Bapak has been speaking about the meaning of man's worship of the One God. Now Bapak will go on to explain the use of the training ( latihan ) you are doing and receiving. The real use of your doing or receiving the latihan is that all of you, while still in your life here, can become aware of how life will be later on, after death. But do not forget, even when we have received how it will be later on after death, we are still on this earth, and we must live here for a while. Do not forget that we have to strive and behave and live in the way people do in this world. So we should use our coarse physical members, our thinking mind, our feelings and our will, because these are necessary for us to attain happiness in our life on earth. So, in our life on earth, we should use our mind, our will, our desires and feelings for what they can do. And, on the other side, we can receive God's gift, which we do not need to understand with our thinking, for it is God's work, and has been given to us. Later, God Himself will provide for our need, as human beings, to be able to continue our life after death.
You yourselves have received experience of this. When the soul ( jiwa ) is working, the thinking mind cannot be of use. If we use our thinking in the latihan, the work of the soul will stop. This really shows us, or shows you, that we - our thinking mind, our will and our desires - do not need to meddle in spiritual things or in the awakening of the soul. We ourselves are able to grasp the reasons for this and take them into account. Such is God's grace to us that we are given freedom in our way of thinking, in our way of using our thinking, feelings and desires for living in this world. And, for our life in our soul, our life after death, I, and we, are also given something beyond our thinking mind. So our thinking, will and feelings should have no difficulty whatever.
You yourselves are able to feel this. As you may be aware, the work of our soul and inner self is deeper within us than are our thinking, feelings and will. We cannot possibly participate in that work with our thinking. When you are asleep, for example: even though you may be supremely clever, in your sleep you forget everything. This is even more the case when, later, you face death. Before your death, you will not remember a thing. Your memory and your thinking will go blank. You will not even be able to see your children and your wife clearly when they come near you. You yourselves can gauge from this the limited strength of your frail physical members.
When a person is approaching death, he already begins to forget. He is empty of all his aspirations and everything he used to think about and imagine. He used to have certain notions: 'Heaven is like this; hell is like this; the path to God is like this,' and so on. But now, as he approaches death, it all begins to fade. Finally, at the threshold of death, these ideas completely vanish from his memory and from his awareness. And, at that point, if the person still has a voice to speak, he asks for a gift from God. He asks for help from the One God. He asks that he may be given the way, that he may be opened up and freed from his mind, which has submerged and forgotten all the things it used to think about. But, during his life, he did not receive the something Bapak spoke about earlier: that is, something that is within our deepest inner feeling, and deeper than our deepest thought; something that moves our being so that we are able to move beyond our thinking mind; something one might say is beyond the scope of reason.

With the growth and awakening of your soul, which has been asleep, and has not moved for so long, later, when the moment of your death comes, you will be free from the domination of the thinking mind. For, the greatness, the loftiness and the understanding of the thinking mind is limited; its limit is the grave. Then after the mind has stopped, your soul, which has arisen and grown, will receive, and continue your journey to the true human world you hope for.
Also, it is our good fortune that not only can our soul take over from our thinking mind in the life after death, but the growth of our soul will of itself purify and give health to our being, both the coarse and the fine. For example, not only will our blood, our flesh, our bones, and so on be restored to a good condition, because of the growth of the soul; our heart, our brain and thinking, which formerly were not good - because human beings in this world, whether they like it or not, are usually influenced by conditions to think strange thoughts and to desire strange things - all this, too, will become good again, because of the growth of the soul.
Naturally, if, because of the growth of the soul, our body, this coarse flesh and blood and so on, becomes healthy, and our heart becomes good and mindful of God, and our thinking becomes good and clean and really obedient to God, a freedom will be created within us in our human life on this earth. Thus, in religion they say that religion leads to well-being and happiness in life: people who follow a religion are not expected to behave thoughtlessly, in a way that deviates from humanitarian conduct. They are required to behave well so that they may be safe and happy in their lives. The prophets also advised, and the Prophet Jesus himself also advised people, 'If you have trouble or difficulty in your life,' he said, 'turn to God.' And when he was asked, 'Where is God, that I may turn to Him?' he said, 'God always follows you, is always in you, but not in your heart and thinking.'

Bapak could describe it like this, to give you a picture: the receiving you receive from God eventually causes the enlargement of your human soul ( jiwa ). And as the human soul enlarges, it becomes wider and bigger than everything that is in us. If our human soul is greater than everything that is in us, it means that our soul is more powerful than I am, more powerful than our whole being. So, our soul is more powerful, and knows more than our brain, our feelings and our will as human beings. And the human soul gets bigger and wider, until it is able to reach and touch places beyond the sphere of man, for example, heaven and other places.
That is how it will be if the soul has widened and become large because it is clean and cleared of everything that oppresses it. But before that can happen, you first have to clean the things that oppress it. You have to clean all that has control in the human heart, brain, sex and inner feeling. All of that has to be cleaned first. But you won't come to what Bapak has been describing, and become wide and big immediately. You start gradually, little by little. As for the way it works within you, children, you have to let go of your thinking, wanting and desires, so that your inner being can work in a way that is not always disturbed, and its work can be quickly and easily completed. In short, just surrender to God whatever is working in this spiritual training ( latihan ). It is God's work, not our work. We only receive.
So, Bapak hopes that, outside the latihan, you will not sit around and keep thinking, 'What was that latihan I just had? I went like this, and I went like that. What does it mean?' Don't trouble yourselves. Outside the latihan, do your work. What work? Work in the office, work as a doctor, as an engineer, or whatever work you do. It is not necessary to keep thinking about what you have received, because when you think about it you disturb the work that is going on within your inner feeling. So you are not yet free. Give your inner feeling the freedom to work directly. Later on, you will receive by yourselves, you will always receive, receive . . . God knows all.

What we receive in the latihan is only God's work, the work of God's power. It is not man's work. Truly, it is an immeasurably great release for those who have received it. Such is God's love for human beings. Such is God's grace to human beings. Such is God's help to human beings. For humans are indeed weak by nature. If it were not for God, there is no way it could happen. So we are cherished and loved by God.
Do not think about this. Direct your thinking towards making a living. If there is such a field of study as profiteering, for example, don't try to apply it in this area - do it in the area of money. If you try to make a profit from this, it won't work.
In this spiritual ( latihan ) we have been given our freedom, so let us not use our thinking to that end. It is God's work. We only receive. However, there are some people who say, 'But I will become passive, Pak, if I only receive. I'm a human being after all.' That's right, but this is towards God. You should not be passive towards material things or towards your own kind, that's different. So it is appropriate for us to be passive towards God, but we may not be passive towards each other, you towards me. Towards the One God we should be passive.

All of these worlds have been ordained by the Power of God, by the mighty force which descended from God into the being of man, free from human thought and free from all human passions which exist in the being of man and were referred to as his 'brothers'.
That is why the prophets - and for you, Jesus - never mention any particular power ( nafsu ) but keep their eyes wholly and solely on the power of the one God; for the nature of the prophets is such that it is a living symbol of the fact that their personalities are beyond all personal powers of man. Tradition associates Jesus with the color green, the meaning of green being freedom from all influence.
It is a custom among school children ( in certain countries ) that before being accepted as students they should first be "greened"; this means that a person's green garment should be opened so that he should become accessible to influences and he should now possess personal power or desire ( nafsu ). The meaning of green is thus that a person is not yet able to make use of his influences or has no nafsu yet and is free from external influences.
As regards Jesus, he had not suffered the influence of anyone else, nor had he influenced anyone else, but he was taken up entirely with the worship of God.
For this reason Bapak always hopes that you may simply accept whatever you receive in the latihan, and not speculate about it, nor attempt to find the best way yourself; but you should simply accept with your emotions calmed and pure, so that you may become aware how the great and lofty power is at work within you.

Bapak tells you the truth: God is truly just. God is truly All-wise and All-just. But maybe there are many people who say that God is unjust. And who says that God is unjust? Those who are poor, those who always have difficulties in their lives, those who are always unfortunate in not getting what they want. And why do they say that? Because their desires are not fulfilled. So they say that God is unjust. 'Why doesn't God give to me? Why does God give just to those rich people, to those important people?' they ask. But God is All-just; and in God's justice He has no favorites but is the same for all humankind. God has freely given everything human beings have for their well-being. So the fault now lies in those human beings themselves. They possess all the tools they need within themselves, and in all the parts of their being. What they have is truly complete - so why can't they use it? The mistake is theirs.
In the same way - not that Bapak compares himself to God - Bapak has given you all freedom to open others and to do latihan with them, in order that you should not always have to run to Bapak: 'This or that - Pak Subuh; this or that - Pak Subuh.' No. It is equal sharing; so you all share in this. It is really God's will that everyone should share in the joy of life and that everyone should share in nobility. Truly, human beings are created as one united human race, with one God.
But, Bapak repeats, people don't change; that's how it is. Bapak keeps saying that. So then, let us do things differently. Since you are putting pressure on Bapak - how would you like to arrange things? It simply remains for Bapak to follow whatever you all want to do. Do you want to make a stricter rule? But don't forget that strictness comes from your mind and your own self-will. So, whether he likes it or not, Bapak has to come down to your level to follow your stricter measures.
If that's what you want, Bapak can arrange matters accordingly. If, for example, some helper or other member wishes to go off and open people on his or her own, without reference to their group, everything they do in this way is outside the responsibility of Subud. These people are allowed to open others, but they should be reminded that they ought not to use the name of Subud in their activities. They are allowed to open people because it is a good thing to do; although such people always wish to keep power in their own hands, yet the aim is a good one, for they bring people to stand before God, who alone knows everything.
So, if these stricter measures are necessary for us, then helpers who carry out their duties in a way that is not in accordance with what has been agreed regarding the work of helpers will not be dismissed, but their actions are not the responsibility of the Subud group. All that they do is their own responsibility, and they must not use the name of Subud.

God precedes everything that has ever been created and God will be after everything has passed away,]4 which means that God’s power envelops our self and our human world both inwardly and outwardly. As for our thinking mind, our heart and desires, we use them and work with them in the normal way while we live on this earth, for the welfare of our lives with our families.
In this way we will become human beings who are free. Free, because our mind and desires do not work and take action towards imaginary ends, but towards ends we should be able to work for and aim for. And this freedom of our whole inner feeling, our mind, our heart and desires, will of course bring about the good order, well-being and harmony of our whole inner feeling. And this will create the health we all hope for.

It is indeed the will of God that human beings on earth should have one aim, and live in harmony in their society. That aim is towards happiness in life and the perfection of our worship of God, who is One for all of humankind. And since we all have one aim and one God, it should be possible for us to be united with one another in our actions. In this way our life on earth will become harmonious, and we will not feel anxiety and doubt because of being threatened by others, as is the way in this world now.
Therefore Subud, the Subud association, follows the true way in accordance with God’s will; for it is God’s will that, as well as worshipping God, human beings should live in harmony, since such harmony will also bring peace, freedom and happiness. For instance, you may worship God sincerely but not have enough to eat. Worse than that, someone else may take your food. You may live in an unpleasant place, where you get wet when it rains and get hot when it is hot, and you are often molested by animals. If you live in a city, you may be hampered by other problems. Of course you want to worship God sincerely, but because your salary does not enable you to meet your daily needs, your worship of God will naturally be less wholehearted.
So, although you may consider that worldly things are not very important for your worship of God, in fact they do interfere. That is why it is important that we fulfil our worldly needs; and of course if possible this should apply to the whole world. We will be able to do that only when we are truly in harmony, when we are truly one in heart, one in our feeling. Certainly in the latihan we have already experienced that our souls are united, so we can truly worship God with one accord.

And in accompanying the latihan, the helpers should not follow their own ideas, according just to what they think. Please understand that the latihan is a training that comes from the power of God, which awakens the self of a human being. And this awakening of each person by God’s power is in accordance with their individual capacity. So one person will do latihan like this, and another like that; there are those whose latihan is strong, and those whose latihan is quiet. The helpers need to leave them alone and not restrain them; do not try to make them follow your ideas or feelings. In other words, the helpers should leave them completely free to follow the movements that arise within them. Otherwise they will lose their individual freedom, and their latihan will become like meditation, which is quiet. That would deaden their inner feeling, their senses and the life of all the parts of their body.
You need to understand that if a person has a strong latihan, it will not go on forever. That is the nature of their heredity; among you there are those who have inherited a coarse nature, those who have inherited a fine one and those who are half coarse, half fine. A person’s latihan shows the content of their individuality and their capacity. So it is inappropriate for the helpers to restrain them; let them follow whatever they receive. The only thing you have to watch for is that they do not leave the room in a state of latihan, where they might then be seen by members of the public, by people who are not Subud members.
For those whose latihan is strong and coarse, that is what their soul needs and what God wants for them, so that with this coarse latihan, their individuality can be freed from the coarseness within them. Once this coarse nature is erased from their individuality they will be fine and good. That is what will happen, brothers and sisters, so do not restrain the movements or behaviour of the members in the latihan, then they can quickly be freed from the coarse and bad characteristics they have inherited.

So it is clear that through the process of purification and change that God works within you, guiding, leading and educating you, you will become a person whose heart is firm. This fits very closely with what Bapak has described – perhaps not here – as the state and individuality of the prophets or messengers in times long ago.
So when your heart feels downcast or trembles, it is a lesson to teach you, so that when you are in trouble it will not affect you. It is God training you to make you into human beings who are firm, who obey God and surrender to God no matter what happens.
Besides that, there is something else that Bapak needs to tell you. Sometimes your breathing is also trained. Breath is normally considered to be air; air that goes in and out to provide something for people to breathe. But in reality the air that constitutes human breath is different from the air out there.
Sometimes, Bapak is about to sleep – he is sleepy and wants to sleep – and his breathing goes. It stops. Bapak is just quiet. ‘What is this? I want to sleep and it stops. Am I going to die?’ But the understanding is already there: ‘You are not going to die, you really need this. Your breath needs freedom too. It too needs to be purified, so that it too can become your companion on your journey to heaven, on your journey upwards until you are before God.’ That is how it is.
Therefore Bapak advises you all, in case there are times, perhaps not now but later, when your breath disappears for a time – for quarter of an hour, an hour or, if necessary, for two hours – that you should not worry. Do not feel confused, for this is indeed the path of purification, the path of the soul, the path of the soul’s development that you all will experience in Subud.

Even just with something that people consider to be good: they cannot know what the limit is of that goodness. It is the same with something that people consider to be bad or ugly. Human beings cannot know how far that badness can go. This is because people determine goodness and badness with their heart and with their thinking. But if you ponder on this and think deeply: if something is good there is bound to be something even better. Even if they say that something has reached the very limit of goodness, still there will be something that is better, and so on; the human intellect cannot find where the limit of goodness is located.
And the only One who knows goodness and its limit is the One Almighty God. For God is the best of all that is good; the first of everything that was at the beginning and the last of all that will be at the end; the outermost of all that is on the outside and the deepest of everything that is inside. The path towards God – and the limit of human ability – is in the atmosphere of, or the moment when, a human being is empty of the influence of desires, heart and thinking. That is the reason why, when we do the latihan, we simply surrender to God everything that we have within us, inwardly and outwardly, our physical body and our soul. This is because, no matter what, while we are still human beings our body and our soul, our outer and our inner parts, are filled with the influences of this world – the small and the large, the strong and the weak – which always envelop us; all that we see, hear, smell, feel, think, pay attention to, and so on.
That [surrender], which was also possessed by the messengers of God whom you have heard about, is an essential condition for us. If you do not have that, if you do not hold on to that – in other words, if you do not have a feeling of patience, acceptance and surrender to God – then you will certainly not feel like doing the latihan diligently, because you will still be disturbed by your intellect and your heart, which would like to know what the latihan is.
For indeed there are many thinkers who constantly think about God and theology, and construct all sorts of theories and systems in order to discover the way human beings can come towards God. But – as Bapak said earlier – there is no way that a human being will be able to discover or to find that, because the path to God is through freedom from all influences. But people still try to practise what they consider to be a path to God in a way that is subject to influences; that is, by using their self-will and their intellect.

Brothers and sisters, as you know and have often heard Bapak say in his talks, the movements you receive in the latihan are initially felt in the inner feeling as a kind of vibration, which is commonly called inspiration. Why is it called inspiration? It is because this vibration comes as a result of stillness, quietness, or emptiness; that is, freedom from the influence of your desires, which create confusion and disturb your wish to worship God. Therefore you very much need to adjust yourself to what you receive in the latihan; in other words, to the guidance and education of God, which leads towards the excellence of human life and human behaviour. For in that way you may become praiseworthy and fit to become examples for society.

Thus it is clear that what brings it about and what awakens us, so that we are able to do the latihan in freedom from the influence of the passions which make their home in the heart and mind, is not there because we bear the name of Subud ( Susila Budhi Dharma ) but because of the grace of God Almighty. As for the name Subud, that name is only an ordinary symbol, which indicates our status as beings who, by the grace of Almighty God, are able to worship Him according to His will.
Furthermore, since by now we have become many in number, it is right that we should unite together in harmony so that the members who are distributed almost all over the world may become closely connected one with another, and it is this fellowship and harmony of the members that we call the spiritual brotherhood of Subud ( Susila Budhi Dharma ).
Supposing someone were to say that he is able to do the latihan without being in Subud, it will be clear that he can only do it because to begin with he became able to do the latihan after being opened, or at least after being in frequent contact with an opener.
What he means is that he can just do the latihan kedjiwaan without necessarily being a member of the spiritual brotherhood of Subud. The situation is simply that he does not want, or no longer wants, to be a member of the spiritual brotherhood of Subud.
But if it is not like this, that is, if his claim that he is not a Subud member concerns his latihan, then he has certainly long since departed from Subud both inwardly and outwardly, and is exercising by using some method of his own.
In other cases the splitting of a group is caused because one of the helpers feels that he disagrees with companions, both in ordinary social matters and in working for and talking to the members. This is, in fact, only an impulse of the passions, so that he does not hesitate to maintain his own opinions still.
Indeed, brothers and sisters, these passions which reside in the heart sometimes can still easily arouse the inner feelings of someone who feels himself to be cleverer than other people. Therefore it is very necessary for the helpers that they should have a feeling of patience and love towards their fellows, and if there is a difference of opinion within the community, the right thing to do is to have a latihan at once, so as to receive the indications from within which are made evident in the latihan.

Bapak does not praise and boast about the latihan and glorify it. No. What Bapak said is that Subud is one of the many gifts that God has given, that have come down to human beings. Subud is not the only one. But from what Bapak just told you, the latihan is a privilege and a boundless grace, because you are able to experience again and receive deliverance from your sins during your life on earth; whereas those who have not yet received the latihan will experience them after death, and they cannot deny or escape from their sins. You can receive deliverance at this time, even though, for instance, you may have to go through a crisis for three months. If it were Bapak, he would choose to go through a crisis, especially if it were just for three months. Even if it took three years, he would be willing to go through it.
If you have that attitude, you will not be afraid of a crisis; the benefit being that if you are not afraid of a crisis you will not experience one. So do not be afraid of a crisis. If you are afraid, then you will experience one, because a person who is afraid lacks surrender and acceptance, and is not willing to let go.
In fact this deliverance is something we certainly have to experience, while we are still alive as well as after we die. Once we are dead, things cannot change. Change can take place if we experience it while we are still alive. It is possible for change to take place after we die, but we cannot say whether it will happen quickly or slowly or at all, for it will depend on our descendants. It can take place if we have good descendants. But if they are bad – what then?
[The father of] this contractor had been relying on his descendants. Since he was afraid of a crisis, he chose not to do the latihan now. He preferred that his sins should be redeemed later, after his death, by his children. So whereas the father ate sand, when his son became an even bigger contractor, he not only ate sand, but also wood and other materials.
If you give this serious consideration you do not need to be afraid for someone who is in crisis, for the crisis may give the person who experiences it freedom from all sins before they die. This was evident when this member’s crisis was over: his latihan consisted of doing dhikr,4 whereas before when he did the latihan he used to curse. There was nobody there he was angry with, but he would just go on cursing, ‘You insolent creature!’ and so on.
There was once a Subud member who received a premonition that the time had come for him to die. Before he died, he said, ‘Brothers, it may be that my days of having fun with you are over. I shall soon die. It is the will of God that I return to the place assigned to me.’
Among those who heard this there were some who believed him, and others who did not because he was a man who liked to joke with them. Before he died he invited his friends to come and talk with him, but his attitude and his behaviour were already different. ‘There is no one who is free from faults,’ he said. ‘Just count up how often I have offended against you, and you against me. Therefore, forgive me for my mistakes. Beat me, if need be, I will accept it. If you do not beat me, I will be grateful. Yes, there remains nothing except sincerely to ask your forgiveness. If there is anything I have done wrong, brothers, please put it right.’
When they had finished their meal he said, ‘It is already late, brothers. Please go home now, and sleep well!’
One of the men was a good friend of his and said, ‘I do not want to go home, I would like to stay here.’
‘Very well. Sleep here, but not in my room as usual. Sleep in another room.’
In the morning the man, who usually got up early, was not yet up. So his friend began to worry that what he had said the night before might really have come true. He knocked at his door, entered, and found his friend was dead.
Some among his companions said, ‘How can that be? He was quite healthy and now he is dead. It is very sad.’
That is how some spoke. But others had a different view: ‘It is beautiful. I myself would like to die like that.’ Yes indeed, people differ in their views.
This incident shows that this man’s former conduct, which was considered sinful, had been redeemed, had been annulled, after he had received or experienced a crisis. So some of the older people said, ‘If it is like that, I would like to have a crisis.’ There were even some members who became addicted to having crises.
This tells you something about what happens in the Subud latihan.

God wants human beings constantly to turn to their inner self, constantly to sense their inner self. But people do not do that. More often than not people say that they are looking for the path to God, they say that they are worshipping God, but instead they make their heart and feelings dependent on whoever is said to have found the way to God.
Understandably, you … or rather, those people, believe that they can follow the same path, that they can do the same things as were done by whoever told them about or revealed the path to God. But in fact that is impossible. Every human being must find his or her own path. As evidence of this, when someone dies they cannot share their death with anyone else. So, when a person dies they are buried alone; it is not possible for one grave to be occupied by two or three people, for example.
And the fact is that no two people are alike, whether it is in the way they feel, or the way they think, or the way they feel inwardly, or the way they behave or act. This is why religions do not set out methods or doctrines to find the way to God; they just require that their followers should have a good character, that they should behave well and that they should have positive feelings. For instance, they should act with humanity, help people who need help, care for people that need caring for, and as far as possible they should not restrict or disturb other people’s freedom and happiness.

Why do some of you despair and not know what to do in life? Well, your situation can be likened or compared to the life of a captive animal. Take a bird that has spent its whole life in a cage. Take a horse that has spent its whole life in a stall. If that bird is freed from its cage, if that horse is freed from its stall, neither the bird nor the horse will survive. The problem is that they are used to being cared for; they depend on the person who looks after them. You are in the same situation. You depend on and rely totally on ways of behaving that you have acquired, that you learnt to do, using your heart and mind. That is why most of you constantly, or for much of the time, feel hopeless. The problem is that for your whole life you have been fettered and shackled by the pressure of your heart and desires.
That is the problem. So, because the latihan is willed by God, your heart, your mind and your desires do not take part, they do not function. If they got involved, the heart, mind and desires would just block the life of your whole inner feeling – that which is able to lead you through the gate to the road to freedom in a way that fits your individuality.
For example, if your hands are alive and they understand their individuality, you certainly will not use your hands to hit people. Hands that are human do not have the strength to hit people. Human hands have other uses – for touching, for art, for things that are cultured, good and refined. It would be different if you were a cow or a buffalo. If you had horns like a cow, of course you would use your head to ram with – or if you were an elephant. Or a tiger: a tiger’s claws are strong, so of course you would use your claws to maul and strike with.
That is why many people behave in ways that go against their true nature. For instance, a human being should not earn a living by hitting other people, as boxers do. God does not want people to beat other people up, to fight like animals. That is why, in old age, boxers end their lives in misery. A boxer’s body gets ruined because of their wrong actions.
Something similar happens to somebody who is obsessed with going to see things, with watching films or other attractions, and who never pays attention to the other parts of their body, which should be used just as much. That person keeps watching and watching and watching, until finally their eyes are damaged and they cannot see. The same goes for all the other parts of the body. That is how someone behaves when they do not understand what each part of their body needs or wants.
In reality, the latihan will bring to life every part of you, all of your senses, so that you will know how to live your life; and, one by one, each part of you will be freed and released from the oppression of the desires and the mind. And then, as Bapak has often told you, you will be able to unite your whole inner feeling so that every part of you connects with your soul, which runs your life. Thereafter you will know what each part of you is to be used for, both in this world and in the next world.

Such is the closeness of God’s will to human beings – there is nothing in between, between a person and God. That is what God’s power is like, in that God’s will has been placed within every creature He has created. That is why God is called All-powerful.
So the Almighty guides you in your life in a way that is truly empowering, so that you are not dependent on following some-thing because it is considered to be the right way. For example, if you follow a training according to somebody’s method you are under the power of that person; because, whether you like it or not, you have to be like they are. It means you do not have freedom within yourself. That is different from the latihan, where you are awakened in accordance with your own individuality. It does not alter who you are.

As Bapak has often told you, the Subud latihan is the will of God that enables human beings to realise, in the course of their everyday lives, that the power of God is within their being. In this way you will become acquainted with God and God’s power, starting in this world and then in the hereafter.
Truly that is God’s will, so that for you who have received the latihan, who have received the contact with God’s greatness, your understanding and awareness can penetrate your soul. Then when you die, and in your life after death, you will be able to remember your journey in this world and what it was like when you were still in this world. That is quite different from knowing God’s power just with your heart and your imagination, instead of with the whole of your feeling.
Furthermore, the awakening of your inner feeling that is expressed through your movements is actually bringing the whole of your inner feeling and every part of your body to life, so that you can become aware of what it is like to live in freedom, where you are not oppressed and controlled by your heart and thinking, by what you have learnt and studied. With all your senses alive you will not come to a dead end in making your life happy in this world. You will spontaneously become people who are valuable in the eyes of this world. Your value will not be surpassed by the material things you would like to have, such as diamonds and other things.
What is the reason for that, sisters? It is because God created human beings higher than other creatures. So, if you can reach the level of a human being – which is what you want and which is also God’s will for you – then in this world there will be nothing more valuable than you.

Therefore if you feel in a hurry and want to progress quickly it means that you do not have patience, and patience is very important. Do not imagine that the slowness and difficulties you encounter in your receiving are because God does not love you or because God discriminates between you and other people. No, you are all the same. You are just the same as the people who lived a long time ago and were able to receive God’s revelation. It is shown by the fact that they had a head and now we still have a head; they had two eyes and we have two eyes; they had two ears and we also have two ears. The way they grew is the same as the way we grow; there is no difference.
So, it depends on the person. That is why it is said that God’s revelation can be received only by someone who is really humane and has the qualities of budhi and dharma. That means someone who has full trust in God, like Prophet Abraham; who is submitted and accepts everything they receive from God, like Prophet Moses; who truly loves God more than they love their own life, like Christ; and who is closer to God, who not only loves God but obeys God and is totally surrendered, so that whatever they do is willed by God, as we see in the life of Prophet Muhammad.
That is it, brothers and sisters. So someone who is like that, whose character and behaviour are like that, is no different from those human beings in olden times. They have the same right to receive God’s revelation as those people did. Therefore Bapak hopes that all of you will do the latihan wholeheartedly, with a feeling of patience, acceptance and a willingness to let go. Apart from that, it is also important for you not to feel envy or hatred towards other members or people outside Subud. When you still feel hatred or envy in your heart and thinking it actually harms your own self, because it brings back into you what has already been painstakingly cleaned out by God’s power. It means in the first place that you do not appreciate the way God is looking after, repairing and purifying your being; and secondly, that you are sinning against your own soul, which wants to be free and to know the realm of the unseen, the spiritual realm, which is still concealed by your heart and thinking.
As Bapak said earlier, you will regret this and you will be disappointed once you have experienced the higher states, an experience of clarity where you can discover the truth about what you have done and what you are going to do. And it follows that if your soul cannot reach freedom and understanding about the whole of your life, when you eventually die the one who would continue your life will not know you, since you have not got to know each other before you died.
But if you have already experienced, if you have already obtained, what Bapak described – if your soul has become aware and been repaired and ennobled by God and gained an understanding of its life – then later, when you come to the end, it is your soul that will continue your life: your soul, which is you yourself but not your ordinary self. Your soul is you when you are no longer in this world, and will carry on your life journey without limits. As Jesus said, ‘Death is a continuation of life. There is no end.’

In this way God guides a human being in accordance with his or her own self, so that the one who is led and guided is free outwardly and inwardly. The outer freedom is something you can seek externally, as in the French Republic, which represents freedom; but inwardly too you are not commanded or bound by anything other than your own individuality.

If you have done latihan for a long time, but you cannot feel it, let alone receive what Bapak just described, he asks you to be patient and leave the matter to God. Because this problem, the problem Bapak just talked about, is one that God alone can deal with; it is God’s work. A human being can only pray for God to deal with it.
So do not worry about this to the point that you get fed up and feel like giving up. If you do, you will only make your situation worse. Don’t do that. Bapak urges those of you who have been in Subud for a long time but who have not yet received what Bapak has just described, to be patient and leave it to God. God knows about your weaknesses and God knows what is best for you. So you do not need to worry if you have not received what you asked for.
And when it comes to how to conduct yourself in your community, you should do what religion instructs. You should, for example, help anyone who needs help; care for others; never act in a way that goes against God’s will – meaning, never do anything to restrict another person’s freedom or happiness. As far as possible you should behave in the way the messengers of God behaved in the stories you have heard – you should love and help other people.
But when you do that, you should not disturb your own peace and well-being: you have to manage both aspects of your life in a balanced and orderly way. So do not help someone by giving them everything you have and end up with nothing. If you were to do that, you would become disappointed. And disappointment would have the opposite effect on you: instead of becoming someone of good character, who helps people, you will blame the person [you helped]; you will blame other people. Why is that? It is because, however you look at it, you are still human; you are still enveloped by the desires, and you still have needs – to look after your life, to provide for yourself and to provide for your family.

Prophet Abraham was called khalil All ah. The meaning of khalil is ‘a faithful servant of God’. Prophet Moses was called halam All ah, which means ‘one who perfectly transmits a path that is from God’. Later, Christ was called ruh All ah, which can mean ‘son’; that is, one who is willed by God to lead human beings. And then Prophet Muhammad was called rasul Allah: ‘God’s messenger for giving information to human beings’.
So it is clear that what exists in religions is truly the word of God, which needs to be disseminated and transmitted to the whole of humanity. What they say is, ‘It is enough, my children, to have faith in God with patience, and to act in a way that is truly humane, which does not reduce or obstruct the freedom and happiness of others. Disseminate nobility, happiness and comfort in the world; create justice, prosperity and harmony between human beings, between nations and religions. In this way the world will become truly peaceful, prosperous and secure, and there will be no problems Those are the words of God that were given to humanity, as told in the religions.
Brothers and sisters, now, with the coming of Susila Budhi Dharma and the latihan, we can truly feel that God always loves human beings. For at this time human beings have increasingly forgotten those [words], drifted away from them and neglected them, having more and more faith in their own individual hearts and thinking minds than in what God has conveyed or spoken through the messengers who lived in past ages.
God knows – and Bapak is also aware of this – that because the thinking and understanding of human beings keeps progressing and becoming broader, they increasingly drift away from the will of God that has been created within their being. Nowadays many people do not believe that God accompanies human beings. This is because the reality of God cannot be proved, and the human intellect and the human heart require evidence. Our eyes need the evidence of an object that we can see in front of us, and our ears need to hear the evidence of a sound that is around us. It is the same for our nose and our mouth – they all need evidence.

Bapak urges you all to distinguish between that and the work of God – meaning the latihan that we simply receive. All you have to do is to attend the latihan on the latihan days. You can also do it at home, but do not force yourself. So, you are performing the service of God; meaning that you do what God commands.
The other need is to work to be able to support and provide for your life in this world. In this way both your outer and your inner will become healthy and excellent, and will fit well with Susila Budhi Dharma.
As for the name Susila Budhi Dharma: susila means humane. As a human being you remain human outwardly and inwardly, knowing what is wrong and what is right; what is good and bad; and how one ought to live in the human community in a way that does not curtail the freedom and happiness of others but shares bliss, nobility and happiness with the whole of humankind. The second, budhi, means that within your being there is the will of God as an educator, a guide and One who shows the way. The third, dharma, means that we are empty, willing to let go and to accept.
You will be able to achieve all of these because all three fulfil the conditions for being human. And only through these can a human being receive God’s revelation, grace and generosity, so that he or she can return to the origin as a perfect human being, a complete human being. That is the very least, brothers and sisters. More than that depends on God’s will. Bapak will not prevent you from going beyond that, for God is the One with authority in all this and is the Creator.
In fact God never ceases to provide a way for human beings. The same goes for those who have received God’s grace. They have received God’s words for informing human beings in general about the ways God has given them that make it easier to have an attitude whereby they can worship God in a way that is real.

Such is the truth concerning the Subud latihan: that people have been able to receive stories and revelations about it. But it may be that God is still keeping it hidden, with the result that Subud cannot yet spread quickly. Perhaps that is God’s will – that it should grow slowly and not cause a disturbance among human beings. For with the birth of Subud all kinds of images, all kinds of stories that have not yet been unveiled or disclosed, will be unveiled and disclosed through the latihan, so that in the future people will no longer be superstitious, but will become human beings whose outlook is real, precise and based on reality.
Indeed, brothers and sisters, at the present time, during this century, human beings in general want freedom – freedom in their outer life and also in the spiritual realm. This is in fact God’s will: that [inwardly] people should not be dependent on other human beings but only on God; while in their outer life they should depend on the laws they themselves have made – laws made and obeyed by human beings. In this way the souls of human beings in general will be free, not dependent on anybody, and able to be in direct contact with God’s power. This is what God wants for everything God has created, for all that exists according to God’s will.
It is the same as with the things you make: when you make a car it cannot be disconnected from your will, because it exists as a result of your will. The same applies to human beings. Human beings exist because of God; therefore they are not disconnected from God’s will. That is why God does not want human beings to become dependent on anything else, because they can connect directly with God and become free, truly free – outwardly and inwardly.
But do not misunderstand and think that this freedom could be dangerous for our life. It is a freedom that comes from God and is willed by God, and God is the Most Holy. The nature of this freedom, when human beings find or obtain it, is that although you feel completely free and can do whatever you want, you will not go against God’s will; in other words you will be truly filled with, and have the character and the soul of, susila, budhi and dharma.
So it is very appropriate that we have chosen the name Susila Budhi Dharma. The meaning of susila is being humane. That means acting and behaving and having the character of a person with a human soul, who is truly aware that their existence in this world is thanks to Almighty God. It means behaving in a way that does not reduce the well-being and happiness of others, and living in harmony in this world. It will make the earth into a place for the worship of God; not a place for quarrelling, where there is no peace and where humankind always lives in a state of uncertainty and anxiety.

[Bapak responds to a question from the floor.] There is a proposal from one of the members that this rule should be put forward immediately; that is, to differentiate between those of you who will be official delegates and those who are not, so that when something is discussed it will not be as disorderly as it is now. That is what this person is proposing. That is right, but all of you are already here and, well … Bapak can also follow how all of you are feeling. He does not have the heart to discriminate between those of you who are official and those who are not. Therefore Bapak leaves it to you to decide in complete freedom whether you would prefer to distinguish between those who are official and those who are not, so that the congress can proceed smoothly, or whether to leave everything as it is and to change it in the future. Bapak leaves this to all of you.

As for the members who are Christians and wish to embrace the Islamic faith, or those who are Moslems and wish to embrace Christianity, Bapak neither forbids this nor does Bapak direct or order them to do this; because in Subud, as Bapak has explained above, you are able, through the Grace of Almighty God, to receive and follow the latihan kejiwaan, which is in reality guidance and direction from Almighty God, so that the understanding and faith you have obtained from studying and from habits you have practiced for years are as if wiped away from your inner-feeling.
It is impossible for us to understand the Will of Almighty God but from the existence of the evidence within us we understand that the nafsu of the heart and mind that make a person distinguish between this and that nationality, or consider himself greater and more powerful than others, feel more admirable than others, make light of others, want to control others instead of helping, want to take away' other people's freedom instead of letting them have their freedom, and rely on his own cleverness which he considers more than that of others, must all disappear from the inner-feeling every time we stand before Almighty God, the All-Knowing, and worship Him. For this reason, each time we receive and follow the latihan kejiwaan, we feel that the influence of the nafsu that causes us to have bad feelings, as Bapak has mentioned above, no longer exists in our inner-feeling.

Long ago, in the time of Adam, when the self of man was a vessel that was still broad and pure, and filled with life-forces in proper order, man's nature was "three-in-one", namely body, human jiwa and power. Power here means being filled with the Power of Almighty God which envelops the self outwardly and inwardly. But then human beings multiplied in succeeding generations and as time went on most of them had more regard for the power of the nafsu than they had for the worship of Almighty God. In other words, they wished to be superior to others, to be in the right, to have riches and power for themselves; so, from the ideal and high level, they sank lower and lower until they almost reached the level of the material life-force: Some even sank so low as to have a jiwa of the material level, or a material life-force. You yourselves can recognize the evidence: where is the man who feels disappointed when he defeats another, and where is the man who feels sad when he deprives another of his freedom? These are the reasons, brothers and sisters, why the self of man is no longer a wide vessel, but a narrow one filled with lower life-forces which use the nafsu of anger and greed as tools.
Fortunately for you, through the Grace of Almighty God and beyond your expectation, you have been able to receive the contact from His Power which envelops you outwardly and inwardly, so that to some extent you feel the awakening of your inner feeling to the ideal way, as it was in the beginning.
Actually this has been related in the holy scriptures, brothers and sisters. Moreover, many wise people say that the Power of Almighty God is close to the self of man, closer than his thinking or his feeling about anything. But even though this has been said, such sayings will remain only in the realm of stories if the person who reads and hears them does not try to find ways and means that enable him to receive their reality. So it is a blessing of unbounded greatness for you who have all received the Grace of Almighty God, based on the feeling of patience and surrender with trustful acceptance and sincere submission to His Will.
That is why it is really out of place if you blame Subud when you experience difficulties in life, since Subud is you yourselves and the difficulties you experience in life are caused by the fact that your inner content is not yet in order. Of course, if your inner content is not in order, this will make itself felt in your outer life, so that your way of living and your life circumstances will also be disorderly. For this reason, it is very necessary for you to have patience, based on surrender with trustful acceptance and sincere submission to the Will of Almighty God, because it is indeed only God Who can change the disorder of your inner content. Furthermore, although you have received contact with His Power, do not neglect your work or stop working. This is wrong because life means movement and work, and so of course you should work as long as you live, since God Himself works. For if God did not work, the wide universe and all it contains would not exist. So it is clear that you must work, and follow a good course.

True, brothers and sisters, man can indeed make anything, because his own life equipment, which can be used to create things, has been made by Almighty God; but because man in creating things does not do so through the guidance and direction of God, it comes about that the things he has created may even be a menace, something frightening, in his life. In short, the influence of the nafsu which causes people to act only in accordance with their own desires, clearly knows no limits, as when a man believes himself to be superior, more powerful, nobler, cleverer and better than other people. This is because he is under the influence of the nafsu, as also are the actions of the person who curtails the freedom of others, makes difficulties for them, does not give them a fair chance, and even oppresses them and obstructs what they do. It is also because he is under the influence of the nafsu that a man will behave dishonestly, make a habit of lying and spreading untrue stories; and there are still many other things to be said if it were necessary to talk about the way the influence of the nafsu, which form the contents of the heart and mind, works.

So although we also work with our minds, we have to surrender everything to God. We are thus based on the principle of man receiving from God and man working for God. That is the way.
If that way can be followed, then one may hope that it will spread from the councilors to the members, and that Subud will go well will really become a pioneer for the human race in the field of security, freedom, independence and peace.
If this is done, each country or people will of course automatically become prosperous and secure. That is Bapak's hope, but whether his hope will be fulfilled or not is another matter. Don't ask, 'Can we do it ?' The main thing is for us to get on with it. Whether we can do it or not will be seen later.
God wills that men should make efforts. In Islam this is called kodrat and irodat, trodrat, irodat - they are equally great. Both are a basis, a basis for the best kind of human life, lived in harmony. They are equally great.

So from the time you begin to work, in quest of food, clothing and other basic necessities, you should know and understand the way to do so.
Why don't you? Why do many of you get stranded, coming to a dead end in your lives, as though you acted in the dark? It is because you are not yet able to be aware of the grace of God, cannot yet receive it, and hence cannot understand your real self and your talents.
That is the great benefit of the latihan kejiwaan for you who have been able to receive. Your lives in the world are truly provided for, ensured. By whom? By you yourselves.
Take for instance your movements and actions. As the latihan kejiwaan manifests in your feet, hands and body, they begin to be moved for the first time. When the legs are moved through the latihan, the activity is called walking. If a hand is moved through the latihan, the action is waving, touching, writing or holding. Yes, and when other parts of the body are moved, be aware how they move, if you can feel it. If your heart has been trained in the latihan kejiwaan by now, you will be able to feel, to ponder, to reflect on the source of this training. It comes from the inner.
Such experiences eventually move up to the brain, whose activity and work is thinking. If the brain's activity is carried on by the jiwa, it is done by the Power of Almighty God, and you can think about matters that are ordinarily beyond your comprehension.
Up to now you have only reached the stage where movement and behavior are at the lower level of outward activity. It is necessary to discern and feel the source of your actions, and the difference between 'I am moved' and 'I move by my own will'.
Although its level may be said to be a low one, your receiving is nevertheless an extraordinary thing for you. Why? Because it happens in emptiness, in freedom - freedom from the influence of the nafsu.
. . . So you should not simply trust your own desire. Your wishes may be strong, but you do not understand your content, the jiwa that fills you. If your content is the material or satanic force and you follow your desire, you will then practice asceticism, for example, and the fruits of that practice are produced by that jiwa - a material or satanic jiwa.
Many people have practiced asceticism for years, living in remote, desolate places and curtailing all pleasures, but in the end they still treat their fellow men wrongly, using black magic and occult practices which diminish other people's freedom and happiness.
Thus God alone can change the jiwa from low to high, from bad to good. And what can we do? Just surrender to the One God with patience, trust and sincerity. That is the only way.

Ordinarily, for earthly life, man needs not only the material force but also the vegetable, because he lives by vegetable force. He also needs the animal force, because he lives by animal force. He also needs the human force, because he lives among human beings. These four forces are always around and within you.
If while your parents lived they only believed in, trusted, and were aware of the material life force, then that force will be dominant in you.
So everyone's content of life forces, of roh, of jiwa, is different. If in their lifetime your parents attached more importance to material things than to plant life and food, and if they considered animal life and the lives of their fellow men - especially the latter - of little importance, then you as their offspring will do the same.
This is why people are selfish and hate other people; why they dislike others and violate their well-being, their freedom, and their honor - why they degrade other people. This is such a temptation to them that only very little of the human life force remains in man's inner self.
This is what you recognize when you look at it from the kejiwaan.

Human beings are clearly not free from fault while on earth. Only God is faultless.
So don't be hasty in feeling that the inner self has become clean and pure, and then hope God will immediately give you some boon for your lives. Best put aside such feelings straightaway and keep on surrendering to the One God with patience, trust and sincerity.
After receiving purification you will be able to recognize the results in your improved conduct. If the purification has proceeded properly, and you have not hindered it under the influence of the nafsu by veering towards the worldly and materialistic, you will really be able to feel the evidence of its results in your daily behavior. For instance, if what you do curtails somebody else's freedom and peace, if you find fault with another person or still feel jealousy, these things do not arise from the purifying process carried out according to God's Will. They are due to your still being influenced by the nafsu that wants to be right. While still receiving purification you are under the sway of the nafsu that wants to be more proficient and purer than others.
So if you are not influenced by nafsu during the period of purification, you will subsequently act and behave harmoniously, feel compassion towards your fellow men, and place your worship of God before worldly influences - although the latter are necessary to ensure your livelihood, in order that you may enjoy a tranquil and happy life. But if you still have feelings of jealousy, of wanting to win, you will be unable to attain happiness and peace.

So the purpose of operating enterprises and a bank in Subud is for you to have training in the way to live, in the way to deal with material things, in how to go about meeting your needs in life. If you apply this in all you do, in your actions and behavior, you will not stray from God's guidance which encompasses you both inwardly and outwardly.
By acting in this way, you will always worship God - worship Him according to the rules of religion, and worship Him in all the work you do. This is certainly not strange to you. So, when later you make jokes, for instance, they will come not from the mind but from God's guidance. Indeed, the humor and jokes with which you entertain listeners will not merely give them enjoyment but may possibly cure them of an ailment, because your humor, your joking will not be of the ordinary sort but from the jiwa, as led and guided by the One God.
Thus God does not guide you only in so-called good behavior; no. You are guided by God even in making jokes, so that you will not hurt another person or diminish his happiness, well being or freedom. On the contrary, your humor can make a person feel calm and satisfied, and can even bring him good luck.

God has decreed that human beings should live in this world, and also that they should give attention to the manner of their life in this world, as has been the case ever since God sent Adam down into the world. And although it is the will of God that human beings should always give attention to their lives in this world and take care of themselves so as to live well and happily in this world, God also gives human beings something within their inner selves which is free from the influence of the nafsu that dwell in the human heart and mind. In this way, if human beings are truly patient, trusting and sincere towards the One Almighty God, then besides acting in such a way as to fulfill the needs of their lives in this world, they also receive something from God which manifests within their inner selves.
That is how it is, brothers and sisters, and it is this that by the grace of God, by the blessing of God, we have received with the advent of the latihan kejiwaan of Subud. That is why Bapak always says that the latihan kejiwaan of Subud is guidance and direction from the One Almighty God. It is not caused by human beings, not caused by this or by that, but on the contrary, the birth of the latihan kejiwaan of Subud, its emptiness and freedom from the power of the nafsu which work in the human heart and brain, is a grace which you receive from the One Almighty God. And this is its cause, it is not that Bapak is brave and daring, but it really is like that. Bapak is only going ahead, Bapak is only following the will of God which he always receives, which is that all of you in Subud shall, besides worshipping God, continue doing what is required for your lives in this world in a really perfect way. That means that you should fulfill the conditions for human life in this world, doing everything that is required of you in every field. In this way you will really be keeping the promise of mankind to the One Almighty God. So long as you live in this world, you will do everything as amal ( good works ), for your own selves and for the sake of the One Almighty God.

Brothers and sisters, I hope you will not think that Bapak is now concerned only with worldly matters - no. Of course he has been concerned with them, for otherwise it would be pointless for God to create mankind in this world. God did not create mankind in this world just for us to think about how to die quickly - no. If God had created mankind just for an early death, it would not have been necessary to create mankind in this world. Thus it was in order that he should live in this world that God created man; to live well in the world, to live in a really good way; to live well and nobly with his family; to live in freedom or in peace, and in the end to return safely to God, with nothing lacking; and to find the right way.

Well, brothers and sisters, in order that you may now be able to realize for yourselves, in order that you may be able to see what your own individuality is really like and what responses and indications are given by your own self, you have now to be able to respond from your own individuality.
( Testing )
On the whole, your individual characters really do relieve and lighten your feelings, and you really do feel that you are not bound by the nafsu. Your state is free; you are in a state of freedom. It is indeed made clear that when you have been freed from the nafsu your inner feeling appears and you can feel a kind of joy of living, as if you were living in a state of bliss, in need of nothing.
You can certainly feel this. Take Ramzi, for instance: could Ramzi feel his inner character? Yes. So too with the others. There is not time for Bapak to test you one by one, so he is doing it all together, to enable you to be aware of yourselves.
What this really shows, brothers and sisters, is that you are all doing the latihan, you all receive the latihan kejiwaan, and therefore in your daily actions and behavior there is a connection between your self and the power of God. As to whether you also need to worship according to the shariat, ( set rites of religion ) there is nothing against it; indeed it is very necessary. But, apart from that, you are already able to respond to your worship of God's power that takes the form of guidance and direction for both your body and your jiwa.

Thus, those of you who come from abroad, supposing you come here, for instance, you have to bow to the rules made by the people here. But it should not be considered that this is not the country for these people. Yes; it is also their country. You may acknowledge this as your country even though you may be English, you may be French, you may be of any nationality. You may do that, but if you do, then you must bow to the local regulations. And it is the same thing if you wish to go somewhere else again, even though this is also all God's world or God's country or God's earth.
A human feeling such as this gives rise to a feeling that can be called freedom. Thus you have a feeling of freedom, you can live anywhere, because it is all God's earth. But as Bapak has just said, you have to bow to the local regulations. Supposing you are English, you should not behave here like an English person, as if the English regulations also applied here. That you cannot do.
It is like the difference between chickens and goats, just to take an example. If a chicken wants to live in the goat pen, it has to bow to the arrangements of the goats there. If a goat is in a chicken run, it has to bow to the arrangements of the chickens who live there. If not, then it makes no sense and merely confuses its contents.
This is something you need to understand, all the more so you who have been able to receive the latihan kejiwaan. In fact, sisters, God makes no distinction between people, whether they are English, French, Dutch or anything else. They are all the same. That they can all receive the latihan kejiwaan proves it. This is something that really comes from God, so that it really is for all mankind and not for any one race of people. No.
That is why Subud, or this latihan kejiwaan of Subud is not like a religion. Although the already existing religions are in fact universal in character, all one whole, yet people are not like that, and these existing religions are taken to be characteristic of some particular group. Yes, although it is a mistaken idea, that is how it appears; as if Buddhism were just for India, while Islam appears to be just for Java or the Arab countries and Christianity appears to be just for Europe and America. It is not like that.

But what is your situation, brothers and sisters, and what is the situation of mankind when human beings with their nafsu make so many mistakes in their lives? Bapak has just said that God gives something to human beings so that with that something they can know how the nafsu must be made to work, and can also know how mankind can worship God without any hindrance.
This is the reason why in Subud Bapak proposes something to give your nafsu and your minds work to do which will not turn everything into imagination; that is, Subud enterprises. The enterprises which Bapak suggests in Subud are not suggested in order for you to pursue material possessions and riches. No. It is so that you can earn money and reap the rewards of this world so as to make your lives in this world peaceful and secure.
Although the way you seek material possessions and make provision for your lives is one which gives food to your nafsu, through the guidance of God and by the direction of God you will certainly make good use of what you possess and you will do it as well as you can. You will not restrict anyone's freedom or reduce the happiness and security of other people's lives. To expand on this, if you live in the world in this way, the people of this world will become harmonious and peaceful. They will not always be chasing after material possessions or striving for superiority over others, causing the world to become chaotic. That is not the way it should be; that is not the will of the One Almighty God, as is stated in all the religions.

Brothers and sisters, the heart, the mind or the nafsu which form a cover over our selves are really difficult to throw off. For they have a nice home for themselves, a cool place, the best place for you, and so it is not possible merely through the efforts of the heart and mind to break down the nafsu which prevent your jiwa from awakening. But Alhamdullilah, as is said in Islam, thanks be to God that you have received the blessing and have received grace or the qodar from the One Almighty God. And although the covering is tremendously strong and so closely knit, yet because of the strength of the Almighty, the jiwa can awaken and can break it down. In this way every obstacle, everything forming a hindrance, everything forming an obstruction on the path and making it impossible for you to be able to worship God sincerely, can all be broken down, thanks to the power of the One Almighty God, Who has bestowed His blessing upon you.
For example, suppose that someone usually follows his nafsu and likes to hit people, and likes quarrelling and doing things that harm other people, and also likes to boast and so on, then these habits of his are obstacles; they are like thorns, and they are also like dirt inside that person. Dirt such as this is not easy to separate from the self, and it is not easy for such a person to receive the awakening of the jiwa which can break down the obstacles, and strip away the dirt and the bad habits such as liking to hit people, liking to restrict other people's freedom, telling lies, quarrelling and, in short, doing things that are not of the best kind.
That is why older people, especially priests, always advise the young ones to act in an excellent way. They advise them to avoid actions that fall short of the best, because these unworthy actions are obstacles for their own selves. They are obstacles which prevent people from reaching the highest levels, when this is what they wish to do. So it is clear that to clean out the faults that are within the self so that this person may find an excellent way for his life, may find his way, so that he truly worships the One Almighty God, is something which cannot easily be achieved.
Brothers and sisters, you have been granted grace, you have been given the qodar, so that with the sincere surrender of your hearts and minds you have been able to receive an awakening of your jiwa from within. This process, which is so difficult and usually so hard to accomplish, has been easy for you to receive because you have obtained help from the power of God. Maybe you ask why is it just you who receive it, when there are many other people who persevere diligently in their worship of God, for instance in the places which are said to be holy places. They worship every day, and every day they diligently follow the instructions and advice of their guides and advisers. Although they have gone on doing this for years, they are still unable to receive the contact from the greatness of God which is able to awaken their jiwa and eventually break down the barriers of the nafsu which block their jiwa. Whereas you have all so easily been able to receive and to feel a contact from the greatness of God, so that your jiwa awakens and then eventually cleans out your faults and the wrong actions that you have unintentionally committed.

Brothers and sisters, it has been related by many people, particularly by those who are authorities, that the fast is a training, such that the one who fasts may increasingly get to know, increasingly understand and be able to feel how the nafsu works, which is within the wishing and the heart of man. But ilham, the understanding which is received from the qadar of God, also comes by way of man's understanding, heart and intelligence. That is, also by way of his brain and his inner heart. This is why man is required to fast and to feel how his inner feeling is each day that he fasts: it is as though he has no spirit, no ambition to pursue the nafsu, he has no will to work, he feels as if he were lazy. Does God then require man to become lazy? No, brothers and sisters. It is only during this time that man is required to be like that in order that he can realize, can feel, how the nafsu which is in his mind operates, the nafsu which makes it hard for man to receive and to feel and distinguish that which is from God and that which is from his nafsu.
This is what makes it difficult, brothers and sisters; and for this reason, as Bapak said earlier, the only way for man to comprehend the blessing of God is by surrendering with trust and submission, based on a freedom from nafsu, that is, an emptiness of the inner feeling. By doing the fast it becomes more convincing because the nafsu no longer really works, so that we can receive the gift of God which manifests in the brain and inner heart of man.

During the month of the fast, I have deliberately not given any explanations about enterprises, because of course this has not been the right time for it. But this is the last of these talks, and therefore Bapak is adding some explanations about enterprises. It is necessary in order that you will not forget that besides doing the Latihan Kejiwaan you must also run enterprises. For this is the way to build up both your economic and your personal position, which means improving your mental capacity, your habits, your activities in life. We have for a long time been cramped and restricted, so that we have not had the freedom and the scope to work, for we were, of course, in a subordinate position and ruled by those who governed us.
Now is the era of freedom, and you are already in a position of freedom. You are free, so that the energies of freedom are aroused. In this way you can build up not only your mental capacity but your whole situation, which also means building up your economy. So you will not lag behind your other friends and people of other races.

Brothers and sisters, Bapak is only a path finder; Bapak just arouses people, both in the Kejiwaan and in outer life. That is indeed what Bapak has received to do. God Almighty wills Bapak to give explanations and to show mankind the way, the way of life in which human beings worship God.
God also wills Bapak to explain and show how, besides worshipping God Almighty, human beings also have an absolute obligation to make the kind of efforts Bapak calls enterprises, to enable them to ensure their living. Doing so will enable you to live truly independent lives, with freedom in your worship of God Almighty, freedom in the way you make your lives secure and earn your living.
It is this, brothers and sisters, that Bapak received by the will of God, to be passed on to everyone who truly and sincerely wishes to follow in Bapak's footsteps on the spiritual path of Susila Budhi Dharma.

The existence of this latihan kejiwaan of Subud has given us proof that we can associate amongst ourselves with people of different races and different religions. For in the power of God, there is no different between this race and that, or between people of this religion or that. There are only human beings and God. Our only aim is towards God. God is one and the same for all that He has created. So clearly, brothers and sisters, Subud, or the latihan kejiwaan of Subud, is an association of people of various races and religions, who can be in harmony together and united with one another. And their aims are the same: to be able to live in freedom, to live eternally, to live lives that are truly lives of worship of God for ever.

Bapak now leaves the obligation upon the organizational committees to tell the members about what is necessary, so that they will run enterprises. An enterprise is an undertaking which, when it is carried through, can supply the needs of the spiritual brotherhood of Subud. For by running enterprises there will at least be an increase in the amount of money coming into the Subud funds, which, to judge from past experience, will not be possible if we only wait for contributions to come in from the members.
If we only wait for contributions from the members, we are unable to put our ideas into practice. We cannot fulfill our wish to be well-regarded by other groups, and by the nation, as an association of people who are truly interested in human life, and who, besides worshipping the One Almighty God, also give attention to the worldly requirements of that life; that is, to well being in this worldly life. In that way we, the spiritual brotherhood of Subud, really are a body working to bring peace to the world and freedom to every race, so that this world can achieve an atmosphere or condition that is peaceful and calm.

Thus besides being inhabited by the true human jiwa, the human self is inhabited by the jiwa of material life, the jiwa of vegetable life, of animal life and ordinary human life. Of course you would not imagine what happens when you look at something; indeed, you feel that it really is you who are looking, as if it were yourself looking. You really do feel, "It is I who am looking." But what is inside that "I"? You do not yet know; you do not know who and what is inside that "I." Why do human beings, to whom Bapak has just referred as being superior creatures, superior beings who know what is wrong and what is right, why do they find it in their hearts to kill people and to damage the lives of other human beings, to ruin and humiliate people; in short to take away other people's freedom and independence? And why do they do things that are not right, until they become like animals, for instance?
Bapak will give you an example. Yes, of course it is because of the value of material things that before you have any money, for instance, that when you are walking you walk like this ( Bapak makes movements and walks about ). You trip over a pebble, you slip and fall, because you have no strength. But when you have five million in your pocket, a check for five million, then you walk like this... If a friend passes you - "Oh, did you not see me? .... Oh, I don't know if I did." – You do not want to see your friends.
Again. Before you have a weapon, a knife or a shot-gun, a revolver, a pistol, a sten-gun or a bren-gun, then if you hear a sound as you walk alone - tik, kitik, kitik.., cok, kocok, kocok - you go towards it and "Oh dear, it's a frog"... But when you are carrying a pistol on you, let alone a sten-gun, you feel brave. This is just by way of a small example, brothers and sisters.

It is said that long ago, in the old days, human beings were in a hard and difficult situation, everywhere at the mercy of enemies. Enemies pursued them everywhere, and people killed human beings in the same way that they killed animals, or in the same way that animals kill other animals. That is how things used to be. Nowadays it is not like that; nowadays people have some protection. They are protected by law; by the laws made by human beings themselves. Obviously things are now better ordered than they used to be, but the way they go in this era still remains much the same as in the days of slavery. In the past what was called the slave trade was a trade in buying servants. It used to be like that in the past, but it is still going on even now. Where? People who work for others are slaves. People who work for others are like the people who were bought, because after they have worked for a certain number of years they are made to stop work, and then they are unable to make any money for themselves. They cannot do this and for what reason? It is because they have been used to receiving orders and instructions from an employer, a boss, and are used to doing a daily work that does not arise out of their own inner-selves. This is how it is.
At this present time, brothers and sisters, and with the birth of Subud, the birth of this latihan kejiwaan of Subud, God wills us and commands us to change, if that is possible, if we can do it. For it is left up to you as to whether you are strong enough to do it or not. God is now testing us testing us to see whether we can change the times or not, change the situation or not. Thus we who are here ought to be able to live by our own strength. But then we must not go on in the old ways and go on strike. No; the way to go by is the way of work, and this applies in every field.
Are the people who work in what Bapak calls enterprises, working as lawyers, as legal experts, are they working independently, on their own and with their own strength? No. They are employees. Whose employees? They are the employees of the people who pay them to fight an action so that they will win. Thus because they are these people's employees, they do everything possible to enable people who are in the wrong to win their actions.
Well, that is not honest. That is a dishonest thing to do. Something like that is not the will of God. According to the will of God we have to act in an honest way, even though we may be lawyers. What is wrong still remains wrong; what is right still remains right. This means that we have to do enterprises sincerely, and we need to do them together.
Thus if several lawyers work together, this contributes to the strength of Subud and helps to build Subud up. Twenty five per cent of their profits are for Subud. The rest is for yourselves, it will not run into trouble or loss. That is also an enterprise.
This also applies to building experts, teaching experts, all sorts of experts in whatever work human beings do in this world. This is where we change our natures. For the people who work are usually working because of the nafsu. We are not now doing that. If we can, we here, we now, are working because of God, so that eventually, rather than we making gods of material things, the material forces will treat human beings as gods. If and when this happens, then of course the world will become peaceful and good.
At present, things are not like that. Human life can be said to have no direction; there is no peace, there is no freedom - none. Yes; we lead dependant lives, we drift. Now it is like this, the day after tomorrow it is still again like this, and then after another year, yet again like this. It changes all the time. Indeed, the world is like that.

Brothers and sisters, plenty of stories already exist which constitute advice and also guidance. But many are misinterpreted by people in general, because it is really very difficult to be able to understand these stories clearly, or the truths in them. For instance, we Javanese are said as a rule to be like Arjuna. The name Arjuna signifies a man who had an excellent character. At the same time he was also capable of carrying out a task himself if necessary.
And on the other hand, there were also the denawa ( ogres ), which was what people were called, or which signified people, whose natures were all anger and greed, and who greatly enjoyed causing other people pain or robbing them of their freedom. That is an evil quality, which must be avoided, which you do not have to have.

The world today is ruled by the glory of the material forces. If you look at the world nowadays you cannot deny, you cannot but admit that what rules everywhere throughout the world today - the one that holds the rudder in the world - are the material forces. It is true that the material forces are always in contact with man's mind, and man's mind in the last years has made incredible progress to the extent that it has invented many, many tools of tremendous power, including instruments such as nuclear devices and so on. But because man is influenced, because man's mind which has created these things is under the influence or under the action of the material forces and accompanied by a nafsu which wants always to win and come out on top, so there is every sign that all man's inventions, all the greatest and most powerful of man's inventions, will be used to oppress others, to restrict the freedom of others, to reduce the degree and standing of others, as opposed to the group that happens to control these tools and these devices.
So from that we can conclude that if in the world today mankind will collapse or will be wiped out, then it will be thanks to the action of the material forces. It will be the material forces that will kill man in this world. But however that turns out, for us we have already received the power of God Almighty, we have received God's guidance which envelops us both inwardly and outwardly; and for us there will be a way in which, no matter what happens around us, we will be guided inwardly and outwardly. And this is the importance of the Latihan Kejiwaan for us, because it's as a result of the Latihan Kejiwaan that we learn how to be able to work in this world, how to use our heart and mind and not be influenced by the lower forces. This is why Bapak always encourages us to do enterprises, because an enterprise is for Subud members an arena for practicing how not to be influenced by the material forces. In other words, it's a test, it's a practice, that in everything we do, in our everyday work that we need to do in this world, we are always shadowed and guided and aware of the movement of the power of God which is within our being. So then the lower forces, the material forces, are not something that use us, that overpower our brain and our heart, but we are able to arrange them in the way that we need.

Bapak was told that one day Indonesia would become free, but before that there would be a number of wars - and the first war that was predicted was the war in Ethiopia, which happened in the 20's. Well, sure enough, Bapak waited for it and it really happened as it had been foretold. Then Bapak was told that after these wars and after Indonesia would be free, he would travel around the world. Bapak said to himself: 'How can I travel around the world, because to travel around the world you need money?' And Bapak was told then: 'Yes, you will not only have the chance to travel around the world, but everywhere around the world you will be invited by people of every race who will consider you their Father - so you will, in the end, be the Father of all mankind.' Many, many things like that were predicted. Up till now everything that was predicted at that time came true. The war, the World War, the freedom of Indonesia, Bapak's journeys around the world, meeting all of you here - all this was as predicted in the first book, and also as predicted in the second book.

People who are very clever say that religion is nonsense, for they are say that we cannot know God. Indeed that is so. But you, brothers and sisters, even though you may be clever, you have witnessed the existence of a life within your selves, so that you automatically believe in the existence of the One Almighty God. It is like this.
Thus the things that have been happening for a long time, the fact that people put themselves at a distance and separated themselves from the One Almighty God, are now being reversed and brought back to the way it was in the time of Adam. At that time human beings were close to the One Almighty God, so that whatever Adam did, whatever the prophets did in those old days, they did not forget their worship of the One Almighty God. This is the way that the world becomes peaceful. You have experienced proof of this for yourselves. So long as you do the Latihan Kejiwaan, or when you do the Latihan Kejiwaan, your feelings are different from what they were before you entered Subud and received the Latihan Kejiwaan. Now your feelings are calm; calm and clear, as if they are now satisfied.
Well, a feeling like that is a spiritual feeling. You must not employ feelings like that in your role as business people; that is in doing enterprises. How can you make progress in your role as business people in running enterprises if you are patient and calm and feel satisfied? That is a situation in which you need to use the nafsu.
Thus you are not now forbidden to use the nafsu, provided that you use them in the right places. The nafsu are will, desires. Thus it is all right provided that this will is used in the right places, so that it will really benefit your lives and does not take away from the freedom of other people.

It is the vegetable force that causes the arising of plant life, and it is through the vegetable forces within man that man is able to consume plant life in order to fill out his physical form; that is, his flesh and blood and bones, and so on. Again, no matter what man does, how man wants to separate himself from the influence of the lower forces, man cannot leave behind the vegetable forces, because no matter where man goes - if he becomes a hermit living in a distant place - he still has to eat. But man - and this has happened in the past - can force himself with a very strong will to refrain from every kind of food. True, with that kind of effort man can continue to live without his physical body, but instead of becoming free he becomes, on the contrary, a satanic being - he becomes a ghost. So it is clear that these lower forces are part of man's equipment for living in this world, equipment which he cannot possibly remove from his being, or from which he can free himself while he is living in this world.

In the latihan we experience a de-activation of our heart and mind, because the heart and mind are limited to this world and cannot go beyond it. As with Sang Hyang Sis, whom Bapak described to you - although he obtained what he wanted, and became something very tremendous, very powerful and very glorious, yet it was all within this material world. This is why those who follow Sang Hyang Sis, those who follow his footsteps and his method, they always require reincarnation. They require always to come back to this world. This is why, for example, in Tibet when they are looking for their new leader, a new king or a new high priest, or what is called the Dalai Lama, they always try to find a baby who was born exactly at the moment when the last Dalai Lama died, so that the fruit of the reincarnation of his spirit or his soul can be obtained. This is then the difference between what we have received.
It is the same, of course, in India. They maintain that they always advise that people should lead a very good life. They should practice asceticism and self-denial in this life, and do a lot of fasting and praying and staying awake at night, and all these things, so that they may become thereby a person who is truly 'Mika' - which means that when they die they can leave this world. But what that means for them is that they are then in a position that when they come back to this world, they can choose where they go. They have a freedom to choose. And then maybe next time they will choose a baby or an embryo or whatever who they can see will be destined to become very wealthy in this life, or very successful, or have a very high position, or become a king maybe. But, of course, there aren't many kings nowadays, so maybe they will become president, or something like that.
So - it always relies on reincarnation and coming back into this world. Whereas in Islam, for example, or Christianity, or in the other religions, it is completely different. There is no reincarnation. Islam means life. So religion as we know it, as Islam or Christianity, means life. That is, in theory. Even though religion is eternal life, it has still to be put into practice - and many people do not know how to put it into practice. They only stay with the theory, and that's why they still practice things in the ordinary way, as Bapak has just described.
