guidelines regarding the organization, the regulation of human beings. For organization is the regulation of the jasmani, the regulation of the physical. We need to provide the wherewithal because without the wherewithal we will not be able to know each other in a way that is truly brotherly. For this reason we are told to undertake enterprise. Enterprise is an English word so those of you who are fluent in English should be able to understand it already. Only you have not yet understood its real meaning.

Its real meaning is that we have been given life in this world, complete with all the members of our body which we need and these we have to use. To worship God is necessary, but from the outer point of view, if we only worship God and do not work then how can we live in the world, and what is the use then of our eyes, our ears, our mouth and the rest? If we need to use them, then we have to make an effort so that we can live, as far as possible standing on our own feet. If we work we should work seriously and consider that what we are working at belongs to us.

That is not how things are today. Today we receive a new bus - it is so beautiful and polished but in three months it is all beaten up. Where then are we as a free nation. Where we should be able to improve things and carry out our responsibility in everything, as it all belongs to us. It is clear that when we talk about freedom, it is still only freedom to do as we like but not the true freedom where we value our own life. This is the way in which Bapak works when he sets up an enterprise; he asks all of you who truly possess the nature of pioneers to carry it out as if it were your own . Do not regard it as an employment, as from the point of view of a laborer. Let us never regard ourselves or feel as though we are hired labor. Never as long a we live. Try to think back that from when we were small, we already went to school, we already learned discipline and studied. How difficult and painful it is to study. You have to get up early in the morning, and go to school no matter how hot it is and how difficult the work is "Having finished the primary school, you go to school again and then again and when you finish all that you become a laborer. Having finished all that, how come you then only follow others? You hitch a ride with someone else who is looking for wealth. Yes, it is true you happen to live in a country which belongs to us ourselves, but still you still have the nature of a laborer. As far as this nature of a laborer is concerned, you cannot do anything about what has gone before, about what you have already experienced. But your children at least, get them used to being able to understanding and being aware of the fruits and the results of a person who works for himself.

I will give you another example - all this relates to the organization, not the kejiwaan - Adji, Bapak's grandson, he has finished his studies and has already obtained his masters' degree, but when he explained to Bapak what he has chosen to do he said, "Grandfather, I want to put into practice how a man can find out his own worth and the value of money and how a person feels when he works for himself standing on his own feet."

"You may do that" I said to him, "but still you have to obtain your degree first. Not in order to become someone with a high position but so that people will consider you to be a person who is truly educated." While he was studying, for many years he did not earn anything but now that he has his master's degree, he has bought a truck which he drives himself and looks for things to transport. He has been doing this now for two or three months. When he comes from Jogja, he carries coconuts. The coconuts from Wates fetch twice the price of the coconuts from here because their flesh is thick. After he had done two, three, four trips with coconuts, he realized that if he himself bought the coconuts in Wates they would cost him Rp. 150.000. He could bring them here and sell them for Rp. 300.000, or at least Rp. 250.000, with a margin of Rp. 150.000. And the cost of the trip is only Rp. 60.000 or 70.000. So he became both trader and driver; he is the carrier and he is the buyer and he owns the load himself. But he doesn't only drive between here and Jogja. He has been to Pasuruan, Surabaya, Dema Kudus and Pati. And now from here he takes rambutan to Wares. He buys a load for around Rp. 140.000 or 130.000 and sells there for nearly Rp. 250.000. And lately he said "Now I understand, grandfather, that if we act like this, we do not need to feel the effects of the recession."

Recession is a decline of the economy. So clearly, as Bapak has said, if the decline of the economy is caused by us, from human beings, then we human beings must be able to change it for ourselves. Find out how, arid then do it. And even more so for us, brothers and sisters, who are Subud people, close to their teacher. For God is the teacher.

If we can act like that, we can create enterprises that are large and we can also create them small, but what comes first is sincerity and trust. Truly, brothers and sisters, that applies in both these two different fields. A spiritual person must have the courage to face death, meaning he must have the courage to die if truly God wills it; but as organizers we must be like traders, that is, willing to face life and death - willing to face ruin because of our trading as well as good fortune. Because it is through this courage that a person can trade until he becomes rich. If a person wants to trade but is afraid that he might make a loss then it's better if he doesn't engage in trade. It is the same as a person who wants to look for work but before he applies for the job he is already afraid of being fired. In that case it's better not to work at all.

That attitude is inappropriate for someone who has been studying since he is small in order to be able to work later on and furthermore one who is complete in all the members of his body which he can use for whatever it may be. Even more so for us in Subud because we will later be able to know the worth and the value of each of the members of our body. Previously people didn't realize yet that it is not only their thinking that can benefit their lives but so can their feet: take Pele who was able to become a rich man thanks to his legs. Therefore, our legs can also bring us understanding this is only one of all the many different organs we possess. If your hands are truly alive you will be able to move like this and like this ( Bapak makes the movements of a dance ) - it is funny, from little things that you wouldn't think of, such as dancing the beksa ( a classical Javanese dance ) you can become a rich man. Through clowning you can become rich too. So any of these can become ways for benefiting your life as long as you do it seriously, even more so if you are in Subud.

So if you ask what is the use of enterprises for Subud, the answer is Subud really needs them because we still need to make Subud into an association, into a meeting place, for human beings which will bring welfare to the life of man. We need to create homes for old people who have no families, we need to provide places where children who want to learn but are handicapped can be taught and we still need to create hospitals.

You may say, well, but the state will do that. But isn't the state the same as ourselves? And therefore, if we can do that, it means that we also join in and also help and assist the state. If in our association we are able to do that in every place then governments will be open to us and we will not meet with any obstacles. Why? Because we have rendered service to society and to the government. This is it, brothers and sisters, why enterprises are extremely important for us as for society in general. Certainly we can do social work but social work which is not supported by resources will get stuck half way. Certainly we are charitable but we have to find the means whereby we can perform charity. Those who must be given help are those who truly need it such as people who are handicapped, old people who have no families, those who are sick, children who have been neglected and so on, they are the ones who have the need and to those we can give. But to give we must have money and the money is the fruit of our work.

So if we can do enterprises, brothers and sisters, from Jakarta the least we must be able to subscribe to SBIF is $25,000 to $30,000 US dollars a month At Least. Whereas right now even the thought of having to provide $6,500 makes you stagger. That is your own mistake.

Like this building; it is still alright but later, when it becomes dilapidated, the carpet the chairs will all have to be replaced. Who will buy the replacement? Surely it is those who use them, which means you yourselves. If you have no enterprises, how will you be able to do it? What is more, nowadays everything is expensive while salaries are even getting less. So you don't even have enough to eat, while the funds needed for all sorts of activities of the Subud membership such as holding meetings arranging this and that are many.

That is all, brothers and sisters, perhaps you agree that this is enough if you truly consider it. These are the guidelines that Bapak promised to give all of you and to the delegations, both in regard to the kejiwaan and in regard to the organization. If you are able to carry this out you will be able to fulfill the needs of Subud both inwardly and outwardly in this world and in the hereafter, in relation to the djiwa and the body. That is all, thank you.
