Talk To Men And Women - At Odeon Marble Arch

Brothers and sisters, as usual Bapak starts by greeting you in the Islamic fashion by saying Assalamu 'alaikum wa rachmatut-lahi wa barakatuh, a greeting which brings you closer; brings people closer to each other. In this case it brings you closer to Bapak and Bapak closer to you.

Brothers and sisters, Bapak is full of joy at receiving the welcome which all of you have given to Bapak, including the words of our brother, the Chairman of Subud Britain. Bapak truly feels their content within his being, but truly there is no difference whether it is you who come to visit Bapak or Bapak who comes to visit you. It is all the same thing. And both these actions signify and indicate that your closeness to Bapak and Bapak's closeness to you is something real and praiseworthy. Bapak prays herewith that this closeness may always have God's blessing and may always be protected by Almighty God.

It so happens that today we are still in the time or in the month which is regarded as a time that is very excellent for human beings; that is the month after the month of Ramadan in which we do the fast, which is a month set aside for people to ask each other's forgiveness, and this asking of each other for forgiveness signifies that this month we are in now is indeed a holy month, a month in which human beings can receive God's Grace, and a month in which God gives His Grace to human beings. This has the result that truly, at this time, through asking each other's forgiveness, and through the Grace of God which makes this possible, we can be freed from all our mistakes towards each other.

And taking this opportunity, Bapak himself who you know, as Bapak has always explained to you, is simply a human being and therefore is not free from mistakes and errors, so Bapak takes this opportunity to ask for forgiveness of all of you for any and all Bapak's mistakes that Bapak may have committed towards all and each one of you. And it may be that you also would like, at this moment, to forward your requests that Bapak should also forgive you for things that you may have done, so that thereby any distance or any obstacle or impediment between you and Bapak will immediately be removed and your state towards Bapak can return to how it was in the past. And also in between each one of you - any obstacles or any differences or any distance which has arisen between one and another of you for any reason can, by the Grace of God now, be annulled, be made to disappear, so that once again you can return to a state of harmony, peace, a state in which you really help each other and love each other as is God's Will for mankind as of old.

And once you have been able to return to the state that Bapak just described, it will then be possible for you to achieve something together in this group of Subud or Susila Budhi Dharma of ours; it will be possible for you once again to work and to achieve whatever is necessary among us - whatever has to be done, because it is the state of harmony between you, the state of peace and the state of cooperation which determines the success of whatever you do. Whatever you undertake, whatever you have undertaken, whatever you want to achieve will be successful providing you really cooperate, you really help each other and you really work as one in the direction of your common aim. If you can work in this way, if you can do what Bapak has just said - in other words, work without dissension, without differences of opinion and without pulling in different directions, then you will achieve success. And that is the decree of Almighty God who has created human beings.

This is something we are taught in the latihan kejiwaan for it is our experience in the latihan that God's Will is that we should be united, that we should be as one irrespective of race, religion or whatever other things put us in different categories or different groups. It is clear from our own experience that God's Will is that man should be united, that mankind - all its races and all its nationalities should be as one humanity, created by God and worshipping Almighty God.

If humanity can truly achieve this state of harmony that Bapak has explained that we have experienced in the latihan, then the state of the world will not be like it is now where human beings all over the world are concerned and are apprehensive about what the world holds for them.

If this can be achieved then this World can truly become a place of peace and a place that is holy, fit for the worship of Almighty God by human beings. The fact that this is so and that this is God's Will for man is proved by our latihan kejiwaan where all of you who have received the latihan, no matter what race you belong to, what nationality or what religion; when you are doing latihan you feel as one human being, as a human being facing Almighty God without any difference or any distinction between you and your fellow human beings around you.

And this is the proof for us, from our own experience, that humanity is one; one humanity facing one God.

So brothers and sisters, it is this content of the latihan kejiwaan, it is this experience in the latihan kejiwaan that has made it possible for it to spread throughout the world. It is because of this nature of universality that is experienced in the latihan that has made it possible for it to spread throughout the world to 78 countries where the latihan is done today.

And it is this same nature of the latihan that has made it possible for Bapak, for example, to visit you today and to be here with you so far from Bapak's home. And this proves that the latihan kejiwaan is not the fruit of man's mind, is not something that has been planned or thought out by human beings, but is truly a Grace and a Gift from Almighty God. It is a Grace that has been given by God's Will in the form of what we call the latihan kejiwaan. It is a Gift, it is God's decision to bring this Possibility to man today to worship Him in the way in which we worship in the latihan kejiwaan.

As Bapak has frequently told you, Bapak himself does not know, does not understand why it should be possible, at this time, for human beings to worship God, in the way that we receive the latihan kejiwaan so easily and so simply. But that is the fact. That is how it has come about.

Truly it is God’s decree that has made this possible and it also explains the nature of the latihan kejiwaan which Bapak has always made clear to you and which you have experienced yourself, that the latihan kejiwaan grows by itself, it grows naturally and spontaneously, like all the other creatures of God; like plants, like animals, it grows spontaneously, by itself according to God's Decree. And that is why it is not possible to develop the latihan with the heart and mind, for this is the work of Almighty God. It is God's decree and God's work which He has bestowed on us.

Our heart and mind we still need; it is very important for us to have them and to use them for the purpose of providing the needs of our life in this world. In other words, our heart and mind are the tools which we must use to forge for ourselves our life in this world, to provide for ourselves everything that we need. And in this also God is complete, what God has given us is complete and sufficient. God, truly brothers and sisters, is what we call 'consequent'. He has created us to have certain needs and certain necessities, and these needs and necessities God has fulfilled; God has provided everything that is needed by us to live in this world. To find those things, to bring them to fruition for what we need in our lives - that is the work of the heart and mind. And that is the meaning of the way human beings describe Almighty God with the words Rachman and Rohim, that is, The Merciful and the Beneficent, meaning that God gives to man everything that man needs for his life in this world.

Brothers and sisters, comparing your state before you were opened, before you received the latihan kejiwaan, and afterwards, certainly before you were opened you must have asked yourself, you must have considered carefully. "Is it really possible for me to obtain something, to experience something whereby I can feel God's power, I can really feel God's Power within my being, within my own feeling? Is it really possible to obtain such a thing without going through all sorts of training like meditation, like emptying one's mind, like practicing samadhi and so on?" - because this is what is normally taught or practiced by those who wish to achieve a contact with God's Power or with some inner reality. So this must have occurred to you and indeed that is the nature of the heart and mind. The heart and mind always would like to understand something more, to understand something that is not normal - that one cannot normally understand. The heart and mind would always like to go a little further than they are used to or a little further than other people in understanding things, in knowing things, in getting hold of this and that. And that, of course, is the nature of the heart and mind.

But the fact is that God is Ail Mighty, God is Ail Knowing, meaning that God is All Embracing. God is described as Huwal Awal and Huwal Ahir, meaning that God precedes all beginnings and God ends all endings. So because of God's omnipotence and All-Knowingness, God, in creating man, has created man complete - complete with everything man needs, and because God knew that man, in living in this world, would need instruments, would need tools to survive, so God bestowed on man something which we call the heart, mind and intelligence. This something is a tool, it is an instrument for man to organize his life in this world and to obtain the needs of his life, in order to be able to fulfill his needs; the needs of his physical body, to eat and to have shelter and all these other things. So it is with this heart and mind that man can work, can think, can evolve the various things that he needs.

But the nature of the heart and mind is that they are never satisfied. They always want something more than what they have today. So supposing that man has been able to make himself a car that can travel at 150 miles an hour, let's say. He will then think. "How can I make something that can travel faster than that - maybe several hundred miles an hour"? So that finally man arrives at creating an airplane, creating something that does indeed travel at many hundreds of miles an hour. But he will still not be satisfied. He will say. "How can I go further than this - how can I get something that will go further and faster"? So man eventually finds the way to create something that travels so fast that he can leave this earth and can go to the moon, and even to the planets, so we are told.

Actually, what man has achieved with his heart add mind is, in fact, God's Grace. It is by God's Grace and by God's Gift. It is clear that from the experience of mankind in this world that God's Gift to man is complete, that actually He enables man to achieve whatever he wants, whatever he needs in this world. God does not hold anything back. God gives man whatever he wants. God is complete in what He gives to man, and everything that man needs He can fulfill. But, as Bapak said earlier, man is never satisfied. The nature of the heart and mind is that they always want to go further than where they are. So man always wants to exceed what he is. This is the working of the nafsu. If today we find that £1 is enough, tomorrow we will find it is not enough any more, and maybe in a Year's time we will need not £100 but £ 100 million; and even that will not be enough. A few years later we will need more than that. So it is clear that this is the nature of the heart and mind, that they always wish for more, they always wish to go further than where they are now.

But God knows man Very well. God is completely familiar with man's limits because, after all, God created him. So because God knows man and knows his limitations, having created him and all that is within him, so God bestows on man something else - something beyond his heart and mind which he must use for his life in this world; and the something else that God bestows on man is something that enables man to put a brake on his heart and mind - something that enables man to step back from the wishing and the longing and the pressure of his own will, that is the nafsu. What Bapak calls the nafsu is that force in man which wants to exceed what he has. which wants to go beyond what he has. God has given man something with which he can put a brake on that. This something is what? Of course you already know what it is, but it is difficult for you to explain it or to express it in words. And this something is actually the latihan kejiwaan. It is this experience which we have receive, which bypasses the heart and mind and arises within us spontaneously, free from their influence. And this something, which we call the latihan kejiwaan, is actually the vibration or the movement of the Power of Almighty God. Of course, you don't yet understand it, you don't yet know what it is. It is something you feel, and you are aware that it is something spontaneous.

Now this is actually the effect or the action of this Power that envelops you both inwardly and outwardly. So that is why Bapak says: "Don't think about this, don't study it, don't cogitate about it or try and work it out, because this is something that arises spontaneously". It arises spontaneously from within your own being, without your own effort, without your own planning or without the use of your heart and mind. It is something that envelops you inwardly and outwardly and manifests within you as a movement that is completely spontaneous. This is the difference between God's Gift and the gift that you receive from someone else, or the understanding that you receive from someone else. When you learn from another person, or you want to transmit knowledge to another person you have to do it externally by talking to him. You have to express that knowledge and then it is absorbed by the person who wants to learn it, or vice versa.

In the case of God's Power it is not like that. The knowledge, the understanding, arises spontaneously within your own being, within your own understanding, and you don't know where it has come from. All you are aware of is that you suddenly understand something which you did not understand before. To explain this in terms that you can more or less understand, consider the kind of discoveries mankind has made of late, such as for instance substances which explode. If you look into it you will always find that the discovery came not by conscious effort, but at a moment when that person was surrendering - at a moment when that person was quiet in his feeling and his mind, had given up whatever he was trying to do, whatever he was looking for - then suddenly the understanding came. In other words, it came from beyond his own ability to construe or to think or to cogitate. And such is the nature of God's Gift to man that the understanding that God wants to give to man arises spontaneously within his understanding to the extent that you think to yourself, "Who has given me this understanding?"

This is the miracle, the secret of life, brothers and sisters, whereby man can know things before they happen, things that cannot normally be known by man's mind. And this can be experienced by ourselves in a way that is extraordinarily simple. What Bapak means by extraordinarily simple is that once you have received the latihan kejiwaan you can experience it anywhere and everywhere. Supposing you have just had your meal at home and you sit quietly after your meal, you will feel it. Or maybe you have just gone to the cinema and finished watching a film, and you get home and you go to your room and you sit quietly and you will feel the latihan, and wherever you are and whatever you have been doing or whether you go to the place that has been set by the group to do latihan twice a week, or whether you are home, or wherever you are, all you have to do is to be quiet and you will receive the latihan kejiwaan.

Where does this experience come from? It is beyond the heart and mind of man. From where is it? Just say simply - even though you do not know yet or understand it really - from God the Almighty. God's Gift enables man to surpass his own heart and mind because indeed it arises spontaneously from within and enables man to know and to understand something suddenly and spontaneously. Examples are the Messengers of God, that is, the Prophets Abraham, Moses, Muhammad, Jesus Christ, who have lived long ago. And if we look into the stories of their lives you will never find it said that these Messengers of God have studied somewhere, that they have taken a course or that they have studied under a teacher in order to acquire their understanding, their deep and wide understanding of human life. If you will read the story of Abraham you will never find there that he went to school and he studied for many years until he finally got this and that. You will find that he did not study, but he was able to know things that human beings normally don't know. He was able to know the future, he was able to know things that would happen which had not yet taken place. How could he do that? Through the Grace of God, based on the peacefulness of his jiwa, and through the peacefulness of his heart and mind. It is through his quietness, through his surrender, and through his total faith in God's Power, through his total faith that it is God who will guide him, that God who gives understanding to man and gives man everything that he needs. It is through this faith that the Messengers of God were able to receive their understanding.

So it is the same with us brother's and sisters. If you wish to receive, if you wish to feel the action of God's Power which we receive in the latihan, the condition for it, or the prerequisite is only that - to have complete faith in God's Power, to truly surrender to it, and to have a deep inner conviction that it is God who has created us, that it is God who understand what we need and can provide it. So Bapak has to tell you frankly that if, having received this and having practiced it, as you all have, if now you still complain, you still quarrel among yourselves, you still fight with one another and create a commotion, then really that is not God's fault - it is your own. It is simply your own fault, it is simply your own shortcoming or your own lack of understanding, for actually God has given you everything you need to avoid such tings and to be able to live your life in a state of peace and in a state of completeness. And God has put you in a situation where all you need is to use what is in front of you. In fact, God has provided you with everything that you need for your life. All you need to do is to use it for a time – because it is not. yours. These clothes that you wear - you were not born with them. When you were born you had nothing on. You came into this world with nothing at all - but now you have everything you need. Through the use of your heart and mind, you now wear a tie, you wear clothes. But are you going to take them with you? Not only these clothes you will not take - even your physical body, the physical body which you are using now will stay here when you leave.

So what is there to fight about? What is there to quarrel about? You have everything that you need. All that is needed now is to use it in the right way. The Understanding of this is actually the sign of the development within you of the latihan kejiwaan, because you may not understand it yet, but that understanding will come of its own accord, and that is the sign of your development in the latihan, and you will then understand and you will then acquire gradually this faith that Bapak talked about, this faith that it Js God who will guide you, both in this world and into the next, and this is the nature of God which is described as Rachman and Rachim.

Brothers and sisters, what Bapak has been telling you is not something that is impossible or something farfetched or something that cannot be, because we have God's word, that has been given through His Messengers, that God will always help human beings who ask for His help, who ask for His support. In other words God will always give His Grace and His help to those who act rightly, and therefore mankind has always been asked, has always been advised to act rightly. In other words to act as human beings in a human way, for it is clear that God has placed the material world, the vegetable world, the animal world, below that of man and also the human world. Those four worlds are the worlds that can be touched by the nafsu, the nafsu which is this will, this will of man which he needs to use in this world. These are the four levels of life where the nafsu operates, but this nafsu is not something that is there to tempt man or to disturb him, and will not disturb man, for as long as he acts rightly, for as long as he acts in the way Bapak said earlier - as a human being. If man can maintain his position as a human being, as the being that is the highest of all these worlds which exist together in this world, then the nafsu will not disturb him - on the contrary, it is there to help him, it is there as a servant.

And what is the meaning of acting rightly? The meaning of acting rightly is that man uses that which he has. Man uses that which is in this world for the right purposes, for that which is necessary. Just to illustrate what Bapak is talking about. Supposing you are a man and you are sharpening a knife. You sharpen the knife until it is really sharp. Now, clearly, the purpose of sharpening this knife is in order that you can cut with it. In other words to separate two material things, on from the other. Now, what are you going to cut with it, what are you going to separate with it? Obviously you will either cut up your food so you can eat it or cook it better, or you will use it to carve something, to make it nicer - to make a material object and make it better. Or there are many, many other things you can do with it. These are all things that are useful for your life, that will benefit you.

You will not use the knife to stick it into someone's stomach in order to harm him or to kill him. This is the difference. What are you going to use the things for, which you have, which come within your orbit? That is how man's free will operates.

That is where man has a choice. How he will use, what he will do with what he has.

So it is clear that man will not be harmed, will not be led astray by the nafsu so long as he does not allow the nafsu to influence him. But the problem is that that is very difficult for man. Man will always make mistakes. It is impossible for him always to avoid making mistakes, and yet it is difficult sometimes to believe that man will act wrongly, if you see a human being with his gentle heart and his gentle and astute brain which can understand many things and is quick and clever at knowing things. It is difficult to believe, when you look at him, that he can do wrong. And yet, he will certainly do wrong. It is not possible for man not to do wrong because of his nature, because of the way in which he has been created; that is, that within him there are all these elements, all these different elements. The only one who can avoid doing wrong is Almighty God. So therefore, there is only one way out. Be close to the Power of Almighty God. Stay close to the Power of Almighty God, for that is the only thing in this world that can avoid mistakes, that can steer you away from the mistakes which you are otherwise bound to make in your life in your relationship with what is in this world, that is, with the material, the vegetable, the animal and other human beings.

For example, there are many, many lawyers in the world, lawyers who really understand the law and understand what is right and wrong, and yet, it is well known that lawyers often themselves do wrong, often themselves break the law. So this is the reason why - in the case of Islam, the religion of Islam - there is one month of every year, one month in which human beings are asked to fast in order to repent, in order to atone for all the mistakes that they have committed in the other eleven months. And this is something that is really necessary for man, because of this fact that man always makes mistakes. Now during this month of fasting those who are members of the Muslim religion are told not to eat and drink during the day so that all day long they will not eat and drink, and the idea of that iv that during that time they try to be as free as possible from the influence of the nafsu.

But, eating and drinking is not enough. If, during that timer they allow themselves to become angry or allow the feeling of greed to affect them, or jealousy or any of these things, then the fast is of no use. So it is not only eating and drinking that must be avoided, but any influence of the nafsu that we normally experience. So the purpose of this is during that one month, from day to day to try to reduce, to try to avoid this influence of the nafsu. And it is said that providing man has patience, acceptance and trust in Almighty God, God will never disappoint him, and that is why it is promised, in the Muslim religion, that if someone has truly carried out this fast in the way it is laid down, then after doing twenty days of fasting God will grant him a gift - a gift which is signified by the word Qodar or Lailatul Qodar, meaning, the nights of the Power; and this Lailatul Qodar is not something that man receives from God like a gift which is thrown down from the sky which man somehow has to catch, but it is something that takes place within toe innermost recesses of man's being because the Power of God is very fine. God does not throw his gifts down from above, but God's Power is finer than the finest thing in the world, so it can penetrate wherever it wants. It is finer than the wind and cannot be felt by the. nafsu. It can penetrate into everything. So that this Lailtul Qodar is something that arises within man's being whereby his nature becomes improved from what it was.

So this person who previously loved to get angry or loved to oppress others or slander people of to despise people who were poorer than himself, suddenly and spontaneously he will find himself being more patient, feeling the needs of others and having a feeling of wanting to give to those who are not as fortunate as himself, a feeling of love for his fellow-man. In religion such a person is considered to have a high quality, he is called a member of heaven; "heaven" meaning goodness and purity.

This is something that has been given to man by Almighty God by way of the Holy Books, in this case the Al Koran, that is the Holy Book of Islam. And indeed God has given this kind of teaching or this kind of understanding to man many, many times over, actually in every religion, in every culture, in every civilization, God has given this guidance to man. But what is the use of so much guidance, of so much advice if man cannot put it into practice? What is the use if man receives advice 1000 times a day if he does not put it into practice? It is of no use at all. It is no use to be clever in theory, to be able to theorize about how man becomes better. It is like knowing how to plant a tree that will bear delicious fruit - but if you have never yourself planted one then you don't have the proof. The Afa'al shows that such a person has not yet been able to demonstrate what he has received from God. Such is the case of this lailtul Qodar - it is described in religion but where do we see its reality?

So from whichever direction you look at the latihan – if we consider it from this point of view, from that point of view, from the other point of view - it always fits with what exists in religion. Bapak isn't trying to praise the latihan - the evidence is there. Since how many hundreds of years have human beings been looking for ways to achieve harmony between the various religions and also ways to achieve harmony between nations and races; until finally people have created a huge organization at a cost of billions of dollars and called the United Nations, with the aim to bring accord to mankind. Bapak himself doesn't know why it has been unsuccessful so far, but looked at from the point of view of reality it is clear that man will never be able to achieve this, if it is not through the help of Almighty God. Therefore: stay close to God's Power; worship God so that the world may become peaceful and good.

So that there may be unity between men, so that their life in this world may be one God wills, full of wisdom and at peace.

So it's clear, brothers and sisters God's will is that mankind he at peace from the world till the next, but how can it be, with man's nafsu? But if we blame the nafsu for man’s inability to achieve harmony, that isn't right either. The nafsu which is under the power of the lower forces doesn't wish to pull man down from his rightful place or make him into a creature who has gone astray, not ~ all. They in fact want to serve man.

For instance a man who needs a mode of transport, before he has any money he finds a horse and cart more than adequate - if he has a little more money maybe he will get a bicycle. But if he has more he will decide that he needs a car - that's man's nature. But that is someone who knows how to organize himself, that is, he uses whatever is available and doesn't allow himself to overreach himself. Such is man's will, and the lower forces below the level of man are there to reinforce or support man's place.

So if the position is reversed it is man's own fault. It is the fault of human beings if they are influenced because they have allowed themselves to be influenced and they have allowed themselves to be led astray by things that were actually only meant to serve them. And the proof of this is that money is something that has no value until man gives it that value. So it is clear that the power of money is something created by man himself. If man does not give it that power it does not have any. So it is clear that the key to being protected from the influence of the lower forces is with man himself, is whether he uses them in a way that is beneficial or not. So it is man's own fault if he goes wrong. It is man's own fault if he lets himself be influenced.

Brothers and sisters, the way in which we can know – the way in which we can get to know the boundaries, the limits of the lower forces is through being close to the Power of Almighty God. So if you want to avoid the influence of the lower forces, if you want to avoid being misled by them, there is only one Way, and that is to keep close to God's Power. God does not prevent man from having what is good, from having what is nice - on the contrary. If a man can be rich and have a Rolls Royce God will be happy - God will be happy because that man is happy. But the important thing is, what does he use it for? How does he use it? So if man's attitude is that he will use whatever is available for what he needs, then it will not lead him to any harm or any difficulties. But if, on the other hand, man wants to go beyond what he has - if he wants to reach beyond what he is, to Something else, then - that is the result of being influenced, and if he has allowed himself to be influenced then he is in danger because then his actions will deviate from what is right. So that is not the mistake of the lower forces or the lower powers. Their wish is only to serve man and to provide him with what he needs.

So the mistake that man makes is only in misusing the wealth of this world, but for man not to misuse it is impossible if left to himself. If you wish to avoid misusing what you have in this world the only way is to keep close to God's Power, and the thing you have to keep close to is that vibration, is that movement that arises spontaneously within your being which you experience in the latihan. So it is only by keeping close to that in your everyday life that it is possible for you to avoid misusing that which is in this world.

Actually what Bapak has explained to you just now is already very deep, and is already very important, and all you have to do now is to use what you have. All that is left for you to do, apart from just keeping close to the latihan kejiwaan, is to simply use what you have, to simply use it. For example: to illustrate what Bapak means. If you are a woman and you have things to make yourself look beautiful, just use them for that. If you are a man and you have nice clothes and you want to look handsome, just use your clothes. But do not claim to be handsome, do not claim to be beautiful. In other words, use what you have but do not let it influence you. Use what you need for your life but do not fall under its influence so that you make claims for yourself. You claim to be this, or you claim to be that. Nothing that you have is permanent. You will not take it with you into the next world. It is something you have for s Short time. So never give too much importance to this physical body. Supposing every day you rub cream into your hands to make them look very nice and very fine and very soft, don't sit and say "Oh, how wonderfully soft my hands are", and don't fall in love with them because one day you will be without them. What you should say to yourself is. "How long will I still have to use this? How long will I still have this?" Because there will come a moment when you will have to leave them behind. So remember always that this is a temporary thing that you have with you, that one day you will have to leave it and you have to prepare for that.

So in short as human beings in this world there is nothing here that we can hold onto, nothing firm that we can hold onto in this world. What we can hold onto firmly is only what God gives us and therefore we have to accept that and we have to understand it. Actually in order to be aware of this and to know it, all you have to do is to be attentive to what is going on within add outside yourself in your everyday life. But why is it that we are not attentive? Why is it that we live our lives without paying attention? Now, in order to teach yourself to pay attention, this is why Bapak has advised you to practice this in the course of your everyday life, and this is what Bapak has called enterprise. So when Bapak talks about enterprises, when Bapak talks about doing enterprises besides doing the latihan Bapak is giving you an exercise, a training, to train yourself to be attentive in your everyday life.

Enterprise is an English word which in Indonesia is translated as Usaha, in other words work - effort. In this world we have to make an effort to stay alive, and it is this effort that Bapak calls a enterprise. Now there are many different kinds of enterprise. You can work for the government. That can be an enterprise. You can work for a big organization. That can be your enterprise, of course in those situations you are only there as an assistant to someone else, an assistant to a big corporation or something. But that itself can be an enterprise. In other words, in that situation you can still exercise this closeness to the Power of God and pay attention to what is going on around you.

So brothers and sisters, some of you may ask. "Why is it that in Subud which is, after all a spiritual movement, why do we talk about enterprises? Why do we have to have enterprises?" Bapak has to explain to you that even though you are a member of Subud, you are still living in this world and men have been put in this world not only to die, but to live, and to live you have to live with what is in this world. So therefore you cannot avoid working in this world, you cannot avoid what is in this world for as long as you are here. But the idea of enterprise what Bapak means by enterprise is a way of checking for yourself, a way of testing yourself as to how far you have received God's Gift, how far you have received God's Blessing and God's Grace in your everyday life. That is the purpose of enterprise It is a means of checking. It is a means of testing yourself.

So brothers and sisters, once you have received this latihan kejiwaan, actually there are thousands of ways for you to learn to earn your livelihood. There are thousands of ways of life open to you. All you have to do is to choose one that you like, because truly there are not one hundred, not a thousand, but thousands of ways in which man can earn his living, and through which man can live in this world. So all you have to do is to choose one and then to practice it in line with what Bapak just told you. And if you can do that then you will truly be someone who makes the most of what God has given him, who puts into practice God's decree on being created to live in this world by Almighty God.

So Bapak will finish his talk now and Bapak will, of course, continue with it on the next occasion when we meet together, so for this reason Bapak hopes that you will not feel disappointed if Bapak hasn't talked for very long today but Bapak will continue at the next occasion and will continue to do so for as long as Bapak is here with you in England.

That's all. Thank you very much.
